    Location 8.02 /10

The Bahia Estela by Viva Resorts is located nearly 4 miles from the village of Las Terrenas, on the beautiful beach of Playa Coson, northwest of the peninsula of Samana. It is reached by way of a small pathway. A taxi to the airport in Samana takes 50 minutes, but a bus only comes once every 2 hours as it must make a round trip as the road is so narrow.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The 80 rooms are divided into 24 standard rooms, 16 superior rooms and 40 suites (with a sea view). Priority therefore was given the highest quality. They are very well equipped, air-conditioned and tastefully decorated (several simple paintings). Each room has satellite television (60 channels, a remote control on the wall to avoid losing it), a large safe, an ironing board and an iron, telephone, a full refrigerator, and a large balcony overlooking the sea or the tropical garden. The suites have the benefit of a lounge area and a kitchenette with a sink and a microwave oven. The bathrooms include a shower, personal skin care products, a hair dryer and the toilets are not separated. In the superior rooms and the suites, there is a bathtub, a bathrobe and a bidet.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Built in 2005, the Bahia Estela by Viva Resorts consists of three 1-floor buildings containing 80 rooms decorated in pastel colours (pink, yellow, red, blue, green that are all found in simple local paintings). The entire setting is nicely decorated with numerous water features, ponds, waterfalls and fountains. The comfortable, large, spacious lobby houses a mezzanine where there is an area for use of the Internet, a bar acting as a games' room with billiards, table football, television, and a part that is extended onto the terrace. A beautiful swimming pool houses an aquatic bar, arranged under umbrellas - the ideal setting for relaxation and swimming.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

The Bahia Estela by Viva Resorts has only one restaurant and serves buffet style for breakfast (from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.), lunch (from 12:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and dinner (from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.), with a different theme every evening : International, Oriental, French, Dominican, and gala (refined Italian cuisine). Organised once a week, the evening gala takes place around the swimming pool, by candle light. Located under a large, airy, straw-covered pergola near the beach and the swimming pool, the buffet can accommodate up to 200 people. A musical programme hosts guests at dinner in a jazz / piano bar. The dining hall houses a gourmet area, Viva Café, an alternative restaurant to those serving a la carte and dinner is by reservation, with 39 seats. An additional payment of $ 15 is requested. A snack bar offers light restaurant services around the swimming pool from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. You also have access to different restaurants serving a la carte at the neighbouring Viva Wyndham Samana hotel (the Mediterranean restaurant offers Italian specialties, and the Bamboo restaurant offers Asian specialities), but not its main buffet "Cocoa". Room service is available 24 hours a day and breakfast is served in bed for free.

    Beach 8.45 /10

With a wide band of sand equipped with umbrellas and deck chairs, fitted mattresses and showers, the beach at Bahia Estela by Viva Resorts enjoys a convenient location. Here, the sand is a beautiful golden colour and the water is perfectly clear. A beach-bar allows you to enjoy a refreshing break at any time of day. Some non-motorised water activities (included in the package) are available on the side of the Viva Wyndham Samana, which is also the diving centre of Viva diving, certified by Padi. At the outer edge of Viva Wyndham Samana, an outdoor nightclub, shaded under a pergola, is waiting for you to dance the merengue from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. In the distance, you can admire the island of Cabrera.

    To know

Customers of Bahia Estela have access to all facilities of the adjacent Viva Wyndham Samana, except the main Cacao buffet. Those who enjoy sleeping late can order breakfast in bed and room-service is provided 24 hours a day.

    A lodging tip:

Only the building located beside the swimming pool, where the suites are arranged, enjoys a sea view. The price is a little higher but that is the price of luxury !

Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

A million light-years away from all other resorts in the country, we uncovered the Acaya, a charming little hotel with 20 guestrooms, a family-like convivial atmosphere and a grill restaurant, right on the seafront. Of course, there is no pool and very few amenities but you will just have to cross over the road where you will be able to make the most of heavenly Playa Bonita. Moreover, the surrounding area, host to the authentic little village of Las Terrenas and the waterfalls of El Limon, does not lack points of interest!

The charming boutique Hotel Atlantis, is located a short walk from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula and it is right on the beach - and what a wonderful beach it is! One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.

Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.
