    Location 8.95 /10

The hotel is located just under 2 miles from the village of Las Terrenas, on the beautiful beach of Playa Coson, north west of the peninsula of Samana. ?t takes 50 minutes to get to the airport in Samana, but the bus only comes once every 2 hours as it must make a round trip because the road is so narrow.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The 8 bungalows with 4 rooms each are scattered in a nice tropical garden, criss-crossed by small shaded walkways. They are decorated with care and great originality in 4 different styles : Creole, Moroccan, Mexican and Provencal. The colors are bright and will definitely put a smile on your face! The 32 rooms are all different and only three of them directly overlook the sea. Enjoy the setting of acacia wood and a roof of palm leaves, coloured mosaic tiles, free-style decoration from floor to ceiling, complimented by the pastel coloured walls decorated with motifs such as a whale's tail, a moon or a sun, and there are also four shutters. Spacious (45 square meters) and beautifully furnished, the air-conditioned rooms are equipped with a king-size bed, a desk, a sofa, satellite television (36 channels), a safe ($ 5 a week), a ceiling fan, a terrace with a wooden deck chair overlooking the garden or the sea, a full fridge, and telephone with direct access for international calls and Internet access (Wi-Fi). The bathroom is truly unique, in open the air, embellished with a fountain and original colorful motifs. Each bathroom provides personal skin care products, a non-separate toilet, a hair dryer, a double sink and a large tropical shower - but no bathtub - which prevents the hotel from getting a 5 * rating; few customers take baths in the Dominican Republic, where it is nearly 30°C all year !

    Overview 7.95 /10

Built in 1999, the Bahia Las Ballenas underwent renovation in November 2006. Here, there are no multi-storey buildings, which makes it easily accessible by anyone with a disability. There are no loudspeakers blaring near the swimming pool or activity organisers putting on a "show" to entertain tourists. Everything is "luxurious, calm and sensual", as Baudelaire reportedly said. He used to stay at the hotel to forget daily life, take a breath of fresh air and dive into real Dominican life. The swimming pool is beautifully designed, and has an island planted with a splendid traveler's tree. The wooden deck chairs with mattresses are spread about to let you bask in the sun peacefully, shaded by umbrellas. The towels are supplied directly in the rooms. A second swimming pool is located near the apartments and the villas offered for rent, a little further on. Near the beach, a small kiosk with four hammocks beckons you for a nap accompanied by the sound of waves.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

The restaurant / bar "El Bohïo" ("Taino" meaning a round box) is situated in the middle of the site, with one sheltered part and another part extending onto the terrace. No walls, just a pergola roof : so you can eat at any hour of the day admiring the sea, which is a little far, and the multicoloured birds that nest in trees in the garden. The chef, Paco, cooks absolutely divine food, from appetisers to desserts, prepared with help from his daughter - all of them washed down with wines of Chile, Argentina or Spain. The fixed menu written on a slate offers a choice of 14 entrées, 14 side dishes and 5 desserts. The Bahia Las Ballenas offers bed and breakfast or half board service, drinks not included, and an a la carte choice. The menus offered at breakfast are named after whales: whale calf menu for children, dolphin menu for sporty people(with cereal and fruit) or the blue whale menu.

    Beach 7.95 /10

Huge and bordered by a palm grove as far as the eye can see, the beach is situated on the other side of a small road, which is not at all busy. Its beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the region. The authorities have banned any construction within 60 meters of the sand. The entire peninsula has still not been spoiled by mass tourism. There are no major hotels and buildings around to mar the horizon. An exceptional place!

    To know

Listen to the advice of Jacqueline, a French speaking Swiss citizen, who fell in love with this beautiful place ! She will always be at your disposal to describe the customs and traditions of local people and to advise you on the best excursions. You can stroll peacefully through the streets of Las Terrenas and discover your own pace of Dominican life. The atmosphere is typical and the people are extremely warm. $ They are accustomed to seeing French people. A community composed of nearly 400 French compatriots is present here. A French school with more than 60 students has even opened here !
The island of Las Ballenas, in the shape of a whale, which can be seen opposite the beach, gave its name to the hotel. Some villas and apartments are rented to permanent residents of the hotel.

Bel hôtel de type bungalows traditionnels, situé sur une des plages les plus magnifiques de la péninsule de Samana en République dominicaine. Idéal pour les famille ou les couples en quête de tranquilité.

A million light-years away from all other resorts in the country, we uncovered the Acaya, a charming little hotel with 20 guestrooms, a family-like convivial atmosphere and a grill restaurant, right on the seafront. Of course, there is no pool and very few amenities but you will just have to cross over the road where you will be able to make the most of heavenly Playa Bonita. Moreover, the surrounding area, host to the authentic little village of Las Terrenas and the waterfalls of El Limon, does not lack points of interest!

Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.

Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.
