This charming three-star hotel is close to the Calle Preciados, one of the busiest shopping streets in Madrid and even in Spain, as well as some of the city's major attractions, including the Puerta del Sol and the Gran Vía. Part of the appeal of this hotel, which has fewer than 70 guest rooms, lies in the level of comfort it provides, the elegant reading lounge and the restaurant, which is, in fact, only open for breakfast. The guest rooms are all more or less identical, with the exception of a few that also come with their own terrace.

    Location 9.41 /10

Tucked away on a street running perpendicular to the Calle Preciados, the hotel boasts a prime location on one of the country's busiest streets, home to a plethora of shops. This street also connects two of the city's most important landmarks, namely the famous Puerta del Sol and the Gran Vía, a symbolic century-old thoroughfare where you'll find plenty to do when it comes to culture, gastronomy and entertainment. It is also home to a large number of cinemas and theatres, which is why it is known as Madrid's answer to Broadway. The Royal Palace and the Plaza de España, meanwhile, are just some of the places of interest within easy walking distance of the hotel. When it comes to getting around, you'll find you have everything within easy reach, including taxi ranks and bus-stops, not to mention various metro stations (Sol, from where you can hop on the city's suburban rail network, Callao and Gran Vía). Barajas airport, meanwhile, is approximately 10 and a half miles from the hotel.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The hotel has a total of 67 guest rooms, including singles, doubles, triples and family rooms. In terms of category, all rooms are Standard, other than the 8% that also come with their own terrace. There are, in fact, seven rooms on the first floor, nine of the fifth and 17 rooms on each of the second, third and fourth floors. All rooms come with a mini-bar, a safe (requiring a deposit), a flat-screen television, a desk, a luggage stand, a make-up mirror, a hair-dryer and a bathtub with a shower screen. In terms of decor, the rooms are rather traditional in style and have carpeted floors. You may notice that some of the wardrobes look rather old whilst their inside looks a lot newer. Thirty or so of the guest rooms overlook the hotel's inner courtyard whilst the remainder overlook the pedestrianised street outside.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The hotel is housed in a five-storey building with a pale pink façade which incorporates a series of elegant balconies and a sign bearing the name of the hotel. The ground floor of the building actually houses a clothing boutique. There aren't that many communal areas at the hotel, but those present are noteworthy for their traditional yet sophisticated style. The hotel lobby is rather small but is adorned with a suit of armour and its ceiling is decorated with a plant-style fresco. Other communal areas include the computer room, the restaurant where breakfast is served, the relaxation lounge and the bar. Being a listed building, the architecture still features some of its original detail, such as the stained glass windows produced at Maumejean's Madrid home. When it comes to decor, you'll notice, too, the elegant classic-style rugs and lights. The hotel opened as the Hotel Barcelona in 1949 and has been part of the Best Western group since the early 90s. The building itself dates back to 1904 and was originally a family residence. Renovation work is regularly carried out at the hotel, the largest changes having taken place in 1996. The second and fifth floors were renovated in 2005.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The Best Western Carlos V does have a restaurant but it only opens for breakfast. Breakfast itself consists of a buffet consisting of hot dishes, cold cuts of pork, fruit juices, fruit and Viennese pastries. The breakfast buffet is served from 7:30am to 11:00am in a large lounge area adjacent to the relaxation lounge and cafeteria, which serves a selection of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and tapas-type dishes, among other things, until 11:00pm. Room service is available during the same hours should you wish to have a snack brought up to your room. You might be interested to know that 'happy hour' in the cafeteria is between 5:00pm and 7:00pm, with two drinks for the price of one.

    To know

The hotel is a member of the Best Western group, which means you can count on certain services here, including free Wi-Fi, a kettle in your room (along with complimentary tea and coffee to welcome you to the hotel) and an iron (if you don't find these in your room when you arrive don't hesitate to ask for them at reception, where they will be provided free of charge). A computer with Internet connection, webcam and microphone, as well as a printer, are also available for guests to use free of charge in a small separate room. The hotel has 17 guest rooms for smokers on the fourth floor as well as two rooms with disabled access. If you are travelling as a family you'll be pleased to know that cots can be provided free of charge and there is no supplement for children under 12 years of age sharing a room with their parents. The Family rooms can accommodate two adults and two children and a reduced breakfast rate is also available for those staying in these rooms. Wi-Fi access is free throughout the hotel. An airport shuttle service is available but there is a charge for using the service. In the relaxation lounge, you'll find a selection of complimentary press publications consisting largely of lifestyle magazines, as well as various board games. According to the former concierge staff, the ultra-famous Ava Gardner is said to have stayed at the Best Western Carlos V.
