The Gran Meliá Fénix has been famous for many years for its status as the hotel where The Beatles stayed in Madrid. Once part of the Tryp hotel brand, it is today the benchmark of the Sol Meliá chain in the Spanish capital. It is a luxurious establishment occupying a privileged location at the heart of the city, and offers rooms that are both comfortable and stylish, and incorporate the very latest technological features. You are sure to be won over by the presence of a jacuzzi in some of the guest rooms, and the views over Plaza de Colón.

    Location 4.18 /10

The Gran Meliá Fénix is located on Plaza de Colón, which is crossed by Paseo de la Castellana. This is a great geographical location for a hotel, a mere stone's throw from 'Milla de Oro de Madrid', an exclusive shopping district. Practically everything you need is within easy reach: the shops (all sorts of brands can be found within a small area), restaurants (including the Hard Rock Café), leisure facilities (wax museum, Fernán Gómez theatre, the archaeological museum) and, of course, the public transport. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to getting around town, with the metro (Colón, line 4), the suburban train (Recoletos), buses (dozens of routes stop close to the hotel) and the taxi rank just next to the hotel. Some of the interesting sites located less than 10 minutes from the establishment which you might wish to visit are Buen Retiro Park, the 'Art Triangle' formed by the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofía museums, and the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Barajas airport is about 7 mi from the hotel.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

From the rooms of the Gran Meliá Fénix, you can enjoy views over the streets of Calle de Hermosilla and Calle de Marqués de Zurgena, Paseo de la Castellana and Plaza de Colón. The rooms are split into two classes ('rooms' and 'rooms with Royal Service'), which in turn divide into several categories. In the former class, you can choose between the Deluxe, Premium and Supreme categories. The Deluxe category is the most common type, and consists of a spacious room provided with Etro hospitality products, a hair-dryer, a set of bathroom scales, a bathrobe, a make-up mirror, a trouser press, a pillow menu (there are about 10 to choose from) and amenities boasting the latest modern technologies like a 42-inch plasma-screen television broadcasting about 60 channels, a DVD player, a touch-screen controller to adjust the lighting and temperature, a voicemail machine in four languages (Spanish, English, French and German), and a charger for appliances like iPods. You will also have access to an express laundry service and a shoe-cleaning service, which is free of charge. You are sure to be impressed by the comfortable beds and their canopy and designer lamps, and the desk with its finely worked wood and leather chair. Meanwhile, the superior rooms are more spacious (some also have a lounge area) and come with more services, for example Clarins hospitality products, a perfume menu (orange cinnamon, sandalwood vanilla, etc.), the option of having coffee served in your room, a CD and DVD menu (about forty different titles can be chosen from, free of charge) and a personal butler service.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The hotel opened in 1953, and completely renovated all its facilities in 2001. It is located in a Neoclassical-style building, and can easily be seen from Plaza de Colón, thanks to its height and magnificent appearance. Its entrance is located in a peaceful street called Calle de Hermosilla, where a friendly bellboy will help you with any requests you may have. Once inside, the scene is set by the elegant little stairway and two lounges, which are rather like rooms you might see in a little palace. The reception area is located to each side of the door, along with the space reserved for personalised services for clients. Both lounges exude a sophisticated and completely charming atmosphere thanks to their majestic sofas, dazzling lamps and refined features. The decor in the end lounge features an impressive Onyx marble table and four rugs hung vertically to represent a kind of allegory of the four seasons. On the same floor is the breakfast room and Bar Dry, whose completely innovative feel contrasts with the classic style characterising the rest of the hotel. You can access the pretty terrace from the bar and one of the lounges.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The hotel has an à la carte restaurant and a breakfast room. Every morning, a complete buffet is served there, including fruit, cold cuts of pork, cereals, fruit juices (including fresh orange juice), hot dishes (prepared to order), and so on. Everything on offer is good quality. The room is spacious and furnished with functional furniture, with seating for about 40 guests. It is located on the ground floor and connects to one of the lounges and the other restaurant. The latter is called Epoque and is overseen by chef Miguel Martín. The dishes on offer feature Mediterranean and international cuisine available à la carte. It is a classic and stylish setting with a welcoming ambience. This dining room can be accessed from the street, which means it also attracts diners who are not guests at the hotel. It can seat up to 90 diners at a given time.

    To know

The Gran Meliá Fénix is one of the big hotels owned by the Spanish hotel chain, Sol Meliá, and it also happens to be the pick of the luxury hotels in Madrid. For many years, it was synonymous with The Beatles, because during the Liverpool band's single visit to Spain in July 1965, this was the hotel in which they stayed. In commemoration of their visit, one of the lounges displays objects linked to the band, which remains today one of the best musical ensembles of all time. Heads of state, artists and dozens of other celebrities have also stayed at the hotel. Some of the famous names to have graced the establishment include the actors Gregory Peck (who actually attended the opening), Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth and Cary Grant. The Beckham family also stayed here when David Beckham was plying his trade as a footballer in Madrid. Generally, the hotel welcomes guests of high rank and status. From Monday to Friday, the rooms are mainly taken up by international leaders (the United Statues, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico), and on the weekends it fills with guests with more leisurely pursuits in mind. The Gran Meliá Fénix belonged to the Tryp brand for several decades, and was awarded its fifth star in 2004. Ten of the guest rooms have a jacuzzi installed on the terrace, from which you can enjoy an exceptional view over Plaza de Colón, a space that often plays host to events and processions. The gym is open 24 hours a day, and can be accessed free of charge by all guests. During our visit in January 2011, the hotel was preparing to renovate and expand several of its facilities, including the gym, the hairdressing salon, massage rooms and the 'Royal' floor, which provides personalised services for around thirty of the guest rooms. The so-called 'Royal Service' includes benefits like independent check-in on arrival, breakfast in a reserved area, a butler service, an express laundry service (for an additional fee), use of the business centre and free access to a bar serving coffee, refreshments and apéritifs from 1:00pm to 11:00pm.

The Hotel De las Letras stands at the heart of the famous Gran Vía and is a modern establishment with a Bohemian ambience. Having opened in 2005, it offers functional yet welcoming guest rooms, each with its own particular charm as dictated by the literary quotation found on the headboard. The hotel hosts a large number of cultural events and hardly a day goes by when you won't come across some famous actor or writer about the place. The cuisine here is modern and varied, but one of the defining features of the hotel is its rooftop, which becomes a delightful mirador overlooking the city during the spring and summer months - perfect for relaxing with an aperitif in very smart surroundings.
