Particularly well located on the Samana peninsula, Palococo is perfect for couples in search of tranquillity. A small haven of peace, close to Las Terrenas, a charming touristic fishing village that is quite lively.

    Location 7.98 /10

    The Palococo is located in the north-west of the Samana peninsula, 5 minutes from Las Terrenas. A taxi will take you to the airport in Samana in 50 minutes - the bus comes once every 2 hours and it has to make a round trip because the road is too narrow.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

    The hotel was built in 1992 and the 16 rooms and one suite are housed in nine bungalows arranged around the swimming pool. Decorated in the local style, the rooms are each equipped with a double bed, a mini-bar (paid), cable television (40 channels), a fan (and air conditioning in half of them), telephone, a desk, window shutters, a safe (? 1.5 per day) and a small terrace. They all offer a view of the beautiful garden. The windows are equipped with mosquito nets. The bathroom has a large shower with a fixed handle, non-separate toilet, two soaps, but no hair dryer.

    Overview 7.20 /10

    Located on the main avenue of Las Terrenas, only 5 minutes from a bustling area, the hotel is organised around an exuberant garden. The accommodation is scattered in the form of small bungalows all around the swimming pool, surrounded by deck chairs and umbrellas. You can reach them by way of small winding alleyways through the beautiful tropical garden which is perfectly maintained.

    Food and drink 6.95 /10

    At the entrance of the hotel, the Palococo bar is situated along the main avenue. Open to all, it attracts both passing tourists and the local population. It serves only breakfast, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. In the evening, you may enjoy delicious tropical cocktails there, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m;

    To know

    Located 5 minutes from the sea, Palococo is ideally located on the Bay of Samana. The beaches of Cozon and La Bonita, known for their clear water and fine sand, are within arm's reach. And to facilitate your transport, the Tuk Tuk Beach, a small, yellow and black striped train, that looks as though it has come straight out of an episode of Daktari, provides a free shuttle service between the hotel and the beach at Las Terrenas. All rooms are located on the ground floor, so it presents no problem for disabled or elderly guests. Beware that there is no restaurant at Palococo, but the nearby town of Las Terrenas, just under a mile away, is full of small restaurants which are nice and cheap.

    A lodging tip :

    Only eight rooms are equipped with air conditioning, another eight are equipped only with a fan.

      The small exclusive La Tortuga is simple but extremely peaceful and relaxing. With 10 thatched-roof bungalows located in a beautiful sheltered exotic garden around the pool, there isn't much else to this establishment. However, the rooms are very comfortable, clean and while quite basic, they are colourful and very clean. This is an ideal place to stay for couples and families (there are two-storey bungalows) on a budget and looking for a quiet base to explore the rest of the area from. La Tortuga is just across the road from the main beach in Las Terrenas.

      Residencia del Paseo is right in the heart of Las Terrenas just across the road from the main beach and restaurants. Although the hotel sits in prime location, the rooms leave a lot to be desired. A simple frill free option for travellers on a budget who also need a private kitchen (every room has its own kitchen). The hotel could do with a good clean, especially in the rooms. A below average base to explore the rest of the peninsula from.

      Featured for the sixth year running on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold list, The Peninsula House is one of those luxury guesthouses that will transport you to a time passed while providing guests with all the expected modern-day amenities. With only six rooms, the colonial house is half-way between a maison d'hôtes and the home of the owners; art collector Marie-Claude Thiebault, partner Cary Guy and her grown-up son, Thomas Stamm. And we'd have to agree with Traveller - The Peninsula House truly is the best hotel in the country. The tropical Victorian plantation house sits on top of a hill looking out to the green exotic surroundings and the iridescent turquoise waters below, amidst well manicured gardens - and that's just the outside.

      The Villas Mariposas is located across the street from the beach in Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula. A small resort hotel of very basic bungalow accommodation in a leafy garden with a main pool and bar, the hotel is the ideal option for groups of friends or families on a small budget. Villas Mariposas is more of a base to explore the region from rather than somewhere you would spend entire days.

      Sublime Samana, part of the Small Luxury Hotels label, is a five-star hotel located within a large holiday complex in Las Terrenas. The hotel is great if you want spacious contemporary accommodation on the beach and if you want to be left alone by hotel staff. However, despite officially being a boutique hotel of 18 rooms, it doesn't feel like being at boutique hotel nor does it feel very intimate due to its location within the larger Viva Residence. The hotel looks fairly good but service and facilities need a bit of improvement. Unfortunately for Sublime, it fell a star short of being top-notch for us.

      The charming boutique Hotel Atlantis, is located a short walk from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula and it is right on the beach - and what a wonderful beach it is! One of the first hotels to be built on the peninsula, it was taken over by Frenchman Gérard Prystasz, (the private chef of former French president, François Mitterrand), so the food and restaurant setting are worth the detour even if you're not staying at the hotel. Quaint and decorated in a simple yet tasteful 'island' style, the hotel is of a very good standard - a really great hotel all round that sails right into our top spot for Las Terrenas without a doubt.
