    Location 9.97 /10

    The Aligio Beach is located near downtown Las Terrenas, north-west of the peninsula of Samana. A taxi will take about 50 minutes to get to the airport in Samana, and a bus comes once every 2 hours as it must make a round trip because the road is too narrow for a returning lane.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

    The rooms are equipped with two queen size beds, a small satellite television broadcasting 40 channels (note, the reception is good, unlike other hotels in the corner), a safe ( 75 pesos per day, about £1.50), individually controlled air-conditioning (with remote) with a ceiling fan, and telephone. There is no fridge but everyone gets a thermos filled with fresh water. Those who like to read a good book in bed at night will not be pleased with the lighting; it isn't very bright. Standard rooms do not have insulated windows - only blinds with nets that provide welcome coolness, but let in the noise of the activities and sunlight in the morning. The superior rooms have either a large balcony or a terrace garden. None of the rooms overlook the sea. The small bathroom has a shower with a flexible handle, a bidet, non-separate toilet, personal skin care products, and window shutters with anti-mosquito net. Please, note that the water is very hot and has good pressure, which is not the case in most hotels in the region.

    Overview 7.70 /10

    Built in 1994, the Aligio Beach Resort underwent complete renovation in 2004 which repaired the damage caused by a hurricane. From the road, you cross a lovely little garden to reach the equally well-decorated lobby, with flowers in the middle. It houses a place to use the Internet and a small library cabinet. All 80 rooms are set in 10 one-storey buildings with 8 rooms on each floor, in a large tropical garden maintained with care and passion by three gardeners and a palm specialist who prunes the coconut trees. Some hens and roosters roam in the garden. The main swimming pool lies between the buffet restaurant and the bar (serving from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.), just outside the lobby. It is equipped with a volleyball net, deck chairs and a shower. Towels are available at the reception in exchange for a card. At the bottom of the garden you can enjoy a quieter, second pool with a small hot tub. Just beside it, there is a theatre where a cabaret show takes place every night at 9:45 p.m. Every Friday, a performance of Dominican folklore with dances, costumes and traditional music is presented. A bar serves many cocktails during the show, until midnight. The theatre also houses a ping-pong table and there are Spanish lessons in front of a school desk (the chalk will recall memories of your primary school days!). A little further on, there is a sports corner that has facilities for beach soccer, beach volleyball and archery.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

    The Aligio Beach Resort has only one restaurant, "Los Uveros" pleasantly furnished and decorated by local naive paintings, which offers an international buffet, organised around a Dominican theme every Friday. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., lunch from 12:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Everything is self-service, including beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Breakfast is delicious : you can taste the best pancakes in the region and the chocolate sauces and toast are homemade. Lovers of gourmet cuisine may wish to reserve one day for a freshly-caught crawfish dinner for a fee of 750 pesos (about £15) for half a kilogram of fish. Extra payment is also required for wines.

    Beach 7.70 /10

    You can access the Las Terrenas public beach along the main road through the village that is located along the sea. The beach has plastic deck chairs with mattresses for the hotel's guests. However, there are no umbrellas or showers. One or two members of the staff keep watch over the clients. The activities and events are sometimes too noisy. From March to October, the sea is calmer and the beach is larger. However, it gets rougher from November to February, and the beach is smaller because of the tide.

    To know

    A member of the Spanish hotel chain Azhoteles, the Aligio Beach Resort is managed by an Italian couple who are very charming and very friendly. This hotel is not really recommended for families, because the facilities are not adequate for children (no kid's club or children's swimming pool), and the organised activities are sometimes noisy late at night. The hotel is quite peaceful during the day, customers leave for downtown, or take a trip to the beach. On the other hand, evenings become are filled with activities worthy of a theatre stage;

    A lodging tip :

    If you peace and quiet, avoid rooms located near the theatre because the action is quite loud in the evening.

      Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.

      The Villas Mariposas is located across the street from the beach in Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula. A small resort hotel of very basic bungalow accommodation in a leafy garden with a main pool and bar, the hotel is the ideal option for groups of friends or families on a small budget. Villas Mariposas is more of a base to explore the region from rather than somewhere you would spend entire days.

      The small exclusive La Tortuga is simple but extremely peaceful and relaxing. With 10 thatched-roof bungalows located in a beautiful sheltered exotic garden around the pool, there isn't much else to this establishment. However, the rooms are very comfortable, clean and while quite basic, they are colourful and very clean. This is an ideal place to stay for couples and families (there are two-storey bungalows) on a budget and looking for a quiet base to explore the rest of the area from. La Tortuga is just across the road from the main beach in Las Terrenas.

      Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

      Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

      The charming boutique Hotel Atlantis, is located a short walk from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula and it is right on the beach - and what a wonderful beach it is! One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.
