    Location 3.0 /10

This legendary Lisbon hotel is in the equally legendary Bairro Alto district, next to the Chiado district. The hotel looks out onto Praça Luis de Camoes, where several tram lines converge. The Bairro Alto currently has, and always has had, a reputation for its artistic life and numerous theatres. The district has, since times immemorial, been the meeting place of artists, actors, intellectuals and revolutionaries, and its soul has remained to this present day.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

55 spacious rooms, including 4 suites, welcome guests into a sober and sophisticated ambiance. The rooms are decorated in understated colours which are representative, whether they be ivory white (the light reflected off the narrow paved streets), yellow (the colour of the tramway), blue (the Tagus) or terracotta (the tiled roofs). All the rooms are decorated in the same way, the only differences being their size and the colour of the walls. There are 6 different categories: attic, single, superior, deluxe, prestige and suite. All rooms are equipped with an LCD television, DVD player, Wifi, a minibar, a safe and air-conditioning. The bathrooms are decorated in a modern style with a few touches of the past. The marble and black and white tiling adds a retro touch to them, while the free-standing basin gives the place a modern feel. Some of the bathrooms have both a bathtub and a shower, while the others just have a bathtub.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The decor in this hotel (a member of the 'Leading Small Hotels of the World' group) is minimalist, refined and at times a little cold. The reception hall, for example, is huge but completely devoid of any objects. The floor is marble. The straight lines traced by the beige walls are broken here and there by archways. The reception desk is tucked away in one of the many nooks and crannies to the right of the entrance hall The small relaxation area on a raised mezzanine is a nice place to read (newspapers and books provided) or watch television in a cosy atmosphere. There are warm colours and exposed wood, and the room is decorated with photos, ethnic objects, rush mats and large comfy sofas. A few steps below is the bar, which is decorated in 70's designer furnishings and includes a weirdly shaped black formica table. Jazz concerts are staged on Wednesday evenings and a DJ is booked to pep up the atmosphere on Thursday and Friday nights. A rooftop bar with a terrace offers a fantastic view over the Tagus. Salads, sandwiches and other cold snacks are served here and the bar is open from 12:30pm until midnight, and until 10:00pm in the winter, depending on the weather. For relaxation, there is a gym and a beauty centre where you may enjoy a massage.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The Flores restaurant serves fusion cuisine with a Mediterranean and Portuguese twist. The menu is changed on a monthly basis and the buffet is changed every season. A gourmet dinner is on the menu on the first Wednesday of every month. Breakfast and lunch are served as buffets, whilst dinner is chosen a la carte'. The decor is sober and sophisticated, with a few black and white photos displayed on the walls.

    To know

The hotel belongs to the highly prestigious 'Leading Small Hotels of the World' group and it is housed in a building that dates back to 1845. It used to be called the 'Hotel of Europe' and it was a favourite haunt among artists. It later closed, but reopened in 1921 as the 'Grand Hotel of Europe'. It closed again in 1974, the year of the revolution, but was purchased in 2001 and once more opened its doors in May 2005 following renovation.

What better way to spend a holiday in Lisbon than finding yourself bang in the middle of the historic district of Chiado? If this sounds like your cup of tea, the Lisboa Regency Chiado is for you, but bear in mind that it does not have a restaurant or any facilities other than a bar. It is, nevertheless, the ideal place for a weekend in the Portuguese capital.

The Metropole is a small, charming and rather discrete hotel. It is ideally located on Rossio Square, which makes it easy to explore the city without wasting time getting around on public transport. If art deco is your thing, then you will probably find this establishment to your liking. If it isn't, however, you might find certain elements of the interior to be rather kitsch. It's a matter of taste!

The Tivoli Lisboa is one of the best five-star hotels we've had the pleasure of visiting in this city. For starters, it enjoys a prime location at the heart of the city on one of the most prestigious avenues in Lisbon, the Avenida da Liberdade. It really does have so many assets, including an outdoor pool set amid a very pleasant little botanical garden, not to mention a panoramic restaurant which offers exceptional views across the city. Welcome to a world of luxury where every last detail counts!

Part of the local luxury hotel and restaurant group, Lagrimas, the Hotel da Estrela, is a small boutique hotel of 19 rooms located in a converted private home deep within Lisbon's narrow winding streets. Contemporary and pleasant, the highlight here, aside from the school themed décor, is the restaurant, where we sampled some of the best squid we have ever had the privilege of tasting on our travels across the world. A member of the Small Leading Hotels label, the hotel is indeed fully deserving of its reputation. An ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples and due to its central location, most sights are within walking distance.
