    Location 8.75 /10

The Viva Wyndham Samana is located 3.7 miles from the village of Las Terrenas, on the beautiful beach of Playa Coson, north west of the peninsula of Samana. A taxi takes you to the airport in Samanain in around 50 mintes, but the bus comes once every 2 hours and it must make a round trip as the road is so narrow.

    Accommodation 8.50 /10

All 218 rooms are air-conditioned, divided into 144 of a superior category, 62 villas and 12 small family-style apartments. The majority of rooms benefit from a sea view. Decorated in local style, subdued and elegant, the rooms are separated over a wide area of lush vegetation and are well-maintained. They are all equipped with two queen size beds, satellite TV (the signal is poor and the remote is hung on the wall: don't try to get better reception!), an electronic safe (extra fee), an ironing board and iron, a terrace or balcony, but no refrigerator or telephone. The small bathroom has a flexible shower , toilet (not separate), a hair dryer and personal skin care products. The villas, decorated with simple paintings, have a kitchenette, a king-size bed and a telephone. The fridge contains two sodas and two bottles of water, replenished daily. The terraces of the villas are just 20 metres from the beach.

    Overview 8.50 /10

Nestled at the bottom of the Samana peninsula, the Viva Wyndham Samana is worth a stay. Standing on the location of the former lively fishing village of Las Terrenas, the hotel, belonging to the chain group Viva Wyndham Resorts, rises amid lush vegetation which is pleasing to the eyes. Built in 2004, this modern, blindingly white hotel is organised around a vast swimming pool sufficiently equipped with deck chairs and umbrellas. Right next to it, on the path to the beach, a kid's club with a playground and water slides, a small basketball area and a kid's swimming pool are provided. The towels are free of charge with a debit card system. However, the showers are on the beach. The rooms are housed in a long building of two floors that offer a nice view of the gardens.

    Food and drink 7.75 /10

In addition to the main restaurant Cocoa, with its vast sun-lounge terrace, the hotel has two other restaurants that serve a la carte (reservations are required), for dinner only. Located near the beach, the Mediterranean restaurant offers Italian specialties, and the Bamboo restaurant serves Asian specialities : You can start with sushi or nems, then attack the honey roast duck marinated in coconut, and end with a ginger flan or fried banana with honey : a real treat ! The main restaurant serves international cuisine, buffet style. Every day, a different theme is offered to guests. The different snacks will take care of your hunger from 10 a.m. to 7 a.m. Two bars are available as part of your all-inclusive service - one on the beach (from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.) and the other by the swimming pool (the Atlantico bar is open 24/7). For those who are lazier, breakfast is served in bed at no extra cost. In the restaurant, ask the waiters for tea, coffee or hot chocolate because there is no self service. Some days, freshly squeezed fruit juice is provided.

    Beach 8.75 /10

The long stretch of sand is equipped with umbrellas and deck chairs and the beach of Viva Wyndham Samana enjoys a convenient location. Here, the sand has a beautiful golden colour and the water is perfectly clear. An analysis report is posted publicly to indicate much information about the quality and cleanliness of the water (presence of algae, oil, garbage, paper, glass, plastic bag ...), tides and even the weather. In any case, during our stay the water was excellent. A beach-bar allows a break for refreshments at any time of the day. Just beside the Mediterranean restaurant, the Bamboo restaurant and the theatre facing the sea, there are some non-motorised water activities available (included in the all-inclusive package). On the west side you can visit the Padi certified Viva diving center. At the far east end of the beach, an outdoor nightclub shaded by a pergola, is available for dancing the merengue, from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. The beach continues on to the neighbouring Viva Bahia Resort Estala hotel. In the distance, you can admire the island of Cabrera.

    To know

Customers wear a bracelet in a different colour depending on their language, a very convenient system for the hotel staff. The Samana Peninsula is one of the most beautiful places on the island. Especially green and well preserved, it offers many opportunities for excursions. From January to March, boat excursions are organised to observe the whales in the Bay of Samana.

    A lodging tip :

Directly located on the beach, the spacious villas are recommended for honeymoon couples. However, the superior category rooms are quieter and far away from the activities on the beach and its two restaurants, bar, concert hall and nightclub that are sometimes noisy. Families are advised to book small apartments.

Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

A million light-years away from all other resorts in the country, we uncovered the Acaya, a charming little hotel with 20 guestrooms, a family-like convivial atmosphere and a grill restaurant, right on the seafront. Of course, there is no pool and very few amenities but you will just have to cross over the road where you will be able to make the most of heavenly Playa Bonita. Moreover, the surrounding area, host to the authentic little village of Las Terrenas and the waterfalls of El Limon, does not lack points of interest!

The charming boutique Hotel Atlantis, is located a short walk from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula and it is right on the beach - and what a wonderful beach it is! One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.

Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.
