This brand new designer hotel in Lisbon is sure to wow customers looking for a 'Zen' minimalist atmosphere. It is admittedly not very central, but the Jerónimos Monastery is nearby, and the famous pastry shop which invented the acclaimed Pasteis de Nata is just a stone's throw away This hotel is to be recommended to foodies and fans of refined, designer decor.

    Location 6.0 /10

As its name suggests, the Jeronimo 8 is just a stone's throw away from the famous Jerónimos Monastery. Lisbon city centre is not very close by, but there is a tram which passes near to the hotel. If you are staying at the Jeronimo 8, make the most of its location close to the famous monastery, and the Belém Tower a little further away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 61 rooms and 4 suites to accommodate guests in a very stylish designer setting. The first thing you notice is the original way that the room numbers are indicated in front of each room on the fitted carpet running the length of the corridor. Once you have found the right number and are inside your room, the decor may seem a little unwelcoming. Every room is decorated in the same way, size being the only difference. The furniture is black, the walls are white, and the desk is a table made of glass and black wood. The rooms also have a television, a telephone, a safe, a minibar, air-conditioning and free Internet access. It is worth knowing that 10 of the rooms have their own private terrace. As for the bathrooms, they are clad throughout with grey marble and they all have a shower and two washbasins, hospitality products and a dressing gown. The only slight drawback is the rather high step up to the shower, which is not very easy to negotiate if you are of a certain age or are simply not very supple.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Jeronimo 8 is a designer hotel in an old Portuguese residence dating back to the 1940's. The owners completely renovated the building to convert it into a hotel in August 2008. It is not the most conspicuous of addresses, as it has no name or signs on the outside to indicate that it is a hotel. Just to give you an idea, the facade is completely white, as is everything in the stylishly designed lobby (sofas, walls, stones). A few dashes of colour (brown armchairs, red lamps, black parquet) brighten things up, but there are not many decorative objects other than a few ethnic statues made of forged iron and paintings hanging on the walls. Guests can sit back in sofas and catch a bit of sun on the rooftop sun terrace, and there is also a designer bar serving Portuguese wines, cocktails, light meals and the famous Pasteis de Nata in a red and white setting next to the lobby.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The restaurant is a long windowless room which offers no outside views. It is rather dark, with the black walls and parquet not helping matters. The only colour is provided by the all-white seats and red lamps. The restaurant is only open for breakfast, which is served as a buffet. Fans of organic food can enjoy their meals safe in the knowledge that all the products used are organic.

    To know

The famous pastry shop, Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, which was founded in 1837 and makes the famous Pasteis de Nata (a Lisbon pastry), is just a stone's throw away from the hotel. Straight out of the oven and still piping hot, you really must not miss out on this treat, which is great as an afternoon snack or for breakfast.

Part of the local luxury hotel and restaurant group, Lagrimas, the Hotel da Estrela, is a small boutique hotel of 19 rooms located in a converted private home deep within Lisbon's narrow winding streets. Contemporary and pleasant, the highlight here, aside from the school themed décor, is the restaurant, where we sampled some of the best squid we have ever had the privilege of tasting on our travels across the world. A member of the Small Leading Hotels label, the hotel is indeed fully deserving of its reputation. An ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples and due to its central location, most sights are within walking distance.

The residential Americano hotel is more adapted to young people with a low budget as it has few amenities. Moreover, the rooms are quite basic. It is definitely to be recommended to backpackers, for example. The undeniable asset of this hotel, however, is its central location in the heart of Lisbon, not far from the district of Rossio and perfect if you are looking to enjoy the local night-life.

The Tivoli Lisboa is one of the best five-star hotels we've had the pleasure of visiting in this city. For starters, it enjoys a prime location at the heart of the city on one of the most prestigious avenues in Lisbon, the Avenida da Liberdade. It really does have so many assets, including an outdoor pool set amid a very pleasant little botanical garden, not to mention a panoramic restaurant which offers exceptional views across the city.
