In the very heart of Madrid, half-way between the Peurta del Sol, the Gran Via, the Neptune Fountain and Plaza Santa Ana, the Astuias hotel is a modest establishment with 175 guest rooms and a restaurant that offers a different menu every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Complete renovations are set to take place in 2011 or 2012, with the aim of obtaining a 4th star. Nevertheless, during our visit, a renovation of the various varieties of guest rooms was not part of the programme and, as it is, some of them are more modern than others.

    • To know

    • Half-way between the Peurta de Sol and the Las Letras neighbourhood, the Asturias hotel is in the very heart of the city, on Plaza de Canalejas. You can easily get to many of the tourist sites on foot from the hotel, such as the famous Golden Triangle of Art, which includes the Prado, Thyssen, and Reina Sofia museums, as well as the Royal Palace and Retiro Park, among other attractions. What is more, this neighbourhood is always animated no matter what time of the day it is, since it is overflowing with not only tapas bars, eateries, and restaurants, but also theatres, cinemas, and all types of shops. As for public transport, the closest metro stations are Sevilla (line 2) and Son (lines 1, 2, and 3), which also offer connections to the suburban trains. Indeed, this hotel is at the very centre of the city and constitutes a perfect starting point for visiting all areas of Madrid. Just a few feet from the hotel, several taxi stations and bus stops are there to provide transport to all four corners of the capital. Barajas airport is some 11 mi away.

    • Available in various categories, the hotel has 176 guest rooms, some of which are older than others as they weren't all renovated at the same time. The 5 junior suites have a small sitting room and have been fitted with classic style furnishings. The standard rooms are equipped with a television (and some even have international channels), a desk, a place to store luggage, a safe, a fridge (in most of them) and a hair-dryer (also in most of them). There are no beauty products in the bathrooms but soap and shampoo dispensers are at your disposal. 90% of the rooms have views of the city, looking out over the Carrera de San Jerónimo main road, Plaza de Canalejas, and Arbalán and de Sevilla streets. The guest rooms on the first 6 floors are rather modern. Their style is slightly different, with their light wood furnishings giving them an ambiance that is both warm and inviting. These modern rooms are furnished with a large bed and a plasma-screen television. The rest of the rooms are also quite spacious, but looking at their furnishings and general style, it is obvious that they are a bit older.
    • This is a traditional establishment, as the building now used as the Asturias hotel has always been used as lodgings, right from its construction at the beginning of the 20th Century. The old establishment was called Príncipe de Asturias but then lost its 'prince'-ly title ('príncipe', in Spanish), and was even called Bilbaíno y Rhin for some time. The Asturias has 6 storeys. All of the communal areas are to be found on the ground and first floors, while the rest share the guest rooms. The communal areas include the Don Pelayo bar, the restaurant, and the entrance hall, which itself includes the reception and a small sitting room equipped with a computer connected to the Internet (for which guests must pay extra). Beyond this area is the bar, where you will find several vending machines at your disposal selling sweets and drinks. There is a certain touch of romanticism in the reception area, thanks to its traditional little key boxes on the wall. Other decorative touches and furnishings also bring to mind trends from the 1970s, although these don't necessarily evoke any romanticism. The passage of time can really be seen in the floors, the doors, the stairs, and other objects on display.
    • Found on the 1st floor, the hotel's restaurant serves all 3 meals of the day and is also open to the general public. Several menus are displayed at the entrance to the hotel, showing the prices and dish of the day. Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 11:00am, lunch from 1:00pm to 3:40pm, and dinner from 8:30pm to 10:30pm. The dining room is both spacious and bright, thanks to the bay windows that cover most of the front of the building and that also offer views over Plaza de Canalejas. Boasting a Castilian style, the restaurant is furnished with wooden tables and chairs. As for decor, you will notice large shields as well as a photo of the Cuban musical group, La Vieja Trova Santiaguera, who once stayed at the hotel. The continental-style breakfast offers cheese and cooked ham and is served directly at your table. As for the lunch menu, there is a choice between 7 starters, 7 main dishes, as well as a choice of deserts and drinks, all for £12.50. Dinner is just as varied but a bit more expensive, at just over £14. Plus, you can taste some special traditional dishes like Paella for just over £22 with drinks included.
    • The Asturias hotel is planning on entirely renovating its facilities in order to move up to a 4 star category. Indeed, all of the hotels in the Corporación Hispano Hotelera group, to which the Asturias belongs, boast 4 stars. This group accounts for several hotels and restaurants in the centre of Madrid. The new hotel, which should be ready in 2012, is set to have a terrace boasting magnificent views over Plaza de Canalejas and the heart of Madrid. Following this renovation, the establishment plans to take back its original name, the Principe de Asturies hotel, and increase the number of its guest rooms to 220. This will be possible thanks to acquisition by the owners of the neighbouring building, which will become an integral part of the hotel. The clientele is mostly made up of tourists, including groups of adults and children, from both Spain and elsewhere, in particular Italy and England. Guests must pay to use the Wi-Fi connection right throughout the establishment and none of the rooms have been adapted for guests with reduced mobility.

The Hotel De las Letras stands at the heart of the famous Gran Vía and is a modern establishment with a Bohemian ambience. Having opened in 2005, it offers functional yet welcoming guest rooms, each with its own particular charm as dictated by the literary quotation found on the headboard. The hotel hosts a large number of cultural events and hardly a day goes by when you won't come across some famous actor or writer about the place. The cuisine here is modern and varied, but one of the defining features of the hotel is its rooftop, which becomes a delightful mirador overlooking the city during the spring and summer months - perfect for relaxing with an aperitif in very smart surroundings.
