The 4 star Catalonia Moratín occupies a charming building at the very heart of the lively Bohemian district of Las Letras, close to the Puerta del Sol where you'll find a plethora of services available. Having opened in 2002, the hotel offers some significant benefits, such as spacious, comfortable guest rooms, a high-quality breakfast, and attentive staff. The hotel also boasts an old courtyard, which has gracefully maintained its original style, as well as a stately staircase that you really should make the effort to climb, if only to relive the building's former glory.

    • To know

    • The hotel stands on the Calle Atocha, which links the Atocha train station to the centre of Madrid. The Catalonia Moratín is in fact barely 100m from the Puerta del Sol and close to some of the city's other major landmarks, including the Royal Palace, the Plaza Mayor, and the Prado Museum, not to mention the famous Häagen-Dazs Calderón theatre, just next door. The Las Letras and Latina districts are also just a stone's throw away and are both ideal for relaxing with a drink or sampling the local cuisine, either out on the terrace or in one of the many charming little restaurants. When it comes to getting around, once again, the hotel is ideally located, with a dozen or so bus stops and taxi ranks in the vicinity. The closest metro stations are Antón Martín, Tirso de Molina, and Sol, from which you can also hop on the city's suburban rail network. The hotel is just under 11 mi from Barajas airport.

    • The hotel has a total of 63 guest rooms, including 8 superiors, whilst the remainder belong to the standard category. The main difference between the rooms is that only the superiors come with their own little lounge area, which may be separate or part of the bedroom. Likewise, the superior rooms come with different amenities than those found in the standard ones, including a bathrobe, slippers, a kettle (with courtesy tea and coffee), and a more extensive range of hospitality products. They are also 15m² larger than the standard rooms. If you are lucky enough to be staying in one of these bigger rooms, you will also benefit from personalised treatment and get the opportunity to choose between 3 different types of pillows. These rooms are particularly suitable for families and companies looking to hold small meetings in a private setting. Whichever category you go for, your room at the Catalonia Moratín will be functional and provide warm, welcoming surroundings, complete with parquet flooring, a luggage stand, a desk, a safe, a bathroom with marble wash basin, a hair-dryer, and a make-up mirror. There are views of either the Calle Atocha or the inner courtyard, where you'll find the cafeteria terrace, and those on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors also have their own balcony.
    • The Catalonia Moratín opened in 2002 following a complete renovation of the building, which dates back to the early 19th century, whilst nevertheless maintaining its history. This renovation work was carried out by architect Jacinto Arqués. The building's courtyard, which maintains its original structure, was sometimes used for parking the carts and carriages belonging to the King of Portugal. Indeed, everything here points to the fact that the hotel once belonged to an aristocratic family. Following the Spanish Civil War, it became an arts and crafts school and later a legal practice, among many other things. Apart from the courtyard, the building also still incorporates the carriage entrance, now the hotel lobby, as well as an imposing wooden staircase with the charm of its glory days in tact. The hotel stands 5 storeys high, with attic rooms on the top floor and also has a basement level. You'll find little here in the way of facilities but you cannot deny the overwhelming charm of the place, due largely to the original features that have been preserved and the warm, welcoming ambience. Communal areas include the lobby, the inner courtyard (complete with a terrace and relaxing sofas), the cafeteria, the restaurant, the library, and the conference room, which can accommodate up to 50 people. The decor here is the work of the Catalonia Hoteles interior design team and is both functional and modern, in perfect harmony with the style of the building.
    • The hotel's restaurant is open only for breakfast, which is served as a buffet, although lunch and dinner can be arranged for groups who have made a booking in advance. The vast dining room is located on the basement level and is furnished with 20 or so tables and 2 buffet stations offering a huge variety of options to help you start your day on the right foot. The buffet itself consists of fruit juices, fresh fruit, cold cuts, cheese, Viennese pastries, bread, tarts, cereals, and a selection of hot dishes. Breakfast is priced at around £14 but is often available for just £8. The cafeteria in the courtyard is open from 10:00am to 11:00pm and serves a selection of drinks and snacks in addition to sandwiches and platters. Room service is available between the hours of 7:00am and 11:00pm. You'll find a large and varied selection of high quality eateries in the surrounding area as well.
    • The hotel is part of Catalan chain Catalonia, which is renowned for its luxury hotels, most of which are located in renovated historic buildings at the heart of their respective cities, as is the case of the Catalonia Moratín. At check-in you will be given the opportunity to upgrade your room for a charge of around £36 per night. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and if you don't have a computer with you, you'll be pleased to know that there is one on the ground floor for guests to use, though there is a charge for this. A selection of complimentary newspapers is also provided at various points throughout the building, such as the lobby and the restaurant. Three rooms have been specially designed for guests with reduced mobility. The Catalonia Moratín's usual clientele consists of both tourists and business travellers. It also attracts a number of actors and professionals from the world of theatre due to its proximity to the one nearby. If you are travelling as a family you might be pleased to know that there are two guest rooms here with adjoining doors and cots can be provided free of charge. This hotel belongs to a Catalan chain, which is why you'll find plenty of Catalan newspapers to have a flick through and notice that the televisions broadcast the independent Catalan channel TV3. All of the televisions in the guest rooms also broadcast a channel you usually have to pay for (Digital +). An in-room massage service, provided in partnership with an independent company, is also available and will set you back around £71 an hour.

In the very heart of Madrid, half-way between the Peurta del Sol, the Gran Via, the Neptune Fountain and Plaza Santa Ana, the Astuias hotel is a modest establishment with 175 guest rooms and a restaurant that offers a different menu every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Complete renovations are set to take place in 2011 or 2012, with the aim of obtaining a 4th star. Nevertheless, during our visit, a renovation of the various varieties of guest rooms was not part of the programme and, as it is, some of them are more modern than others.
