    Location 7.5 /10

The Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo is located 3 miles east of Las Terrenas, north-west of the Samana peninsula. Taxis take 50 minutes to the airport in Samana, but buses take 2 hours as they must make a detour because the road is too narrow.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel has 396 rooms, including 244 standard rooms and 152 junior suites. They are furnished with rattan furniture and decorated in the local style, with famous naive paintings. All rooms are equipped with a king-size bed, direct telephone for international dialling, air conditioning and fan, cable television (37 channels), an electronic safe ($ 30 a week), a balcony, a desk and a full refrigerator, plus, facilities for making tea and coffee. The bathroom has a bathtub equipped with a handle for the elderly or disabled, personal skin care products, a hair dryer, a magnifying mirror for makeup, but also very useful for those who have contact lenses. The junior suites have, in addition, a separate shower, a separate toilet, and bathrobes.

    Overview 7.95 /10

The lobby is magnificent and immense, airy and all white, with an original iron sculpture representing trees in the centre. The 396 rooms at the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo are housed in 23 two-storey buildings without elevators. The swimming pool, located near the beach, is truly immense. It has a kid's pool, three showers, sunshades, wooden deckchairs with mattresses. Many ramps have been installed around the hotel, very convenient for disabled people on wheelchairs. You can relax at the Bahia Spa, where lovely masseuses pamper you with various anti-stress treatments or you can test the fitness room of the Bahia Gym. A little to the left, near the entrance, you will find a large Jacuzzi nestled on a large wooden terrace equipped wooden deckchairs with mattresses and sunshades. Here things are done properly! Near the beach, your children will love the kid's club, which offers many activities: they won't be bored for a second!

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The main restaurant is a large room, pleasing and easily accessible from the r?ception. It offers both local and international cuisine, varied and of good quality, served buffet style with a different theme every night (Dominican, oriental, Mexican, American, Spanish and international). The Orquidea serves an excellent breakfast (from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.), lunch (from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and dinner (from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.). As part of your all-inclusive service, you can also choose one of the three restaurants serving a la carte, with a reservation, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (seafood, oriental and gourmet). The seafood restaurant enjoys the best sea view of course. Judicious: menus are written in four languages! For "big eaters" who are never satisfied, snacks are offered on a wooden terrace overlooking the sea, where you can have light meals 24/24 hours! At least five bars are available throughout the day without moderation: at the swimming pool, at the beach, at the snack bar, at the lobby and at the theater.

    Beach 8.70 /10

Well maintained, the beach of the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo enjoys a beautiful environment. Big and beautiful with its clear turquoise waters, it offers more space than many other beaches on the Samana peninsula. Surrounded by trees, it holds some pleasant shaded areas. Deckchairs, mattresses and towels are provided free of charge. A small beach bar, shaped as a straw hut, awaits you throughout the day to offer you a drink. A certified Padi diving centre offers a free introduction course in the swimming pool.

    To know

A brand new hotel that opened in 2006, the Gran Bahia Principe Portillo belongs to the Spanish chain, Gran Bahia Principe. You will find many souvenir shops and car rental agencies, restaurants and offices for organising excursions. The hotel has numerous ramps for people with disabilities, and two rooms are entirely dedicated to the needs of disabled guests.

However, the rooms are very comfortable, clean and while quite basic, they are colourful and very clean. This is an ideal place to stay for couples and families (there are two-storey bungalows) on a budget and looking for a quiet base to explore the rest of the area from. Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.

The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.
