The smart Yellow Lagos Meia Praia Hotel is a large brand new build located about an hour's drive west of Faro in Lagos just seconds away from the beautiful Meia Praia, which is a long stretch of flat golden sandy beach. The large contemporary five-star hotel is a quiet option away from the bustle of areas of the Algarve renowned for cheap all-inclusive resort hotels. Not really a place to bring the kids due to the tranquil atmosphere, but a pleasant base for unwinding and for exploring the region, even if the structure doesn't have any of that typical local charm you are more likely to find at more intimate establishments.

    Location 5.5 /10

About an hour's drive west on the N-125 from Faro airport, the hotel is located a 10-minute walk away from the main Lagos town centre, which is no bigger than a large harbour village. The marina isn't the prettiest you might have seen, but the town, with its small meandering streets, has retained some Portuguese charm. The hotel is located just across the road from Lagos' main beach, Meia Praia, and sits at the end of a line of small hotels - fear not though, the street looks more residential than something from Copacabana beach. In the immediate surroundings there isn't much to see or do, apart from a beach club which serves lunch in the day and converts into a nightclub at the weekends along the beach (just opposite the Vila Galé Lagos Hotel further up from the Yellow).

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 209 rooms divided between rooms with garden views and sea views, as well as four classic suites and seven premier suites. The open plan rooms are all comfortable and pleasantly decorated and have warm wooden floors, sliding doors leading out onto a balcony with either a side or full sea-view, thick tweed brown drapes to ensure a good night's sleep even at daybreak and crisp taught white cotton sheets. All rooms have bathrobes, flat screen televisions, mini-bars (filled at guests' request - extra charges apply) and slippers. The open plan bathrooms have a free-standing baths and a double vanity; they are stocked with own-brand 'Omnisens' toiletries.

The premier suites are all located on the top floor and each one has its own roof-top plunge pool with glass sides, adding that extra touch of luxury. The suites are all more spacious, with a separated bedroom and lounge area and televisions are inlaid in the mirrors in the bathrooms, but otherwise the amenities remain the same.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Upon arrival, Yellow's large white concrete buildings with floor-to-ceiling windows remind of an Apple store but the spacious high-ceilinged open plan hotel quickly grows on you as you find your way around the hotel. The glass façade lets in plenty of light as well as gorgeous views of the sparkling turquoise waters of Meia Praia just across the street.

The modular furniture of the hotel looks like it was shipped right over from Denmark, and the neutral tones of the upholstery means the views retain the focal point throughout most of the hotel's glass walls. The hotel is built on a slight hill overlooking the sea and over five floors organised in the shape of a horseshoe meaning that rooms either have a side or full sea view. The fourth floor of the hotel, which is at ground level, is where you will find the lobby, while the rooms are between ground and sea level.

The hotel has all the facilities you would expect of a five-star establishment, including a lobby bar, 'Sensorial', a pool bar, two restaurants, a small shop selling essentials, a large outdoor area with decking looking out onto the nearby beach, two outdoor pools (one in the main decking area and one on the same level as the beach), a TV lounge for lazy evenings curling up with a good book, and although the hotel isn't adapted to young children, there is a kids' pool and club to keep them entertained just in case guests come accompanied with little ones. The hotel also has a spa area with three treatment rooms, an indoor pool for colder days, a gym, steam room, Jacuzzi and sauna - the use of the spa facilities come at an extra charge.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The hotel's main restaurant is The Kitchen, which usually serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in buffet style. For something a little more intimate, The Brown's restaurant serves an à la carte selection. The Sensorial lobby lounge is open throughout the day and serves refreshments and snacks. The pool bar is also open for most of the day and guests usually settle here for a light lunch if they don't want to venture outside the hotel. We didn't get the chance to try the food here, but the restaurants look slick and peaceful in their décor, which follows through the entire hotel. Guests have the choice between all types of meal plans - from bed and breakfast, full-board, half-board and all-inclusive, although do check with the hotel when you book as these might vary according to the season. For guests not wanting to leave the comfort of their room, the hotel also offers room service although timings vary according to season, so do check this upon arrival.

    Spa 6.7 /10

The 'Wood' spa is a calm and serene area, despite the hard lines of the décor which follow throughout the hotel. With three treatment rooms, an indoor pool, a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and fully-equipped gym, guests will not be left with a want for more. However, use of all the facilities is not included in the room rate.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The beach is one of the most beautiful in the region if you like flat, wide stretches of golden sands. There are no other characteristics here like rocks or vegetation. The water is calm, transparent, and turquoise, but deceivingly cold! The sea here takes all summer to warm up, hence why you won't see many locals having a dip until September. The hotel has direct beach access from the main pool deck, so you don't need to go round via the entrance. Further up the beach, just opposite the Vila Galé Lagos, is a beach club that serves lunch by a small pool and becomes a nightclub at the weekends and every evening during peak season.

