Welcome to JoŽl's place. Originally from the principality of Andorra, he is the owner of the La Mamiecoffee plantation, perched 800m at the top of a jungle-covered mountain, which he will surely take you on a visit of. In the meantime, he will welcome you into his seaside home next to the tiny Rio Los Patos, one of the shortest rivers in the world. You will be lodged in a uniquely decorated comfortable suite, be able to swim in the pool, and dine while watching children splash about at the mouth of the Rio Los Patos, where it flows into the Caribbean Sea. One of our favourites.

    Location 10.0 /10

Right next to the Rio Los Patos, one of the smallest rivers in the world, in the fishing village of Los Patos, 2.5 miles from Paraiso and 25 miles from Barahona in the south-west of the Dominican Republic, the most preserved region in the country. It takes about 3h 30m by car to reach the airport of Santo Domingo, the country's capital. The airport of Barahona is 22 miles away (40 minutes by car), but it is not really used at the moment.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

There is only guest room at the La Mamie River Beach House but it is a 45m≤ suite with decor that has been carefully chosen: masks made out of the local wood lying on the small wooden desk, Naive Art paintings hanging on the walls, Tainos patterns, etc. The charm of the place can be felt as soon as you step onto the lovely rug-covered wooden floor. Comfortably settled in on the 2-person sofa bed (perfect for children), you can watch television on a large flat-screen TV with a choice of 200 channels. A wooden staircase leads to the bedroom upstairs. There is no air-conditioning but a ceiling fan hanging above the bed will cool you off a little. Plus, with none of that background noise made by an air-conditioner, you'll have no trouble hearing the waves lapping on the shore! In any case, you'll never be overly hot thanks to the sea breeze. In the morning, you can have breakfast in your kitchen, which is equipped with a refrigerator, a freezer, a sink, cutlery and tea and coffee-making facilities (you will surely be provided with coffee from the La Mamie coffee plantation!). Room service is available until midnight. You can admire the Caribbean Sea from the wooden terrace. For any items of value, there is a free digital safe large enough to store a laptop and keep in mind that the Wi-Fi Internet access is free. The bathroom is as nicely decorated as the rest, with a special mention for the WC decorated with shells and starfish. The candles are as decorative as they are useful in case there is a power outage. Shells and starfish are again seen in the patterns on the shower curtain. Finally, you will also have a hair-dryer, which is rather rare in hotels in the Barahona region.

    Overview 7.70 /10

JoŽl and his wife have been welcoming guests into their thatched roof seaside home next to the village of El Patos since 2011. Accommodation is limited to one room, or rather, one suite, which has been superbly decorated. The house is surrounded by a garden full of coconut, palm and banana trees that stretches right out to the sea, which can be admired from under a thatched roof hut. To the right, you can see the mouth of Rio Los Patos ('ducks' in Spanish), one of the shortest rivers in the world: its source is just a hundred metres away! Setback from the sea and facing the mountain is the 2m-deep supervised swimming pool. There are three parasols and two deckchairs at your disposal but no shower. There is also a small wading pool for children. Towels are provided for free. The spot is very peaceful and calm.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

For your meals, head to the small restaurant at the edge of Rio Los Patos, at the spot where it flows into the Caribbean Sea. It is 5 minutes on foot from the hotel following the road. You can be happy all day long in front of the crystal-clear water, envious of the children swimming in the river. Whet your appetite by drinking some lemonade or cherry juice. You can enjoy your breakfast in the suite or under the palapa in the garden facing the sea. You will have the opportunity to try the La Mamie coffee produced by the owner.

    Beach 8.20 /10

The El Patos beach is simply heavenly; plus, you don't often get the occasion to swim at the mouth of a river! With white sand and clear water, the Rio Los Patos seems to have been created for swimming in. A dreamy spot where you can enjoy a cold drink and have something to eat at the restaurant bar between swims.

    To know

Fancy a bit of adventure? Ask JoŽl to take you to his coffee plantation, La Mamie, perched 800m above sea level in the heights of Paraiso. After 45 minutes on a 4x4 (or an hour on the back of a mule) on a rugged track, not without having crossed a river or two, you are rewarded by a magnificent view of the valley stretching all the way out to the Caribbean Sea. This is where JoŽl, originally from the principality of Andorra, has been producing 100% organic arabica coffee since August 2008. Playing tribute to his deceased mother, La Mamie is an affectionate nickname for the women in this country (not just mothers but also sisters, aunts, nieces, grandmothers, mothers-in-law?).
