    • To know

    • On Calle Arenal, a stone's throw from the Puerta del Sol at the heart of Madrid. The Plaza Mayor is very close by. The nearest underground station is Sol. Madrid Barajas airport is 8 mi away, and 25 minutes should be allowed for transfers.

    • The rooms of the Petit Palace Puerta del Sol are modern and stylish, but remain functional. They are fitted with parquet flooring, and the subdued grey shades of the wallpaper are punctuated by black and white photos. They have an electronic safe, free to use with a credit card and big enough for you to stash your laptop in. A big rectangular mirror hangs above the bed. There is also a telephone, free wi-fi, individual air conditioning, a flat-screen satellite television with 50 channels, a mini-bar and a desk.
The bathroom is just as stylish as the bedroom. There is no bath but the shower is truly amazing! It is big and functional, with hydro massage jets and an easily adjustable temperature. There is also a toilet, a professional hair-dryer and hospitality products.
    • The 5-storey Petit Palace Puerta del Sol is a member of the Madrid "High Tech Hoteles" group, and was opened in 2004 with 64 rooms in a handsome, historic 19th Century building with a beautiful pastel red and white façade. The lobby is welcoming and friendly, with its stylish lounge equipped with a big plasma screen. Inside, you will marvel at the original wooden staircase, as well as the odd original red brick or exposed wooden beam in the walls.
    • Breakfast is the only meal on offer, served from 7.30 am to 10.30 am (and up to 11.00 am at the weekend), but the food is excellent. It is served in an original setting; an old renovated cellar whose white walls are decorated with black and white photos. Also on display is an original safe straight out of the Wild West! The two rooms can seat 25 guests. Breakfast consists of fresh fruit juice, home-made pastries, seasonal fruits, cereals, the cooked classics (bacon, omelette, sausages), cheese, and ham; in short, the buffet is varied and delicious. If it is not included in the price of the room, it will cost £10.50.
    • If a bath is a must when you go on holiday, you will be disappointed here, as the bathrooms only have showers, but their hydromassage jets will make you want to stay under them for hours on end. There are 2 computers with free Internet access in the business centre. Accommodation advice

A total of 15 family rooms measuring 30m² are available for families, with a king size bed for parents and a bunk bed for children. These 2 beds can be folded up against the wall to make more space. There are 3 family rooms with a big wooden terrace furnished with a table and 3 chairs, giving a fine view of Puerta del Sol to the left and the Opera and Palacio Real to the right. The showers emit a scent of mint and steam, and even have a UV option! The superior rooms (High Tech) enjoy a better view and are equipped with a computer with a free Internet connection, as well as an exercise bike. They also have bathrobes and slippers. Fifteen of the rooms look away from the street and are quieter.

This charming three-star hotel is close to the Calle Preciados, one of the busiest shopping streets in Madrid and even in Spain, as well as some of the city's major attractions, including the Puerta del Sol and the Gran Vía. Part of the appeal of this hotel, which has fewer than 70 guest rooms, lies in the level of comfort it provides, the elegant reading lounge and the restaurant, which is, in fact, only open for breakfast. The guest rooms are all more or less identical, with the exception of a few that also come with their own terrace.
