The Vista Mare hotel is located between Samana Town and Las Galeras on the main road but once you enter the gates, you enter a whole other world - one of exotic beaches and sweeping sea views. The apartment-only hotel sits atop a steep hill with the apartment blocks scattered on the site and the beach right at the bottom. A modern very basic construction, there is nothing truly Dominican here apart from the views, but Vista Mare is a practical place to stay for guests requiring a fair level of comfort.

    Location 3.0 /10

Vista Mare is located on the main road between Samana Town and Las Galeras. There is nothing much in the immediate surroundings, however, once in Samana town (about 20 minutes' drive away) there are a number of excursions to do. See our guide to Samana Town and its excursions.

Samana Town is about two and half hours' drive away from Santo Domingo, the capital via the main highway, meaning that the nearest airport is actually in the capital as opposed to El Catey at the entrance of the peninsula about three hours away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel has 17 accommodation blocks with a total of 87 apartments, ranging from one to four bedrooms. They are run like serviced apartments and so are cleaned daily. The apartments are modern and without any particular charm, but they are spacious, well appointed and equipped - they are especially practical for families with children. All the flats have large balconies with spectacular views of the ocean.

Each flat has its own open plan kitchen and living area lined by a large balcony. Kitchens are full-equipped, including a mini-bar, oven, washing machine, an enormous refrigerator and even a blender, as well as a large range of kitchen utensils. The living room is equipped with a hi-fi and television. The rooms also have a TV, and are generally comfortable and come with either a double or twin beds. Every bedroom has its own bathroom stocked with Judith Jackson toiletries, which is a fair spa brand.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The reception is located to the right of the main entrance. In total there are 17 two-storey accommodating buildings, each with their own dedicated parking area. The apartment blocks stand at the top of the hill and the rest are down below. All have sea views and lovely long terraces. The bulk of the facilities are located in the main building at the top of the hill. Here you will find two pools, an upper and lower deck, a spa area, gym and the restaurant just above looking out to the ocean. The views here are the real draw to the hotel, hence its name, 'Vista Mare' ('ocean view'). The hotel has a small kids' club at the entrance of the spa area. There are also a couple of games tables (pool and ping-pong), a television and a mini-market for stocking up on any essentials. Wi-Fi is included in the apartment rate.

The highlight of staying here are the two beautiful private tropical beaches (see beach section below).

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

There is a main restaurant upstairs close to the upper pool with a view to die for. A mix of international food is served here. The menu is à la carte - there are no buffets unless requested especially. Most guests tend to be completely independent of the restaurant as the apartments kitchens are all fully-equipped for preparing meals. There is a 24-hour room service.

    Spa 6.7 /10

The hotel has a small spa area on the first pool deck. Nothing too fancy, the Xaixy spa ('islet'), has three treatment rooms. There is also a gym, which is located just across the pool area. Use of the gym is included in the room rate. Both the spa and gym have a beautiful view of the ocean through glass walls.

    Beach 8.70 /10

Needless to say that beaches in the Dominican Republic are beautiful and you would be right to expect something like in the magazines. What's even better though, is when you manage to find a small idyllic spot to yourself - and here at Vista Mare, guests are lucky enough to have two small beaches, east and west, hidden in a rocky alcove. Once you see the look of these natural beaches with their tropical green waters and verdant surrounds, the steep climb back up the hill will soon be forgotten!

Located just outside the small beachside village of Las Galeras on the Samana Peninsula, the all-inclusive Grand Paradise is a classic resort in its aspect and in the facilties on offer. Often very busy and with all-day entertainment, this isn't the place to come for a quiet relaxing stay to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A good place to come for families looking for a place that offers lots of activities to keep the children busy or for holidaymakers on a budget.

Casa Por Qué No? is a charming little B&B located in the centre of the village of Las Galeras. Run by a very friendly and kind French Canadian couple, Pierre and Monique, the place is a great option for travellers looking for pleasant and clean good-value accommodation close to the beach. There are no other facilities to speak of at this guesthouse, apart from cosy-looking hammocks out in the garden. However, the B&B is a minute's walk from Las Galeras beach and is located in the centre of the village, where there are a number of restaurants, bars and a bank.

Todo Blanco is a small hotel located right on the wonderful Las Galeras beach. When the sun is out, which let's face it, is practically every day in the Dominican Republic, the water (just seconds from your balcony) glows a bright turquoise that will keep you mesmerised for the best part of the day. For guests looking for the latest in state-of-the-art décor or facilities, Todo Blanco probably won't be your best bet. However, if all you're dreaming of is simple clean and bright accommodation right on one of the country's best beaches, then you've found it.

Just off the main road of the beachside village of Las Galeras, the small hotel, El Marinique, is very simple but has one of the best sea views you'll get in the area. Run by an expatriate French Canadian lady, the hotel has several types of accommodations located in a lovely green garden that sits right on the edge of the beach. The restaurant, also in the garden, is also a good one to try in the day for its beach views. The accommodation needs a fresh lick of paint and a change of furniture in the villas. Otherwise a good base to explore the rest of the area from.
