Amy Adejokun Section editor

Casa Por Qué No? is a charming little B&B located in the centre of the village of Las Galeras. Run by a very friendly and kind French Canadian couple, Pierre and Monique, the place is a great option for travellers looking for pleasant and clean good-value accommodation close to the beach. There are no other facilities to speak of at this guesthouse, apart from cosy-looking hammocks out in the garden. However, the B&B is a minute's walk from Las Galeras beach and is located in the centre of the village, where there are a number of restaurants, bars and a bank.

    Location 10.0 /10

Surroundings: Casa y Por Qué No? is located in Las Galeras, a small festive fishing village by the sea in the Samana Peninsula in the north east of the Dominican Republic. The village comprises two main streets lined with bed and breakfasts, shops and restaurants. The main road leads right to the main beach, Playa Las Galeras. The B&B is just door to Plaza Lusitania (see our review) and across the road from El Marinique (see our review) and La Isleta (see our review) hotels.

It is possible to reach Playa Rincon, a long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters, in 15minutes by boat and about 20 minutes by car. Playa Madama and Playa Fronton can be reached in about 20 and 30 minutes respectively by boat from Playa Las Galeras.

There is a domestic airport in the town of Samana, and the international airport, El Catey, is just at the entrance to the peninsula, which is about three hours away from Las Galeras. The easiest way to access Las Galeras is to arrive in Santo Domingo, the capital, as with the new highway it takes two and a half hours to reach the peninsula. There is an efficient bus service run by Bahia Tours that leaves from Samana town to the capital. Puerto Plata is about three to four hours away by car.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

With only two rooms here, there is no risk of being disturbed by other guests. Guests are essentially staying in Pierre and Monique's home - each room is on either side of the house with their own independent entrances. Both have a small terrace out front with a more private garden area.

Inside, the rooms are clean and pleasantly decorated in soft shades of green and cream. Each room has a collection of books in a variation of languages left by other travellers. There is a small bathroom with shower (sink and wc). There are no toiletries here, so make sure to bring your own. There is no air-conditioning but there is a ceiling fan. The rooms are comfortable and clean.

    Overview 5.70 /10

There isn't much to this little B&B. Pierre and Monique set up here "?back when las Galeras was practically all jungle", said Pierre. There was no electricity (which was put in less than two decades ago). Pierre first came to the area in 1978 and seized an opportunity that came up - he bought the house and his wife and him spend half the year here and half the year back in their native Canada.

The B&B is located just off the main road but as the house is set back from the street in a lovely garden, it is quiet. There are hammocks in the garden for guests to lounge in with a book in the early evenings. There is also Wi-Fi (complimentary).

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

As the guesthouse is a B&B, breakfast is the only meal served here - but it's rather a special breakfast. Pierre and Monique serve a range of pancakes, something that isn't very common in Las Galeras, where the food tends to be Dominican, including breakfast. Here they serve a range of seven different breakfasts. Dinner can be served upon request (with advance warning). Meals are taken on the house's front terrace looking out to the well kept garden.

    Beach 8.70 /10

The beach is just at the end of the road a minute's walk away. Las Galeras beach is the main one in the area, although there are a number of smaller and more private coves to explore. The beach here is beautiful - expect golden sand and bright turquoise waters. The beach is also often lined with wooden fishing boats customised by their charismatic owners, who you will find resting along the beach during the afternoon siesta.

La Playita is another fairly popular beach in Las Galeras and is about 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. It is located off the main road at the end of a dirt track. The beach is clean, with the iconic Caribbean fine golden sand and sparkling turquoise waters, however, for those looking for something more idyllic, we suggest heading a little further from the main hubbub of the scuba school, restaurant and parasols planted by sun-loungers that line the beach.

I'd never recommend this B&B.The french canadian couple that runs the B&B are ones of the most horrible persons we've ever met. They dislike if you stay part of the time in the room. They want you to eat their greasy thai food (they felt annoyed when we said to eat outside in a restaurant). The room wasn't clean-lots of hairs in the shower. There are other places in Las galeras much better. We experienced two bad days in Casa Porque no? and finally decided to go somewhere else to be treated properly

      • Advantages

the location is great for daily excursions

      • Disavantages

Disrespectful couple - bad hosts. Dirty place.

Often very busy and with all-day entertainment, this isn't the place to come for a quiet relaxing stay to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A good place to come for families looking for a place that offers lots of activities to keep the children busy or for holidaymakers on a budget.

Todo Blanco is a small hotel located right on the wonderful Las Galeras beach. When the sun is out, which let's face it, is practically every day in the Dominican Republic, the water (just seconds from your balcony) glows a bright turquoise that will keep you mesmerised for the best part of the day. For guests looking for the latest in state-of-the-art décor or facilities, Todo Blanco probably won't be your best bet. However, if all you're dreaming of is simple clean and bright accommodation right on one of the country's best beaches, then you've found it.

The Vista Mare hotel is located between Samana Town and Las Galeras on the main road but once you enter the gates, you enter a whole other world - one of exotic beaches and sweeping sea views. The apartment-only hotel sits atop a steep hill with the apartment blocks scattered on the site and the beach right at the bottom. A modern very basic construction, there is nothing truly Dominican here apart from the views, but Vista Mare is a practical place to stay for guests requiring a fair level of comfort.

Las Galeras is a small beachside fishing village with several restaurants and bars. The hotel itself really is just a base to explore the rest of the region from as apart from accommodation, there isn't much else on offer.

Run by an expatriate French Canadian lady, the hotel has several types of accommodations located in a lovely green garden that sits right on the edge of the beach. The restaurant, also in the garden, is also a good one to try in the day for its beach views. The accommodation needs a fresh lick of paint and a change of furniture in the villas. Otherwise a good base to explore the rest of the area from.

La Playita, like all the other hotels in Las Galeras, is a small hotel that is more of a base to explore the rest of the area from rather than a place to spend all your time. Close to the animated eponymous beach, the hotel is perfect for a wide-ranging clientele, from groups of friends to families and couples looking for a romantic getaway. As the hotel is on a small site however, guests should expect to have to mingle with other guests to a certain extent.

Perched up on a cliff, it looks out to a bay of the bluest of waters and it is possible to spend all day gazing at the wonderful vistas from the panoramic bar - especially good for sunset. There is nothing in the immediate surroundings but banana plantations so guests who come here must want to be surrounded by nature for a complete wind down.