    To know

The Yellow Meia Praia is part of a small group of hotels, which includes a four-star hotel in Alvor and one in Monte Gordo.

For guests arriving by car or planning on renting a car, there is a private car-park at the hotel (exterior parking is free but a charge applies for using the underground car-park). There is also complimentary wireless internet access throughout the hotel.

The Tivoli Lagos, with its modern character, hides a typical attractive gem, a high quality Portuguese restaurant : the "Pateo Velho". The Tivoli Lagos is in the city and will suit visitors more interested in the cultural discovery of Algarve than seaside joys. It is well located near taverns, bars, and Lagos marina.

The Marina Rio, formerly the Albergia Marina Rio, is a dated hotel located just on the Lagos marina a short walk from the town centre. Although the hotel is comfortable, its clientele actually comprises mainly of a retired crowd, so if you are looking for a lively and contemporary place to stay, this isn't it. A well located, practical and calm place to stay, we wouldn't recommend the hotel for people with young children, or couples looking for a romantic escapade.

A small scale resort-like 'village' of several clusters of houses around the main hotel building, the Costa d'Oiro is a calm and practical base for exploring the rest of the region from. Located in an area just after Lagos in the Porto Mos area, there isn't much in the immediate surroundings, but it is close to the quaint surfing village of Sagres at the south-westernmost tip of Portugal - this makes it an idea place to come to for a real break. A more peaceful alternative to the large resorts found in busier spots in the Algarve. The hotel caters to a wide-ranging clientele, from couples, to small groups of friends and families. The clusters of tiled roofed houses give the hotel a local atmosphere, which is embellished by the well-planted garden. An overall calm and pretty but fuss-free local establishment set in the Porto Mos residential area.

The boutique Vila Valverde embodies everything one would want from a stay in the southern Portuguese countryside. A beautiful converted house sitting on a slight hill in the middle of well-planted gardens in the small village of Luz close to Lagos. A lovely contemporary house with some of its original 'quinta' (or farmouse) features give it plenty of charm while providing all the comfort one would find at a more upscale establishment. The house doesn't have a 24-hour reception, meaning that guests are left to their own devices, giving them all the freedom and intimacy they desire. A stay here is ideal for couples and groups of friends looking for a bit of peace and quiet in a sophisticated atmosphere a short walk from the nearest beach.

Open all year round, the Vila Galé Lagos is one of the newer and better hotels of the Vila Galé group. Located just a few steps away from the beautiful Meia Beach, and a short walk from the Lagos marina and original town centre, the hotel is perfect for guests wanting to spend time away from any sort of large urban metropolis. The large glass complex is loosely based on a fashion theme and has a very good range of facilities onsite. The service is excellent, the rooms spacious and comfortable, making the hotel a great choice for holidaymakers looking for a resort hotel. The aspect of the resort that impressed us the most is the passion the manager has for the project - a passion not just to boost profits, but also a genuine interest in providing the best he can for his guests and his staff, which is extremely rare and shines through in the service and the quality of the facilities throughout the hotel.

The Cascade Resort is a large scale resort or 'village', if you will; as well as hotel rooms, it also includes residential villas. During our visit the resort was still being finished and was in its soft opening period. The finishing touches were done to a high degree, unlike many resorts of this type and of this scale, so as far as large resorts go, Cascade is a fairly good choice if this is the type of hotel you are looking to stay at while holidaying in the region. With large gardens and endless space, the resort caters to a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families.

Without hesitation one of the worst hotels we have visited in the Algarve. Dingy, drag and absolutely garish, the Carvi Beach Hotel would only be good as a base for travellers on a small budget for a night or two. Another advantage is that it is close to a lovely beach, which is down the side of a steep cliff. Located in Lagos up on the cliff (almost) overlooking the sea, there isn't much else is the surroundings, which are for the most part residential. If you're looking for somewhere cheap to holiday, you're better off putting in that little extra for a hotel of better value as this one is just cheap and nasty.

Located a short walk from Porto Mos beach along a discreet narrow alleyway lined by residential houses, the Vivenda Miranda is typically what one would call a 'well-kept secret'. Sitting perched on top of a cliff, it is in prime location for stunning views of the sea. Teamed with the lovely well-planted gardens, a stay here is perfect for unwinding. Although children are welcome, the villa is best suited to adults. The hotel is part of German label, 'Romantik Hotels'.
