The Petit Palace Alcala Torre is a small luxury establishment offering excellent service, starting with a computer and free internet access in all the rooms. Housed in an old 1920's building reminiscent of a Chicago sky-scraper, the hotel enjoys an ideal location a stone's throw away from the Puerta del Sol and the Gran Via, right in the centre of Madrid. Revamped to combine 'old-style' with more cutting edge styles, this trendy hotel has a panoramic restaurant with fine views of Madrid.

    Location 9.0 /10

In Calle Virgen de los Peligros, a stone's throw away from Calle de Alcana, not far from the Gran Via and the Puerta del Sol in the heart of Madrid. The nearest underground station is Sevilla. Madrid Barajas airport is 8 mi away, and 25 minutes should be allowed for transfers.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The rooms of the Petit Palace Alcala Torre are modern and ultra-stylish, but remain functional. The designer light fittings (a lamp shaped like an orange mushroom), the playful use of lighting, an orange armchair, even the bin which looks like an orange leather bag; it all makes for impressive original decor quite removed from what you classically see. Another original touch is that each room has a computer with free internet access: a sacred plus! Sporty types can even use an exercise bike (in the superior rooms)! The rooms are carpeted, and are decorated in subdued grey tones. They have an electronic safe, free to use with a credit card and big enough for you to stash your laptop. There is also a telephone, individual air conditioning, a flat-screen satellite television with 24 channels, a mini-bar and a desk.
The bathrooms are just as stylish as the bedrooms. The washbasin, fitted with a right-angle tap, is outside the bathroom. There is no bath but the shower is truly amazing! It is big and functional, and has hydro-massage jets. You can use it either as a flexible hose or fix it, like a tropical shower, and the temperature is easily adjustable. There is a toilet, a professional hair-dryer, a magnifying mirror and a whole host of hospitality products, tissue papers, slippers, bathrobes, a shaving and toothbrush kit, eau de toilette, make-up remover, a comb, cotton buds - in short you can leave your wash bag at home!

    Overview 7.70 /10

Located in a 16-floor building that looks like a Chicago skyscraper, the Petit Palace Alcala Torre can be seen from afar! It looks like a Gothic building straight out of Batman's Gotham City! Built in 1920, the building has 59 rooms accessible by two lifts which are rather lacking in charm (they are not unlike the lifts found in the operating blocks of hospitals). The establishment is a member of the Madrid High Tech Hoteles Group and was launched in 2006.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

Breakfast is the only meal on offer, served from 7:30 am to 10:30 am (and up to 11:00 am on the weekend), but the food is excellent. It is served in a stylish setting, in a room with a big plasma screen on the 5th floor of the building which allows you to admire a fine view of Madrid. The room can accommodate 65 guests, and snacks are also available there from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Breakfast consists of fresh fruit juice, home-made pastries, cereals and the classics (bacon, omelette, sausages), cheese and ham; in short the buffet is varied and delicious. If it is not included in the price of the room, it will cost £13.20.

    To know

All the rooms have a computer with free internet access. The superior rooms also have an exercise bike. In the lobby, guests can help themselves to water, fruit juice and tea and coffee facilities free of charge from midday till 10:00 pm. You will be disappointed if you were hoping for a bath: there are only showers here, but the hydro-massage jets will make you want to stay in them for hours.

    Accommodation tip

Six of the rooms look inwards, and are quieter. For families, 14 family rooms 323 sq ft are available, with a king-sized bed for parents and a bunk bed for children. These two beds can be folded up against the wall to make more space. Located in the corners of the building, the eight superior rooms (High Tech) enjoy a better view and have an exercise bike. For families or groups of friends, you can also ask for room 1101, which is adjoining and which enjoys a fine panoramic view of Madrid because it is on one of the top floors of the building. Room 1201 is not bad either: it is a duplex on the top floor with superb views of the city and the surrounding mountains (snow-covered until April). You can reach the two upstairs rooms via two spiral staircases. It goes without saying that they are not recommended for the elderly or disabled.

The Régina is a small, unpretentious hotel ideally located at the heart of Madrid, near the Puerta del Sol Square. It is worth noting that it has a restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is rather unusual in small city hotels. An inexpensive hotel which makes an ideal base for exploring the main monuments and places of interest in Madrid.

In the very heart of Madrid, half-way between the Peurta del Sol, the Gran Via, the Neptune Fountain and Plaza Santa Ana, the Astuias hotel is a modest establishment with 175 guest rooms and a restaurant that offers a different menu every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Complete renovations are set to take place in 2011 or 2012, with the aim of obtaining a 4th star. Nevertheless, during our visit, a renovation of the various varieties of guest rooms was not part of the programme and, as it is, some of them are more modern than others.

The Hotel De las Letras stands at the heart of the famous Gran Vía and is a modern establishment with a Bohemian ambience. Having opened in 2005, it offers functional yet welcoming guest rooms, each with its own particular charm as dictated by the literary quotation found on the headboard. The hotel hosts a large number of cultural events and hardly a day goes by when you won't come across some famous actor or writer about the place. The cuisine here is modern and varied, but one of the defining features of the hotel is its rooftop, which becomes a delightful mirador overlooking the city during the spring and summer months - perfect for relaxing with an aperitif in very smart surroundings.
