    • To know

    • At the corner of Calle de Hortaleza and the Gran Via, a stone's throw from Chueca, the trendy gay district at the heart of Madrid. The nearest underground station is Gran Via. Madrid Barajas airport is 7 mi away, and 25 minutes should be allowed for transfers.

    • The rooms of the Petit Palace Ducal are modern and stylish, but remain functional. They are fitted with parquet flooring, and the subdued grey shades of the wallpaper are punctuated by black and white photos. They have an electronic safe, free to use with a credit card and big enough for you to stash your laptop. There is also a telephone, free wi-fi, individual air conditioning, a flat-screen satellite television with 25 channels, a mini-bar and a desk. The balconies have a beautiful view of the city.
The bathroom is just as stylish as the bedroom. There is no bath, but the shower is truly amazing! It is big and functional, with hydro massage jets and an easily adjustable temperature. There is also a toilet, a professional hair-dryer and hospitality products.
    • The 6-storey Petit Palace Ducal is a member of the Madrid "High Tech Hoteles" group, with 58 rooms distributed over a very handsome, historic building dating back to 1918. The rooms are reached by a lift constructed in 1934! It opened in 2003, originally as a youth hostel.
    • Breakfast is the only meal on offer, served from 7.30 am to 10.30 am (and up to 11.00 am at the weekend), but the food is excellent. It is taken in a modern setting, in a room equipped with a big plasma screen and decorated with black and white photos, on the ground floor of the building. The room can hold 32 guests. Breakfast consists of fresh fruit juice, home-made pastries, cereals, the cooked classics (bacon, omelette, sausages), cheese, and ham; in short, the buffet is varied and delicious. If it is not included in the price of the room, it will cost £10.50.
    • The Petit Palace Ducal is on the edge of Chueca, Madrid's trendy gay district, which is crammed full of tapas bars. There is a smoking area on the first floor for smokers. You will be disappointed if you were hoping for a bath: there are only showers here, but the hydro massage jets will make you want to stay inside for hours. There are two computers with free internet access in the business centre.

      Accommodation tip

Eight of the rooms have a terrace with a beautiful view of Madrid and the surrounding mountains (snow-covered until April). Twenty of the rooms have balconies, and the rest must make do with only a window. For families, 15 family rooms of 320 ft² are available, with a king-sized bed for parents and a bunk bed for children. These two beds can be folded up against the wall to make more space. The 7 superior rooms (High Tech) are installed in the corners of the building, from where they enjoy a better view and are equipped with a computer with free internet connection, as well as an exercise bike.

The Hotel De las Letras stands at the heart of the famous Gran Vía and is a modern establishment with a Bohemian ambience. Having opened in 2005, it offers functional yet welcoming guest rooms, each with its own particular charm as dictated by the literary quotation found on the headboard. The hotel hosts a large number of cultural events and hardly a day goes by when you won't come across some famous actor or writer about the place. The cuisine here is modern and varied, but one of the defining features of the hotel is its rooftop, which becomes a delightful mirador overlooking the city during the spring and summer months - perfect for relaxing with an aperitif in very smart surroundings.
