La Isleta is a small hotel located to the easternmost coast of the Samana Peninsula. Just a few meters from Las Galeras main beach, the hotel is very basic. Las Galeras is a small beachside fishing village with several restaurants and bars. The hotel itself really is just a base to explore the rest of the region from as apart from accommodation, there isn't much else on offer.

    Location 10.0 /10

Surroundings: La Isleta is located in Las Galeras, a small festive fishing village by the sea in the Samana Peninsula in the north east of the Dominican Republic. The village comprises two main streets lined with bed and breakfasts, shops and restaurants. The main road leads right to the main beach, Playa Las Galeras. The hotel is just door to El Marinique (see our review).

It is possible to reach Playa Rincon, a long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters, in 15minutes by boat and about 20 minutes by car. Playa Madama and Playa Fronton can be reached in about 20 and 30 minutes respectively by boat from Playa Las Galeras.

The nearest airport is El Portillo in Las Terrenas, however it runs very few international charters. There is a domestic airport in the town of Samana, and the international airport, El Catey, is just at the entrance to the peninsula, which is about four hours away from Las Galeras. The easiest way to access Las Galeras is to arrive in Santo Domingo, the capital, as with the new highway it takes two and a half hours to reach the peninsula. There is an efficient bus service run by Bahia Tours that leaves from Samana town to the capital. Puerto Plata is about three-four hours away by car.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

In total there are seven two-floor casitas (small houses in English), which are all very similar in terms of size and décor. Rustic but typical in the bright palette of colours used (bright blues, salmon pink, and green), the houses are comfortable and cool. On the whole, the houses are well maintained although could do with a bit of freshening up when it comes to the furniture and amenities. There is a sea view from the downstairs and upstairs terrace of each house.

Although there is a TV at reception, the houses don't have any. The houses have tiles throughout and bedrooms upstairs. Very basic, guests should expect the very simplest of things here against an outdated beach holiday scene painted on the walls in the rooms. Downstairs is the open plan kitchen and small living area.

    Overview 5.70 /10

This small hotel opened in the year 2000, by an expatriate Frenchman who has been established in the area for 13 years. Like all the hotels in Las Galeras, La Isleta is small and nothing fancy. The site the accommodation sits on is just a skip away from the beach. The garden is basic with a (semi-abandoned?) Jacuzzi. There are hammocks to maze about in and there is the possibility of having a BBQ in the garden. The reception area is located in a small wooden thatched roof hut at the entrance of the hotel. Because the hotel is located slightly off the main road, it tends to be fairly quiet and wild. Although there are no other facilities to speak of, the hotel can organise excursions or at least point you in the right direction. There are also a wealth of flyers of the different attractions and restaurants in the neighbourhood on the wall at reception, which should serve as a good starting point to explore Las Galeras and its surroundings. There is complimentary Wi-Fi internet throughout the hotel. There is however, no A/C here although there are ceiling fans.

    Food and drink

No food or drinks are sold here; however, each apartment is fully equipped for guests to prepare their own meals. There are also various restaurants and cafés to try in the surroundings. We recommend sampling fish caught that morning at the blue wooden contraption close to the beach. Absolutely delicious.

    Beach 8.45 /10

The beach is just at the end of the road a minute's walk away. Las Galeras beach is the main one in the area, although there are a number of smaller and more private coves to explore. The beach here is beautiful - expect golden sand and bright turquoise waters. The beach is also often lined with wooden fishing boats customised by this charismatic owners, who you will find resting along the beach during the afternoon siesta.

La Playita is another fairly popular beach in Las Galeras and is about 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. It is located off the main road at the end of a dirt track. The beach is clean, with the iconic Caribbean fine golden sand and sparkling turquoise waters, however, for those looking for something more idyllic, we suggest heading a little further from the main hubbub of the scuba school, restaurant and parasols planted by sun-loungers that line the beach.

Located just outside the small beachside village of Las Galeras on the Samana Peninsula, the all-inclusive Grand Paradise is a classic resort in its aspect and in the facilties on offer. Often very busy and with all-day entertainment, this isn't the place to come for a quiet relaxing stay to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A good place to come for families looking for a place that offers lots of activities to keep the children busy or for holidaymakers on a budget.

The accommodation comprises several thatched roof huts in the small beachside village of Las Galeras, (Samana Peninsula) in the north east of the country. The nearest beach, la Playita, is about five minutes' walk away.

Casa Por Qué No? is a charming little B&B located in the centre of the village of Las Galeras. Run by a very friendly and kind French Canadian couple, Pierre and Monique, the place is a great option for travellers looking for pleasant and clean good-value accommodation close to the beach. There are no other facilities to speak of at this guesthouse, apart from cosy-looking hammocks out in the garden. However, the B&B is a minute's walk from Las Galeras beach and is located in the centre of the village, where there are a number of restaurants, bars and a bank.

Todo Blanco is a small hotel located right on the wonderful Las Galeras beach. When the sun is out, which let's face it, is practically every day in the Dominican Republic, the water (just seconds from your balcony) glows a bright turquoise that will keep you mesmerised for the best part of the day. For guests looking for the latest in state-of-the-art décor or facilities, Todo Blanco probably won't be your best bet. However, if all you're dreaming of is simple clean and bright accommodation right on one of the country's best beaches, then you've found it.

The Vista Mare hotel is located between Samana Town and Las Galeras on the main road but once you enter the gates, you enter a whole other world - one of exotic beaches and sweeping sea views. The apartment-only hotel sits atop a steep hill with the apartment blocks scattered on the site and the beach right at the bottom. A modern very basic construction, there is nothing truly Dominican here apart from the views, but Vista Mare is a practical place to stay for guests requiring a fair level of comfort.

Just off the main road of the beachside village of Las Galeras, the small hotel, El Marinique, is very simple but has one of the best sea views you'll get in the area. Run by an expatriate French Canadian lady, the hotel has several types of accommodations located in a lovely green garden that sits right on the edge of the beach. The restaurant, also in the garden, is also a good one to try in the day for its beach views. The accommodation needs a fresh lick of paint and a change of furniture in the villas. Otherwise a good base to explore the rest of the area from.

La Playita, like all the other hotels in Las Galeras, is a small hotel that is more of a base to explore the rest of the area from rather than a place to spend all your time. Close to the animated eponymous beach, the hotel is perfect for a wide-ranging clientele, from groups of friends to families and couples looking for a romantic getaway. As the hotel is on a small site however, guests should expect to have to mingle with other guests to a certain extent.

Perched up on a cliff, it looks out to a bay of the bluest of waters and it is possible to spend all day gazing at the wonderful vistas from the panoramic bar - especially good for sunset. There is nothing in the immediate surroundings but banana plantations so guests who come here must want to be surrounded by nature for a complete wind down.
