    Location 7.03 /10

The hotel has in one of the best locations in Madrid, on the traditional Plaza de Neptuno, one of the symbols of the city where fans meet up after a victory by the famous Spanish football club Atletico Madrid. The Prado Museum is situated right opposite the hotel and the Retiro Park and Puerta del Sol are less than five minutes' walk away. Other places in close proximity to the hotel and worth a visit are the Las Letras district, ideal for a drink or for partying; the Salamanca district, one of the most exclusive of Madrid home to the most chic ready-to-wear shops, and the district of los Austrias, full of great restaurants and many monuments. Just outside the hotel, a taxi rank and a multitude of buses will take you anywhere you want to go in the city. The closest underground stations to the hotel are Antón Martín (line 1, the closest stop is 600m from the hotel), Sevilla (line 2), Atocha (line 1) and Sol (lines 1, 2 and 3). The Atocha train station is just under 1 mi from hotel, while Barajas Airport is just over 7 mi away.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel has 114 rooms of which the majority are in the standard category. The remaining rooms are divided into eight superior rooms, four premium rooms and one presidential suite. Bright and spacious, the comfortable beds and carpets fit for royalty add to the comfort of your stay. The colour schemes of the rooms are quite varied. In general, the bed linen and curtains are in light colours while the carpets are in tones of red, green, blue or yellow. Similarly, the floral motif of the carpets is usually reflected on the walls and there is a large mirror, making the rooms seem all the more spacious. The rooms are characterised by high ceilings and good soundproofing. The bathrooms are fitted out in marble, and are equipped with a hair-dryer, a set of scales and a make-up mirror. Only five of the bathrooms have a Jacuzzi: the four premium rooms and the suite.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The hotel opened in 2008 following the renovation of the former Gran Hotel Canarias by the NH hotel chain. This building was constructed in the first quarter of the twentieth century by Spanish architect Antonio Palacios Ramos, who also designed other buildings in Madrid such as the mythical Palacio de Comunicaciones and the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Its style is traditional, half-way between neo-baroque and expressionism, denoted by the deep red of its bricks. It really stands out for its elegant, classical clock tower surrounded by columns. For years, this building was the residence of Count Gabino Bugallal. The NH Paseo del Prado has seven floors. On the ground floor, the reception is located in the old carriage entrance. It extends into a lovely lounge that is distinguished by its classical decor and a grand staircase leading to the basement. One of the hotel's restaurants, along with a second lounge and a space with a computer with Internet connection, is also located on the ground floor. The meeting rooms and a second restaurant are located in the basement while the guest rooms are located on the other floors. In a classical style, the decor offers a sophisticated atmosphere with its Greek-style sculptures and beautiful stained glass windows and carpets.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The hotel has two restaurants: the first, 'Estado Puro', is an avant-garde space that bears the mark of the chef Paco Roncero. It is an ideal location for a before or after dinner drink. With a bold, gypsy style, this place also has a terrace that is open all year round, offering wonderful views of the Plaza de Neptuno and the general buzz of activity in the neighbouring district of Prado. Since this is a tapas bar, it is not necessary to reserve a table. The place is decorated with small reeds on the ceiling and pretty bags of spices. It also has a greenhouse where some herbs are grown, including parsley. Here, you can sample traditional tapas with a modern twist: tripe, Madrid style, patatas bravas (cubes of crispy potatoes served with a spicy sauce), pickled anchovies etc. The restaurant also sells products by Roncero such as olive oil and cookery books. You can access the tapas bar directly from the hotel or the street. The second restaurant only serves breakfast in the form of a buffet. Lunch and dinner are only available for groups. Breakfast consists of a wide array of delicious foods such as fruits, fruit juices, pastries and hot dishes.

    To know

This large four-star hotel has a number of elements that are worthy of a five-star establishment, which include the comfort and elegance of its rooms. This is particularly appreciated given the fact that the hotel is situated next to two others which are among the most expensive in the city: the iconic, luxury Ritz and Westin Palace hotels. Nevertheless, the room rates at the NH Paseo del Prado are in keeping with its four-star category. The hotel has a number of details that you will not find in any other establishment: the carpets and rugs are hand-made in the famous Real Fábrica de Tapices (Royal Carpet Factory), the bathrooms are decorated in chic Indian marble and the solid doors are made from authentic Canarian wood. In 2011, the hotel plans to open a modern gym in the tower of the building which will allow guests to work out while enjoying idyllic views of the Plaza de Neptuno and the Paseo del Prado. In addition, the number of superior rooms will be increased by 20%; these rooms have the added advantage of views of the Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo (Neptuno) and some additional services such as a coffee maker, bathrobe, slippers and a Hi-Fi system. The clientele varies depending on the day of the week; from Monday to Thursday you'll find primarily business travellers whilst tourists and holidaymakers stay here on weekends. If you're travelling as a family, you may be interested to know that cots or additional beds (on request) and connecting rooms are available.
