Part of the local luxury hotel and restaurant group, Lagrimas, the Hotel da Estrela, is a small boutique hotel of 19 rooms located in a converted private home deep within Lisbon's narrow winding streets. Contemporary and pleasant, the highlight here, aside from the school themed décor, is the restaurant, where we sampled some of the best squid we have ever had the privilege of tasting on our travels across the world. A member of the Small Leading Hotels label, the hotel is indeed fully deserving of its reputation. An ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples and due to its central location, most sights are within walking distance.

    Location 4.54 /10

Located in the southern half of the city in the Estrela neighbourhood, the hotel is close to the Basilica da Estrela and a large park, the Jardim da Estrela. The surroundings are otherwise fairly quiet and residential with a handful of local eateries. The neighbourhood of Baixa is a 10-minute walk away, and most attractions are within walking distance. The airport and train station are within a 20-minute drive of the hotel.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

In total there are 19 rooms split into 13 Standard Classics (7 have twin beds and 6 have double beds) and 6 Suites. The rooms vary in size, but the style remains very similar, with thick grey carpets adorned with chalkboard makings pertaining to the city, crisp white walls and bed linen, cut through with a slice of lime green in the headboard. The décor can seem a little cold and clinical at first, but soon grows on you due to the high comfort level. All rooms have flat-screen televisions, a mini-bar and safe.

The bathrooms are also in a grey and white palette, with Castelbel luxury amenities from Porto. Some bathrooms have bath tubs, others have showers, so if you have a preference for one or the other, make this clear at the time of booking.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Open in 2010, the tiny hotel has an authentic local setting inside what used to be a private home, which gives the hotel all its charm. The house actually used to be the palace of the Count of Paraty (a town in Brazil). The décor is themed to look like a school, with original wooden school tables used throughout, various schoolbooks, chalkboards and other memorabilia from our school days. The reason for the theme is that the area of Estrela is full of various schools and the hotel has a partnership with a nearby hospitality school.

In terms of facilities, there is no spa or health club, but massages can be outsourced with enough prior notice and are usually carried out in the rooms (which must be big enough, so do enquire about this directly with the hotel). There is also a wonderful restaurant (see the food and drink section below), a bar and a lovely garden, which is a rarity in the city centre. Here there are cosy beanbags for sunbathing around the picturesque pond and with a view of the charming nearby Basilica da Estrela. For colder days, there is a library with the full collection of Jules Vernes' adventures in the library behind the reception area.

    Food and drink 9.90 /10

The hotel restaurant, 'Cantina da Estrela', also themed on a school, is a cosy light and bright place to come for lunch and dinner, even for the locals. Here, diners choose how much they pay for the dishes they have by giving every course a mark. The prices paid are usually fairly high as the standard is one of the best in the city in terms of casual dining. It is at the Cantina that we tasted some of the best squid we have ever had across the world. The restaurant also serves a wide selection of the country's delicious wines, which are must. NB: the restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays. For half-board stays, the hotel has partnered up with restaurants in the surroundings, so no one misses out on an included meal.

There is also room service for guests who prefer a more intimate dining option.

The hotel also has an honesty bar, where guests mark the number of drinks they have had next to their room number and the total goes on their room tab. This creates a relaxed atmosphere if guests want to spend an evening at the hotel or want to have a night cap.

    To know

The hotel actually has a partnership with the neighbouring school, to which it owes its school themed décor. With regards to parking for guests arriving by car, the hotel has a private car park - charges are 15 Euro per day.

The Lagrimas group has several properties in Portugal, including the Relais Châteaux Vila Monte hotel in the Algarve, which we have also reviewed (read the review here).

The Four Seasons Ritz hotel really shows its daring side by combining the standards of a luxury hotel with the eccentricity of the artistic world. It offers all the comfort and services that you would expect of an upmarket hotel, with an added touch of eccentricity and colour from the paintings and sculptures by Portuguese artists.

The residential Americano hotel is more adapted to young people with a low budget as it has few amenities. Moreover, the rooms are quite basic. It is definitely to be recommended to backpackers, for example. The undeniable asset of this hotel, however, is its central location in the heart of Lisbon, not far from the district of Rossio and perfect if you are looking to enjoy the local night-life.

The Florida hotel will attract fans of the 1960's and the 'art deco' style, all of which is wrapped up in a cinema decoration theme. Although this hotel is a little out of the way, it does provide good-quality accommodation. Some of you will enjoy the liveliness of Marquês de Pombal Square, others will find the place too noisy... This hotel definitely seems to be better suited to couples and young people than families; indeed, you can pretend that you are Marilyn Monroe or Humphrey Bogart for the weekend!

The Tivoli Lisboa is one of the best five-star hotels we've had the pleasure of visiting in this city. For starters, it enjoys a prime location at the heart of the city on one of the most prestigious avenues in Lisbon, the Avenida da Liberdade. It really does have so many assets, including an outdoor pool set amid a very pleasant little botanical garden, not to mention a panoramic restaurant which offers exceptional views across the city. Welcome to a world of luxury where every last detail counts!
