    Location 8.76 /10

The Catalonia Gaudí stands on Madrid's famous century-old avenue, the Gran Vía, one of the city's main thoroughfares where you'll find plenty to do when it comes to culture, gastronomy, and entertainment. It is also home to a large number of cinemas and theatres, which is why it is known as Madrid's equivalent to Broadway. There is a pharmacy and the famous Chicote Museum just opposite the hotel, whilst many of the city's other landmarks, including the Plaza de España, the Puerta del Sol, and even the Royal Palace, are also within easy walking distance. It is also very conveniently located in terms of public transport. There is a bus stop near the entrance where you can catch a bus to almost anywhere in the centre of Madrid. The closest metro stations, namely Gran Vía (lines 1 and 5), Sevilla (line 2), and Banco de España (line 2), are barely 200m away, as is the Sol metro station, from which you can hop on the city's suburban rail network. The hotel is approximately 10 and a half mi from Barajas airport.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel has a total of 185 guest rooms, including 1 suite, 4 junior suites, and the remainder standard rooms. All of them come with a television broadcasting international channels, a desk, a luggage stand, a safe (available to hire for around £1.80 a day), a minibar, a reading armchair, a hair-dryer, a make-up mirror, a bathtub with a shower curtain, and a selection of hospitality products. Elegant and fitted with parquet flooring, the functional rooms here are low-key and particularly noteworthy for their size and brightness. The decor, meanwhile, is predominantly made up of wood and shades of white and green, making for very warm surroundings. Depending on which room you have, you could be overlooking the Gran Vía, the Calle Caballero de Gracia, or the hotel's inner courtyard. The windows are double-glazed (some of the rooms still have their original stained-glass windows as well) so they are pretty well soundproofed. Those overlooking the Gran Vía, in fact, are triple-glazed. A total of 4 guest rooms have a terrace complete with garden furniture and 3 of the 4 junior suites have a terrace complete with a bathtub, hammocks, and a table and two chairs, all overlooking the Gran Vía - how about that for luxury!

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel occupies a lovely regionalist-style building, the work of architect Jerónimo Mathet dating back to 1918. Its carved stone façade is noteworthy for its symmetry and because of its majestic Talavera azulejo-tile frescoes and highly elaborate guardrails on the balconies. The Catalonia Gaudí opened in 1997 and has undergone occasional renovations ever since. The hotel actually consists of two separate buildings merged into one which still bears its listed original features, including some very elegant and attractive staircases with antique grills concealing the lift shafts. The hotel lobby is particularly bright thanks to the series of picture windows directly overlooking the Gran Vía. This area also houses the reception, a cafeteria, and various relaxation areas furnished with comfortable armchairs. Other facilities include a fully equipped gym and well-being room on the floor above the lobby, complete with a jacuzzi, two exercise bikes, two weight-lifting machines, two showers (one of which has hydromassage jets), a sauna, towels, and a refrigerator full of complimentary water bottles for its guests. The hotel boasts no fewer than 5 rooms for meetings and events, with a floor area of almost 300m².

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

One of the Catalonia Gaudí's strong points is its restaurant, La Pedrera, serving a comprehensive selection of rich, varied, and high-quality Mediterranean and marketplace cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The tables are laid up in a sophisticated fashion and arranged in 3 separate areas, one of which is reserved, and it's not uncommon to see business groups coming to lunch here. Breakfast is served as a buffet and consists of a comprehensive range of fresh fruit, fruit juices, cereals, Viennese pastries, hot dishes (some of which are prepared to order), etc. Lunch and dinner, meanwhile, are served à la carte, with a daily set menu option also available. The daily set menu will set you back around £11 and consists of a choice among 3 starters, 3 main courses, and 3 desserts. Of course, you could always go for the 'Express menu', which is more basic but also more economical, at around £7 excluding drinks. If you would prefer to dine à la carte, however, it's likely to set you back about £22 excluding drinks. The restaurant specialises in fish such as cod, meat such as Galician rib roast and pork chops with mint sauce, and desserts such as 'Tarte Indienne'. With regards to wine, you'll find some 25 or so national gems on the list, 30% of which are of the Penedès variety. The hotel also has a cafeteria serving a selection of drinks and snacks. Guests may choose to have any of the dishes on the cafeteria menu delivered to their room, with room service available until 11:00pm.

    To know

The Catalonia Gaudí is one of the few establishments on the Gran Vía to boast a gym and a well-being room and is also one of the few hotel's in the city centre with a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Even if you go for a standard room, you can upgrade on arrival should you so wish, at a cost of around £36 per day for a junior suite and £45 for a suite. You can also arrange a late checkout for an additional fee of around £27 for a 3:00pm departure and £36 for a 6:00pm departure. Wi-Fi access is free throughout the hotel. There is also a computer with an Internet connection for guests to use but there is an additional charge for this. The gym and well-being room is open from 10:00am to 10:00pm and entry is free for guests. If you're travelling as a family you'll be pleased to know that cots are graciously provided. This hotel belongs to a Catalan chain, which is why you'll find plenty of Catalan newspapers to have a flick through (provided you're familiar with the language!) and will find that the televisions broadcast the independent Catalan channel TV3.

The Hotel De las Letras stands at the heart of the famous Gran Vía and is a modern establishment with a Bohemian ambience. Having opened in 2005, it offers functional yet welcoming guest rooms, each with its own particular charm as dictated by the literary quotation found on the headboard. The hotel hosts a large number of cultural events and hardly a day goes by when you won't come across some famous actor or writer about the place. The cuisine here is modern and varied, but one of the defining features of the hotel is its rooftop, which becomes a delightful mirador overlooking the city during the spring and summer months - perfect for relaxing with an aperitif in very smart surroundings.
