With its eclectic style and eccentric atmosphere, the ME Madrid is one of the most avant-garde hotels in the Spanish capital. Belonging to the Sol Meliá chain, it serves a cosmopolitan clientele of business travellers and tourists. The establishment is located in downtown Madrid on one of the city's busiest squares, where you will find a number of nighttime entertainment venues and a rich variety of gastronomic offerings. Some of the hotel's highlights include guest rooms equipped with the latest technology, a musical atmosphere with tropical scents in each corner, a dynamic staff, and a wonderful rooftop terrace where you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city. The ME Madrid is reminiscent of a New York hotel, particularly because of the atmosphere found in its restaurant and the terrace, where the Gerber Group regularly organises VIP events.

    Location 9.37 /10

The ME Madrid is located on the Plaza de Santa Ana, one of Madrid's most lively squares, which is full of bars and restaurants and home to the Spanish Theatre. This quarter is known as Las Letras and is so named because it was popular with the great writers of the Golden Age, such as Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega, some of whom lived in the area. Nestled in the heart of the city, this neighbourhood is full of entertainment venues and is ideal for a drink or for partying. From here you can walk to other sights of interest, such as the Puerta del Sol, the Prado Museum, the Royal Theatre, or the Gran Vía. The nearest underground station is Sol (lines 1, 2 and 3), which provides direct links to the suburban trains (allow 10 minutes to get to the Atocha or the Nuevos Ministerios train stations). Madrid Barajas airport is about 10 mi away.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel has a total of 192 guest rooms, including 113 deluxe rooms. The latter overlook a courtyard, which somewhat reduces the amount of light they receive, compared to other rooms. They are also smaller in size, 20m², which is just about adequate, depending on the number of occupants. In the rooms, you will find a comfortable bed covered with quality linen sheets and feather pillows, a reading chair, a desk, a plasma-screen television, speakers with surround sound, a CD and DVD player, an iPod adapter, and USB ports. The bathroom, meanwhile, comes with a bathrobe and slippers (black), a large mirror with lights (dressing room-style), and Aveda beauty products. The next category consists of 50 supreme rooms. Compared to the deluxe ones, the main difference is their size (25m²) and also the views overlooking the stunning Plaza de Santa Ana or the neighbouring Plaza del Ángel. The top floor is called 'The level' because it includes several types of rooms (focus studio, urban suite, grand suite, tower suite) which offer additional amenities, such as a hydro-massage bathtub, a terrace, a lounge, a jacuzzi, etc. The tower suite measures 110m² and has two terraces providing 360° views of Madrid.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The ME Madrid opened its doors in October 2006 after a complete renovation of the famous Tryp Reina Victoria, better known as 'The Bullfighters Hotel'. Even today, the hotel is still known as the ME Madrid Reina Victoria. Originally opened in the 1920s, this iconic establishment was the preferred place of patronage of a great many famous bullfighters. Joselito and Luis Miguel Dominguín are just two examples of the dozens of these who donned their costumes in the hotel before travelling to the Las Ventas bullring. Renovation of the building was seen to by British architect Keith Hobbs of the United Designers studio. He restored the façade with a modernist style. From the Plaza de Santa Ana, you can admire the elegant exterior of the hotel with its many windows and lofty towers which crown the building. There are three different entrances, each of which leads to a different location: the first is the entrance to the hotel itself, the second leads to the restaurant, and the third directly to the terrace. The interior is essentially avant-garde with designer furniture and an eclectic look. The restaurant-lounge as well as reception are located on the ground floor, while the restaurant-lounge is on the rooftop. The other 6 floors are made up of the guest rooms and the gym (located on the first floor). Brightly lit, the lobby boasts a very modern design, with a reception that consists of several counters and is equipped with huge screens displaying hotel information. It is divided into three sections separated by shelves on which newspapers and magazines are placed for guests to read. Finally, the 400m² basement is dedicated to meetings and events.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

The hotel has a restaurant and a terrace, both of which have a lounge area. The restaurant, Midnight Rose, is the work of Rande Gerber, Cindy Crawford's husband. Rande and his brother, Scott, are the founders of the After Midnight Company, a company that creates spaces for hotel dining and entertainment. This venue offers avant-garde and fusion cuisine. The menu includes Spanish dishes, such as salmon with cucumber sorbet and Iberian acorn ham, and exotic recipes, such as sashimi salad topped with flying fish roe. On the top floor, the bar, 'The Penthouse', has a lounge area and a spectacular terrace, and also bears the Gerber name. The terrace is one of the prime venues in Madrid for hosting events, due to the quality of its restaurant and its location overlooking the rooftops and major monuments of Madrid. It is also the perfect place to sip a cocktail and admire the views from the railing, sprawled in one of the comfortable couches, or lying on a Balinese bed. To get there, take the lift located at street-level, which provides direct access.

    To know

This modern hotel belongs to the Sol Meliá group and was the first ME hotel to be opened by the Mallorcan hotel chain. The ME logo also includes other design hotels (in Barcelona and Cancun, among others), all of which guarantee a laidback and VIP atmosphere. This 4 star establishment actually has all the comforts of a 5 star hotel. For those arriving by car, the hotel has a private car park, but there is also a public car park located right outside the hotel. That being said, you should notify the hotel at least two days before your arrival, as the neighbourhood of Las Letras is pedestrian-only, and with cameras located in every corner, vehicles without a permit risk receiving a fine. Thus, notifying the hotel in advance might save you £61. The gym (also fitted with surveillance cameras) is located on the 1st floor. Open 24/7, it is equipped with cardio and weight training equipment and, of course, changing rooms. In addition, a massage room is on site, but massages have to be booked in advance and come at an additional cost. Do not look for a spa, sauna, or swimming pool, as you won't find any of these... However, these facilities are available in the large gym - the Metropolitan - located next to the hotel and can be accessed by hotel guests at a preferential rate. The attention to detail in making guests feel welcome is also synonymous with the Meliá brand. In this hotel, for example, you can enjoy a glass of wine as an aperitif. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building and exotic scents permeate each floor: the lobby emanates a pleasant scent of melon while the other floors exude raspberry, pineapple, and mango. Room service is available 24/7 and does not just serve cold dishes and sandwiches, but also more substantial fare. Also worthy of note is the 'Guest Relations' service; in addition to being numerous, the staff is properly trained and attentive to guests' needs. Each floor has its own ice machine. Finally, the entertainment usually consists of music mixed by a DJ.

The 4 star Catalonia Moratín occupies a charming building at the very heart of the lively Bohemian district of Las Letras, close to the Puerta del Sol where you'll find a plethora of services available. Having opened in 2002, the hotel offers some significant benefits, such as spacious, comfortable guest rooms, a high-quality breakfast, and attentive staff. The hotel also boasts an old courtyard, which has gracefully maintained its original style, as well as a stately staircase that you really should make the effort to climb, if only to relive the building's former glory.

In the very heart of Madrid, half-way between the Peurta del Sol, the Gran Via, the Neptune Fountain and Plaza Santa Ana, the Astuias hotel is a modest establishment with 175 guest rooms and a restaurant that offers a different menu every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Complete renovations are set to take place in 2011 or 2012, with the aim of obtaining a 4th star. Nevertheless, during our visit, a renovation of the various varieties of guest rooms was not part of the programme and, as it is, some of them are more modern than others.
