At the heart of the village of Las Terrenas and opposite a superb beach, the Alisei is a hotel of high standards, with a spa, a wide pool and spacious, comfortable guestrooms equipped with a kitchen and a terrace. This is, however, not a resort - no all-inclusive option, activities or kids' club are provided by the hotel. It is a peaceful hotel ideal for couples.

    Location 8.18 /10

The Alisei stands across the road from the beach of Las Terrenas, in the heart of the village, in the north-western part of the Samana peninsula and on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. A taxi will take you to Samana airport in about 50 minutes, buses however take 2 hours because they have to take a detour to avoid the narrow road.

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

The rooms are spacious (between 45 and 70m²), nicely decorated (tropical flowers, three brightly coloured and beautiful paintings), air-conditioned (combined with a ceiling fan) and functionally equipped. They are fitted with pale tile flooring and a kitchen area (including utensils, cutlery, crockery, an oven, two sinks, a stove with four electric rings, a toaster, tea and coffee-making facilities and a fridge-freezer), to sum up, everything you need to make a meal as good as the ones you make at home! Room service is available from 8:00am to 11:00pm. Another great advantage is the large terrace furnished with wooden furniture, namely a round table and two chairs, as 80% of the rooms have a magnificent view of the sea. There is enough space in the rooms to have a dining area, which consists of a large wooden square table and four chairs, as well as a lounge with a sofa-bed. Amenities include two satellite televisions, one in the lounge and one in the bedroom. They broadcast a total of 60 channels. The bedroom is furnished with a king-size bed, a luggage rack, a full-length mirror, a pretty painting above the bed, some storage space and a free digi-code safe (large enough to fit a laptop). Wireless internet access is available free of charge. The French window to the balcony is fitted with a mosquito net. The bathroom has a big, flexible shower, a toilet, a bidet, a hair-dryer and hospitality products. The penthouse duplexes have their bedroom upstairs and feature a water fountain.

    Overview 8.20 /10

Built in 1997, the Alisei (named in reference to trade winds: alisios in Spanish) is a reasonably-sized hotel with 54 guestrooms spread out over six two-storey buildings without lifts set all around a rather long pool, in the midst of a garden made up of lawns, flowers and coconut trees. The pool area is also home to an aquabar (open only on Sundays) and a kid's pool with water jets. The solarium is equipped with wooden deckchairs, white canvas parasols, showers and even a hammock. The place is quiet. The towels are complementary of the hotel, available from the reception desk.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

The Alisei has an a la carte restaurant where international cuisine is served with a hint of Italian influence. Breakfast is served from 8:00am to 10:30am and then meals are served throughout the day. The setting is lovely and original: a circular room facing the sea, also giving guests the option of sitting on the other side of the road, directly on the beach. What a shame the road weren't a little less busy, especially with the amount of quads that go past. The restaurant also acts as a bar from 8:00am to 11:00pm with its large flat screen on the wall. It has a capacity of 60 guests or 100 counting the terrace on the beach side.

    Beach 7.95 /10

You will need to walk across the road to get to the beach of Las Terrenas. It is indeed less beautiful and natural than Playa Bonita but it is equipped with deckchairs, a beach volley court and a restaurant-bar beach service ensured by the hotel. Guests can have their lunch sitting at wooden tables and chairs, in the shade of green canvas parasols, to the gentle sound of the waves. To the left, you can see three islets in the shape of baby whales called Ballenas. It is a beautiful beach of golden sand (the colour of cane sugar), soft and fine, lined with palm and coconut trees, and the water is crystal-clear, protected by the coral reef. The beach is kept clean in front of the hotel, but is not so clean the further away you get...

    To know

In the close vicinity, activities a such as trampoline, beach table tennis, beach volley and horse-riding are all available. A computer is at the guests' disposal for free internet access and wireless internet access is available for free at the reception and in the rooms. There are no rooms that have been adapted to cater for disabled guests. The spa facilities consist of two massage rooms, a whirlpool bath, a sauna, a hammam and a cold water pool embellished with a statue of Buddha. All of these activities come at an extra charge. From the moment you walk in, you will see a charming waterlily pond. The result is a relaxing atmosphere with soft music and the soothing sound of trickling water.

The small exclusive La Tortuga is simple but extremely peaceful and relaxing. With 10 thatched-roof bungalows located in a beautiful sheltered exotic garden around the pool, there isn't much else to this establishment. However, the rooms are very comfortable, clean and while quite basic, they are colourful and very clean. This is an ideal place to stay for couples and families (there are two-storey bungalows) on a budget and looking for a quiet base to explore the rest of the area from. La Tortuga is just across the road from the main beach in Las Terrenas.

The Villas Mariposas is located across the street from the beach in Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula. A small resort hotel of very basic bungalow accommodation in a leafy garden with a main pool and bar, the hotel is the ideal option for groups of friends or families on a small budget. Villas Mariposas is more of a base to explore the region from rather than somewhere you would spend entire days.

Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.

Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

The charming boutique Hotel Atlantis, is located a short walk from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula and it is right on the beach - and what a wonderful beach it is! One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.

Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.
