This huge, American-style complex was the first resort of its kind in the country. It has four golf courses, a reconstitution of the famous Medieval village of Altos de Chavon, thousands upon thousands of acres of land, a marina, a cinema... in fact it's a real town! Even its beach is very select, with its bar and stylish seafood restaurant - it's the perfect place to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets. Indeed, it is a place of great tranquillity, where, although it is easy to get lost in the maze-like complex, you will definitely find yourself enjoying the change of scene!

    Location 8.0 /10

The huge Casa de Campo resort is located on the Caribbean coast, in the south-eastern part of the Dominican Republic, near La Romana and 100 mi from the capital city of Santo Domingo. The airport of La Romana is about 6 mi away in the north-eastern part of the country: transfer time is around 10 minutes.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

The rooms of Casa de Campo are spacious and very well equipped. They are simple, yet stylish and are elegantly decorated with rare fabrics. The floors are tiled, the furniture is made of mahogany and every room has quiet individual air-conditioning and a ventilator, a satellite television (79 channels), a telephone, Wifi Internet access (12$ per day), a mini-bar fridge, and tea and coffee-making facilities. They also have a desk, a king-size bed, an armchair, a sofa, a small wooden table and a walk-in closet and an electronic safe (free of charge), an umbrella, an ironing-board with an iron, dressing-gowns and slippers. The terrace has two armchairs and a round wicker table, making it the ideal place to admire the superb view of the golf course and the sea. As for the bathrooms, they are clean, with tasteful interiors and flower decorations. They include a bathtub equipped with a flexible shower, non-separate toilets, a bidet, a magnifying mirror, a hair-dryer, handkerchiefs and elaborate hospitality products. The bathroom is divided into three zones: the walk-in closet with a dressing-gown and slippers, the shower and bathtub area with a balcony offering a view of the golf course, and the actual bathroom with its washbasin, mirror and hospitality products.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Built over 40 years ago, in a very American style, the Casa Campo is a huge resort and one of the most well-equipped in the Caribbean. It resembles an actual town with its supermarkets, cinema, launderette, 4 golf courses and reconstituted medieval village, Alto de Chavon. The complex itself houses 267 rooms spread over several buildings, as well as 150 luxury villas which stand in the heart of a large botanical garden (with numerous ponds and travellers palms). You can take a refreshing dip in one of the two swimming pools, open from 09:00am until 06:00pm. They are nearly 8ft deep so you can try out your best dives! The larger pool also offers an aquatic bar and an overhanging palmleaf-roofed snack bar. There is also a 2ft deep rectangular pool for children to play in. If you need to 'touch-up' your tan, there is a tanning area available with wrought iron deckchairs and mats. There is also the Cygalle Healing Spa, a New York brand, which is comprised of seven spacious and well-decorated double treatment rooms, located in front of a vast meditation garden. The spa also has a cold water pool, a warm water pool complete with bubbles and a waterfall, a sauna, a Turkish bath, an outside shower and large wooden deckchairs for two.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

The Casa de Campo complex has a vast choice of restaurants; most of which are situated in Alto de Chavon, the reconstitution of a Medieval Italian village. For breakfast, which is served from 07:00am till 11:00am, why not go to the Lago Grill to enjoy a varied buffet and delicious tropical fruit juices, as well as the view of the Caribbean sea. For lunch, try out the catch of the day at the Beach Club, the restaurant on La Minitas Beach. For dinner, the gourmet restaurant Casa del Rio, which overlooks the majestic rio Chavon, awaits your visit in the reconstituted Medieval village of Alto de Chavon. Otherwise, you should go to La Piazzetta, or the Café del Sol (where their delicious pizzas are baked in front of you in an old-fashioned brick oven), if your preference lies with Italian cuisine. Finally, Mexican cuisine lovers can savour the varied and authentic menu proposed by El Sombrero while enjoying the rhythm of the music played by a joyful trio of guitar players.

    Spa 8.2 /10

The Cygalle Healing Spa, a New York brand, is comprised of seven spacious and well-decorated double treatment rooms. All the rooms face a large meditation garden. The spa also has a cold water pool, a warm water pool complete with bubbles and a waterfall, a sauna, a Turkish bath, an outside shower and large wooden deckchairs for two. This is more than pleasant but the spa is a little disappointing when compared to the level of luxury offered by the entire resort.

    Beach 8.70 /10

La Minitas Beach is quite far away from the rooms and the hotel's main facilities, but therein lies its only flaw. It is a pretty beach with coarse sand. It is spacious and has all the facilities you might need, including white plastic deckchairs with mats on which you can relax in the shade of white parasols. A dyke protects it from the waves, making it a lagoon of crystal-clear, marvellously warm water, lined with coconut trees. At lunch time, you can treat yourself to the excellent sea food on offer at the Beach Club restaurant and enjoy a drink in a comfy armchair, protected by a white canvas tent. Couples can relax and lay back on double leather mattresses only feet away from the sea: it really is the perfect place to watch the sun set! As regards children, they can play in the playground or at the mini-club, whilst sports enthusiasts have the opportunity to try their skills at table-tennis, beach volleyball or beach football. The beach also has showers and a water sports centre.

    To know

The huge Casa de Campo complex, a member of the Cuban-American hotel group the The Fanjul Brothers, since 1984, boasts four golf courses designed by the celebrated architect Pete Dye. This is a definite record for a resort! The jet-set and billionaires come to mingle in this resort, which was built by a Cuban consortium based in Miami. One of the highlights of the site is that it is host to a famous attraction, a favourite excursion of all the region's hotels: Alto de Chavon, a stunning reconstitution of a Medieval Italian village set on the heights above rio Chavon. It provides a grandiose setting that was used to shoot some of the scenes in 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Rambo'. This cultural and artistic centre built almost entirely of stone in 1975 encloses, among others, an art school and a rich pre-Columbian archaeological museum that exhibits the artifacts of the Taïnos Indians. Next to the museum there is a reconstitution of the house and balcony described in Romeo and Juliet, the two famous lovers from Verona. Many painters, sculptors, woodworkers and weavers come to the village to create and sell their craft. The resort bustles with art galleries and workshops, as well as coffee shop terraces and blossoming courtyards. The small church in the village looks totally authentic! As for the village amphitheatre, which was inaugurated in 1982 with a concert given by Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santanait, it can seat up to 5,000 people and it still puts on music, dance and theatre shows all year round. In addition to this, Casa de Campo offers an equestrian centre and a shooting range with clay-pigeons, ball-traps and simulated hunts. However, unlike many other resorts in the Dominican Republic, Casa Campo does not propose an all-inclusive formula.
