    Location 8.5 /10

The hotel enjoys a peaceful location on a little street parallel to the nearby Avenida da Liberdade, a 10-minute walk from the Chiado district and Barrio Alto. The bus from the airport stops just a stone's throw away on Avenida da Liberdade, which is very practical!

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The Lisboa Plaza has 94 rooms and 12 suites housed in a 6-storey building. The rooms are all carefully decorated and fitted with all the standard mod-cons (air-conditioning, television, telephone, minibar, safe, hair-dryer, etc.), and the marble fittings in the bathroom and jug of Port to sample in your room are just two of the little details that will help make a stay here enjoyable. Depending on their size and the view from the window, the rooms are divided into standard and superior categories, so whilst the standard rooms overlook the street below, the superior rooms overlook the garden. When we visited in September 2008, we were told that all the rooms were going to be renovated.

    Overview 7.45 /10

This 6-storey hotel, full of retro charm, was built in the 1950's and has belonged to the same family since 1953. Its old style and elaborate decor where every detail plays its part takes you back in time and is sure to please some visitors, though others might just find it all a bit old-fashioned. The hotel has a bar where Port, pre-dinner drinks and a selection of dishes are served, and a little veranda from which to watch the comings and goings on the street outside. For smokers, there is an English-style smoking room not far from the bar, with a handsome fireplace and comfortable red sofas and armchairs. The ideal place for non-smokers to go for a pre- or post-dinner drink, on the other hand, is the little blue lounge, its television, magazines and books making it the perfect place to relax. The hotel also has an Internet area and meeting rooms.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The dining room opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but it is a little cramped and dark, with just a single window that faces a wall outside, and the decor is a little plain. Breakfast is a nicely varied buffet, and coffee fans will be happy to make use of the excellent Nespresso machine, made famous by none other than Hollywood star George Clooney, and which serves short or long coffees, as well as cappuccinos. Also served at breakfast are the fantastic Pasteis de Nata de Belem, Lisbon's best-known pastries. Don't hold back on these! The cuisine served at lunch and dinner is Mediterranean style.

    To know

There is an adorable little blue and white terrace on the 5th floor where guests can relax in the sunshine, with chaise longues, a bar and small lounge areas to help really make the most of Lisbon's climate.

The Tivoli Lisboa is one of the best five-star hotels we've had the pleasure of visiting in this city. For starters, it enjoys a prime location at the heart of the city on one of the most prestigious avenues in Lisbon, the Avenida da Liberdade. It really does have so many assets, including an outdoor pool set amid a very pleasant little botanical garden, not to mention a panoramic restaurant which offers exceptional views across the city. The Britania hotel is located in a quieter street than the Avenida da Liberdade and really is worth bearing in mind when planning a trip to the city. Its outdated and Art Deco-style decor make this a very charming hotel, with pleasantly decorated rooms and a small lounge area in the lobby where you can relax and read.

Part of the local luxury hotel and restaurant group, Lagrimas, the Hotel da Estrela, is a small boutique hotel of 19 rooms located in a converted private home deep within Lisbon's narrow winding streets. Contemporary and pleasant, the highlight here, aside from the school themed décor, is the restaurant, where we sampled some of the best squid we have ever had the privilege of tasting on our travels across the world. A member of the Small Leading Hotels label, the hotel is indeed fully deserving of its reputation. An ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples and due to its central location, most sights are within walking distance.
