The charming boutique Hotel Atlantis, is located a short walk from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula and it is right on the beach - and what a wonderful beach it is! One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.

    Location 7.59 /10

A five-minute drive from the centre of Las Terrenas, the Atlantis is located just outside the main town without much else in its immediate surroundings. There are a couple of other hotels in the neighbourhood, but not much else. The capital, Santo Domingo, is about two-three hours' drive away.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

The hotel's 18 rooms are dotted throughout the garden inside the smooth curved white buildings that remind our host Martina, of a Smurf village - not far off indeed. No two rooms are alike; all have different furniture, different shapes and sizes. Although frill-free, the rooms are extremely pleasant, comfortable with touches that recall the Dominican Republic. Bright and airy, we loved the rooms, despite some not having air-conditioning yet.

The buildings have been well designed so that the maximum is made of any passing breeze. Rooms either have a sea or garden view and there are two rooms that are well suited to families. Rooms do not have televisions or phones, ensuring that guests really take a break away from it all (before they reach for the Wi-Fi password, that is). Rooms also have a safe and fridge. The bathrooms are well appointed, have either a bath tub or a shower, and gorgeous smelling organic Damana products.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Atlantis was the first hotel in Las Terrenas and is one of the best. Extremely well-maintained, Gérard and his right-hand woman, Martina, are always surveying the site for details that look out of place. The hotel was built to look like a small marzipan village with strong Ibizan influences and is situated in a garden planted with palm trees that line the iridescent waters of the ocean.

The restaurant is set up close to the beach and guests have the choice to eat outside on one of the terraces, inside the restaurant building or at a table in the thatched roof pavillion on the beach - needless to mention that the latter is every guest's favourite spot to tuck into some of that delicious gourmet fare Gérard and his staff whisk up in the kitchen.

For guests arriving by car, there is a private car park and for internet fiends, there is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Some rooms don't have any connection, so make sure to enquire (at the time of booking) about which room is best if you need to be connected during your stay. There is also a small play area for children in the garden.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

One cannot speak of the Atlantis without mentioning the food. The kitchen is overseen by Gérard himself, the former French Prime Minister, François Mitterrand's personal chef at the Elysée (our equivalent of number 10 Downing Street). With that in mind, it is fair to assume that the food's going to be good - and right you would be. We tried the locust lobster accompanied by seasonal vegetables and a tangy passion fruit coulis, which was absolutely divine. Sat on a driftwood bench looking right out to the mesmerising azure waters, the moment was just perfect.

Although Gérard doesn't really cook anymore, he watches over his small empire carefully, ensuring that staff is trained to perfection but without the stuffy attitude found at restaurants serving this sort of cuisine.

All produce used is fresh and all fish and seafood on the menu is caught every morning - Gérard has his own boat and team of fishermen especially.

    Beach 8.70 /10

Although the beaches in the Dominican Republic are all public, the Atlantis has a great spot that feels secluded. The beach is just as one would expect from the Caribbean, complete with that fine white sand and emblematic glowing turquoise waters. As the hotel is right on the beach, there is no beach bar as such, but the restaurant is only a few steps away.

    To know

The hotel was the very first to be built in the area in the 70s and was taken over in the 90s by Gérard, who, as well as being the French consul for the Dominican Republic, is somewhat of a celebrity, attracting several journalists to his little slice of paradise from France every year.

It is worth noting that there is no pool, spa or gym onsite.

A million light-years away from all other resorts in the country, we uncovered the Acaya, a charming little hotel with 20 guestrooms, a family-like convivial atmosphere and a grill restaurant, right on the seafront. Of course, there is no pool and very few amenities but you will just have to cross over the road where you will be able to make the most of heavenly Playa Bonita. Moreover, the surrounding area, host to the authentic little village of Las Terrenas and the waterfalls of El Limon, does not lack points of interest!

Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.
