    Location 7.0 /10

The Villa Serena is located near the village of Las Galeras, 30 minutes from Samana, at the east end of the peninsula. For the transfer from the new airport of Samana, plan at least an hour and a half.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

Each element of the decor in all 21 rooms provides a touch of refinement to the whole setting, and no two rooms are identical ! The materials are noble and pure : wood, bamboo, fabrics and carefully selected colours demonstrate a certain taste on the part of the designers. The Croatian owner conceived and designed everything, down to the smallest detail, by himself, with custom built furniture. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, all equipped with a fan or air conditioning (except for two rooms), a safe and a canopy bed. They each have a large private terrace or a balcony that offers a magnificent view of the Bay of Rincon. The well-appointed bathroom has a bathtub with a shower, hidden behind a cotton curtain, personal skin care products, a hair dryer, toilet tissue and the toilets are not separate. However, do not look for a television or telephone: the feeling of peace and serenity is greatly valued. There is no fridge but a bottle of water is provided at no cost.

    Overview 7.95 /10

The Villa Serena is certainly one of the most romantic hotels, the most charming on the entire peninsula, even the whole island ! The entrance is a treat in itself : it opens onto the sea and the bay of Rincon giving a magnificent view. There is no doubt that the place is tailor-made for newlyweds who come here for their honeymoon. The place exudes serenity and peace. Eleven of the rooms were built in 1993 and another ten rooms were added in 2000. In the surroundings of the hotel's two white, Colonial style, green-roofed buildings, there is a restaurant and a swimming pool and a beautiful tropical garden. The swimming pool has a sun lounge with deck chairs and a shower.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The hotel's restaurant faces the sea. The very good cuisine is a mixture of French and Dominican recipes. It is open in the morning for breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and in the evening from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Note: only breakfast is included in the price. The restaurant offers a la carte menus. Worth noting is a very good wine cellar stocked with French, Chilean and Argentinian brands.

    Beach 7.45 /10

There is no real beach in front of the hotel. The only decent beach nearby is that of Las Galeras, a three minute walk away. But the walk is worthwhile because the beach is very pleasant : large, composed of fine sand and bordered by coconut trees, you may never get tired of swimming in the bay.

    To know

Don't come to the Villa Serena just because of its army of animators who will take you by the hand and entertain you. Here, there is no television and no telephone in the rooms ! You will know the happiness of being completely isolated from the rest of the world ! The region has been well-protected from the invasion of promoters and the drawbacks of mass tourism. Las Galeras, the neighbouring village, was able to open up to tourism without losing its authenticity. This is an absolutely perfect place from which to admire communities of whales that come here to enjoy the warm waters of the bay and give birth to their calves, between January and April.

    A lodging tip :

The rooms on the ground floor are more spacious than those located on the other floors, and so are best suited for elderly or disabled guests. The terrace is larger and has a hammock. Those who can not withstand the heat should avoid the two rooms that have no air conditioning, located upstairs in the main building. For lovers (honeymooners or otherwise), we recommend Room No. 7, located on the first floor in the main building : this is the only room to enjoy a panoramic view of the sea directly from the bed. Another plus, room 2 will delight customers in search of intimacy : you will see only greenery and the sea, but no other buildings. Besides, it adjoins with room 14, so it is ideal for couples with children. On the ground floor, room 16 is also perfectly suited for families with children.

Located just outside the small beachside village of Las Galeras on the Samana Peninsula, the all-inclusive Grand Paradise is a classic resort in its aspect and in the facilties on offer. Often very busy and with all-day entertainment, this isn't the place to come for a quiet relaxing stay to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A good place to come for families looking for a place that offers lots of activities to keep the children busy or for holidaymakers on a budget.

A small family-run guesthouse, the Italian couple that owns it is extremely upbeat and welcoming. The accommodation comprises several thatched roof huts in the small beachside village of Las Galeras, (Samana Peninsula) in the north east of the country. The nearest beach, la Playita, is about five minutes' walk away.

Casa Por Qué No? is a charming little B&B located in the centre of the village of Las Galeras. Run by a very friendly and kind French Canadian couple, Pierre and Monique, the place is a great option for travellers looking for pleasant and clean good-value accommodation close to the beach. There are no other facilities to speak of at this guesthouse, apart from cosy-looking hammocks out in the garden. However, the B&B is a minute's walk from Las Galeras beach and is located in the centre of the village, where there are a number of restaurants, bars and a bank.

Todo Blanco is a small hotel located right on the wonderful Las Galeras beach. When the sun is out, which let's face it, is practically every day in the Dominican Republic, the water (just seconds from your balcony) glows a bright turquoise that will keep you mesmerised for the best part of the day. For guests looking for the latest in state-of-the-art décor or facilities, Todo Blanco probably won't be your best bet. However, if all you're dreaming of is simple clean and bright accommodation right on one of the country's best beaches, then you've found it.

The Vista Mare hotel is located between Samana Town and Las Galeras on the main road but once you enter the gates, you enter a whole other world - one of exotic beaches and sweeping sea views. The apartment-only hotel sits atop a steep hill with the apartment blocks scattered on the site and the beach right at the bottom. A modern very basic construction, there is nothing truly Dominican here apart from the views, but Vista Mare is a practical place to stay for guests requiring a fair level of comfort.

El Cabito's main draw is its spectacular location. Perched up on a cliff, it looks out to a bay of the bluest of waters and it is possible to spend all day gazing at the wonderful vistas from the panoramic bar - especially good for sunset. There is nothing in the immediate surroundings but banana plantations so guests who come here must want to be surrounded by nature for a complete wind down.
