The 4 star El Coloso stands on a street running parallel to the Gran Vía and is just a stone's throw from the Plaza de España. The guest rooms here are comfortable and the hotel attracts a clientele of business travellers and tourists. The hotel will be happy to provide various complimentary services during your stay, but do bear in mind that there is no gym, sauna, or leisure area at the hotel. There is, however, a business centre on-site. As a little sidenote, you might be interested to know that the hotel is housed in the former home of famous architect Ventura Rodríguez, who designed the famous Cibeles Fountain, a true symbol of Madrid.

    Location 7.32 /10

The hotel stands on a quiet street that runs parallel to Madrid's symbolic hundred-year-old thoroughfare, the Gran Vía, where you'll find a plethora of leisure, gastronomic, and shopping opportunities. It is also home to a large number of cinemas and theatres, which is why it is known as Madrid's answer to Broadway. Just a stone's throw away from the hotel you'll find various tourist attractions that are simply not to be missed, including the Plaza de España, the Puerta del Sol, the Sabatini Gardens, the Temple of Debod, and even the Royal Palace. On the very street on which the hotel stands you'll notice there are many establishments aimed at the city's Asian populations, from supermarkets to restaurants. When it comes to transport you'll have everything within easy reach, including taxi ranks right outside the hotel, bus stops just a few metres away, and a metro station around 100m away (at the Plaza de España, lines 3 and 10). The other closest metro stations are Callao (lines 3 and 5) and Santo Domingo (line 2). Barajas airport, meanwhile, is approximately 11 mi from the hotel.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel has 133 guest rooms, most of which are Standard, though there are also eight Junior Suites that include a lounge area. The rooms are divided into two different sections of the hotel, each dating to different periods in the hotel's history. Unsurprisingly, some of the rooms appear more modern than others, though this is more noticeable in the corridors, as the furniture is identical in all of the rooms. Regardless though, they are all spacious, bright, and well-designed, with brown and red furniture, parquet flooring, and lovely fabrics making for truly inviting surroundings and a welcoming ambience. Amenities notably include a desk table, a reading chair, luggage storage, a flat-screen television, a minibar, a telephone-type hair-dryer, a selection of hospitality products, a pillow menu, and a bathtub with a shower screen. 30% of the rooms are smoking and around 20 or so have a balcony, with views of either the Calle Leganitos or the inner courtyard. All of them have double-glazed windows and 3 of them on the 5th floor also have a huge unfurnished terrace offering superb views across Madrid's city centre.

    Overview 7.00 /10

Formerly the Hotel Residencia El Coloso, the El Coloso opened in the late 60s and was renovated in 2008, its façade noticeable for the cleanliness of its beige, brown-veined marble. Made up of two 5 storey buildings joined into one, the hotel lobby is clad in wood and bathed in a huge halo of natural light. You'll find various relaxation areas furnished with sofas in this part of the hotel as well as complimentary newspapers. The lobby area is spread across various different levels (hence the little steps everywhere), where you'll find even more relaxation areas. Alongside reception you'll notice a large fresco on the wall depicting flowers and animals that you simply cannot miss! It was brought back from Latin America, stone by stone, at the request of the former owners.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The hotel has one restaurant where the buffet breakfast is served. The other meals of the day are provided for groups only. Breakfast itself is served from 7:30am to 11:00am and consists of fruit juices, fruit, Viennese pastries, cold cuts, churros, pastries, 'pa amb tomàquet' (Catalan bread), yogurt, etc. as well as various hot dishes, some of which, like the fried eggs, are prepared to order. The U-shaped restaurant is located just below reception in a pretty, discreet little spot. Lunch and dinner are provided by a caterer originally from Segovia and the set menus available vary from around £10.70 to £40. In addition to the restaurant at the El Coloso, room service is available until midnight and the hotel also has an external catering company, A la Carta, so guests can choose from 12 different types of cuisine (Spanish, Mexican, vegetarian, etc.). Last but not least, there is also a cafeteria here, open from 11:30am until 10:30pm and serving a selection of drinks and snacks.

    To know

The hotel has belonged to the Hotusa (Eurostars) Group since 2000. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. If you don't have your own computer you can use one of those provided next to reception, offering a free Internet connection and use of the printer. The clientele at El Coloso varies depending on what day of the week it is; from Monday to Thursday you'll find primarily business travellers here whilst the weekends bring with them hordes of tourists and holidaymakers. None of the rooms at the hotel are adapted for guests with reduced mobility, and the entrance hall is riddled with steps! The hotel can, however, make arrangements for ramp access to any part of the building. There is also a business centre here, named after the hotel, where you'll find various lounges suitable for holding meetings and events, as it can accommodate up to 200 people. Ventura Rodríguez, famous royal architect and great designer of Madrid's City Hall, lived and died here, before the building became a hotel. Pamplona Cathedral, the Cibeles Fountain, and the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace are just some of the works the artist can put his name to, not to mention having both a street and a metro station in Madrid named after him!

Part of the appeal of this hotel, which has fewer than 70 guest rooms, lies in the level of comfort it provides, the elegant reading lounge and the restaurant, which is, in fact, only open for breakfast.
