The Dom Pedro Baia could do with a good lick of paint, if appearances are anything to go by. All the same, that is no reason for the reception staff not to offer a smile when they see new guests arriving... Our initial experiences here were not particularly pleasant, but a holiday is about more than just first impressions. The establishment belongs to the Dom Pedro hotel chain, which also owns several other hotels on the island. It was opened in 1972, and although the external architecture is not very easy on the eye, the facilities inside are more up to scratch. The Dom Pedro Baia is open all year round.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Dom Pedro Baia is in Machico, a little village located barely 5 minutes from the airport. It is a highly practical location, but the drawback is the noise pollution caused by aeroplanes taking off and landing. Nevertheless, Madeira's airport is not as busy as the main European airports. Funchal is 12 mi away, and the journey takes just over 20 minutes by car.

    Accommodation 7.25 /10

The establishment's 218 rooms are split into three categories. Inside, the decor looks a bit old-fashioned (flowery curtains are not exactly cutting edge) but overall the rooms are comfortable and generously proportioned. The superior rooms have a small balcony from which you can enjoy the view out over the sea, but the standard rooms do not have this privilege. As far as the facilities are concerned, all the essential features are there, from a television to air-conditioning, not to mention an empty fridge. As for the bathroom, although it is not very big, it has been provided with a bathtub.

    Overview 6.90 /10

The Dom Pedro Baia doesn't exactly set the heart racing, what with its rather unappealing design. From the outside, all that can be seen is a big and rather unwelcoming tower. The lobby is no better. It is a furnished space and lacks light, in spite of the large picture windows overlooking the sea. The reception is built into the wall, and opposite it is the lounge area. Outside, the hotel swimming pool is surrounded by a solarium. The rectangular pool could do with a bit of sprucing up, and the plastic deckchairs certainly don't do much to help the decor here. However, the team of staff here is friendly with the guests. Regardless of the air temperature, this seawater pool is heated all year round! Children can splash around safely in a pool beside the main pool.

    Food and drink 7.00 /10

The establishment only has one restaurant: the Baia de Zarco. It therefore opens for all three meals of the day, from 7:30am to 10:00am, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm, and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It can seat up to 180 people, and although the tables are not cramped together, it is not a very intimate place for a meal. The cream colour scheme is nothing to write home about, but the light wood furniture is a nice touch. The style of the cuisine is essentially international, and it is served as a buffet. There is a different theme for dinner every evening.

    To know

The hotel overlooks the sea, but it is not right next to the beach. It is not very far away, though. Machico has a natural beach covered with volcanic rocks and an artificial beach covered with golden sand.
