This 4 star hotel between Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol, right at the heart of Madrid, is ideal for a holiday or a business trip to the Spanish capital. You won't need a car because most of the main sights can be found within walking distance. The facilities provided by the establishment include a good restaurant, a gym, a sauna, a business centre, and comfortable guest rooms. A large portion of the guests are Mexican, probably given that this is the same nationality as the owners.

    Location 1.0 /10

The Liabeny is located on Plaza del Carmen, at the city centre, mid-way between Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol. Much of the building offers views over the famous Calle del Carmen, a street full of shops, and particularly shoe sellers. This location is ideal because it means you can easily walk to the main sights Madrid has to offer, for example Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace, and Gran Vía. The latter is one of Madrid's legendary, age-old thoroughfares, and is lined with many restaurants, shops, and other distractions. It is also home to a large number of cinemas and theatres, which is why it is known as the Madrilean Broadway. In terms of transportation, everything is within easy reach. Taxi ranks and bus stops can be found no more than a few metres away, along with the metro stations of Callao (lines 3 and 5) and Gran Vía (lines 1 and 5). Also nearby, less than a 3 minute walk away, is Sol metro station, where you will not only find the metro but also the suburban train. Barajas airport is around 10 mi away.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

The hotel has around 200 guest rooms among which are 4 junior suites. The rest of the rooms are in the standard category and offer either double, triple, or quadruple accommodation. They are all equipped with a desk, a television (with international channels and free Digital+), a keyboard, a carpeted floor, a luggage rack, a free safe, a minibar, a hair-dryer, a make-up mirror, beauty products, and a bathtub with a shower screen. Depending on the location of your room in the hotel, you may have views over Calle de la Salud, Calle del Carmen, Plaza del Carmen, or an inner courtyard. Six of the guest rooms have been designed for people with reduced mobility, and smoking is permitted in 70 of the rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel is located in two buildings, one 7 storeys and the other 5. Its understated, stylish façade is distinctive, owing to the orderly layout of the guest room windows. The establishment has a number of facilities dedicated to leisure and exercise activities, including a free and fully equipped gym that is open from 7:00am until 11:00pm, a sauna, 4 function rooms with adjustable walls (total capacity 60 people) and a 5th separate meeting room (for 35 people), and a restaurant serving all 3 meals of the day, which is something of a rarity in hotels at the centre of Madrid. Guests can also make use of the business centre, which is equipped with 3 computers (charged at just under £3 for 30 minutes). The general feel of the hotel is one of sophistication and refinement. The decorative features are in the classic style, with walls of finely worked wood and works of art like watercolour paintings by the artist José Estellés. Yet in spite of the overall appearance of the hotel, some parts of it, including the cafe and guest rooms, have a more modern and functional appearance.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The Liabeny's restaurant is a sophisticated space adorned with crystal chandeliers and pretty vinyl features with geometric patterns in shades of beige and red, creating a warm ambience. It can seat up to 80 guests, and also has a small private room with seating for up to 14 diners. Breakfast is served as a buffet, and the selection of food and drinks on offer includes fruit juices, fruit, cereals, bread, and pastries, and hot dishes like fried eggs, which are prepared to order. It is open daily from 7:00am until 10:30am, and will set you back approximately £14. Lunch and dinner are served from 1:15pm to 4:00pm and from 8:30pm to 12:00am respectively. At both meals, you can choose to order either à la carte or opt for the daily menu, which has a selection of 3 starters, 3 main dishes, and 3 desserts for approximately £21, drinks included. The options on the menu include international cuisine, so you can try famous Spanish recipes like Asturian-style meat and bean stew, Madrid-style beef with vegetables, or roast lamb. The other catering options consist of a cafe and room service, which is available from 7:00am to 11:00pm.

    To know

The hotel's name, Liabeny, is a combination of the first names of the previous owners, Liadora and Benigno. Nowadays, the establishment belongs to a couple of Mexican entrepreneurs, which helps explain the high number of Mexicans that come to stay here, especially diplomats and politicians. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel, and you can also make use of the cable Internet connection for an additional fee. The hotel concierge service, which deserves a special mention for its high level of service, has a curious shop displaying and selling a nice collection of dolls and various other items in its own image. Most guests seem to end up leaving with one of these special souvenirs in their luggage. Apart from providing information concerning your stay, the staff here will help you with other practicalities like checking in your luggage for the airport or buying tickets to the opera or football match. The Liabeny has its own car park, which will set you back around £16. The hotel is also fitted with a connected operational defibrillator.

Part of the appeal of this hotel, which has fewer than 70 guest rooms, lies in the level of comfort it provides, the elegant reading lounge and the restaurant, which is, in fact, only open for breakfast. The guest rooms are all more or less identical, with the exception of a few that also come with their own terrace.
