    Location 6.53 /10

On Plaza de la Lealtad where the famous Neptune fountain stands, just opposite the El Prado museum and a stone's throw away from the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum, the Reina Sofia Arts Centre and Retiro Park. The nearest underground station is Banco de Espana (line 2). Madrid-Barajas airport is 8 mi away and transfer time is around 25 minutes. Atocha station is a 5-minute walk away.

    Accommodation 9.45 /10

The bedrooms at the Ritz are of course sumptuous, spacious (322 sq ft) and stylishly decorated with a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, pretty paintings, beautiful wallpaper and elegant wooden furniture. The sophisticated decor even extends to the wooden detail over the bed. Cosy slippers are provided for your comfort, but it is also pleasant to walk barefoot on the soothingly thick carpet. Obviously the rooms are the height of comfort and provide all necessary facilities: individual and discrete air-conditioning, telephone, WiFi Internet access (payable and rather expensive), a mini-bar and a large, rather spacious electronic safe deposit box, big enough to hold a laptop. a flat-screen television with a DVD player broadcasts 52 channels. The radio plays relaxing background music. You are sure to sleep like a log in the cosy bed, given the quality of the mattress and the softness of the sheets: you'll never want to get up! Some of the rooms' balconies offer magnificent views of the El Prado museum.
The marble bathroom is spacious, very clean and dazzling, with gilded taps. It has a large bathtub with a gilded handle to match the taps, a separate tropical shower (with one tap for hot water and another for cold; it isn't always easy to adjust the temperature, so be careful not to burn yourself!), a magnifying mirror, tissues, a hair-dryer, a double sink, bathrobes, elaborate welcome products from the Bulgari cosmetics range, a set of weighing scales (which is very practical, as the extra kilos soon pile on in Madrid), and a separate toilet with a bidet and a radiator. All enhanced by attention to detail (bouquet of flowers and porcelain holder for your toothbrush). The hotel has many suites, each more beautiful than the last. The Royal Suite is a favourite of Yves Saint-Laurent.

    Overview 8.95 /10

A member of the Orient-Express Hotels chain since 2003, the Ritz Madrid is a true luxury hotel, as impressive from the inside as it is from the outside. The tone is set from the moment you enter the lobby: marble floor, sparkling chandelier, majestic carpeted staircase, columns, period furniture, a statue of Venus...welcome to the kingdom of elegance and sophistication. This splendid 6-storey Belle Epoque-style white building opened in 1910 by King Alphonse XIII is classified as a historical monument. It was created by the same architect as the Westin Palace that stands opposite it. A chic and elegant lift with its chandelier and its tapestry work leads up to the 167 bedrooms, 30 of which are suites. When the weather is nice, which is often in Madrid, it is pleasant to relax on the terrace or in the charming little flower garden, rocked by the gentle sound of the water running from the fountain. This is accessed via a majestic white marble staircase. A true oasis of tranquillity, this created garden with its pleasantly decorated pond and trees from the neighbouring botanical garden is home to an occupant well known to regular guests of the Ritz: Siba the owl, who frightens away the birds. When he is on holiday at the zoo, his scarecrow double replaces him and stops the birds from coming and pecking at your plate.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

The Goya restaurant provides a la carte service in the majestic surroundings of a magnificent dining room (chandeliers, tapestries, statues and beautiful paintings) which can accommodate up to 150 guests. At particularly busy times, the rooms adjoining the dining room are used. Do not miss the opportunity to sample the taster menu devised by Basque chef Jorge Gonzalez Carmona. When the weather is nice (which is often the case in Madrid) you can sit out on the terrace overlooking a charming garden. A truly delicious breakfast is served between 7.30am and 11.30am. The croissants are some of the best, the fruit juices fresh and squeezed as they should be, and the omelettes deliciously moist... Lunch is served between 1.30pm and 4.30pm, and dinner between 8.30pm and 11.30pm. The restaurant offers a wide selection of wines and alcoholic drinks. The Velazquez piano bar in the lobby serves numerous cocktails in elegant and sophisticated surroundings between 7am and 9pm to the sound of a pianist or harpist playing in the background.

    To know

Ladies will enjoy being pampered in the hair and beauty salon. Sporty guests can keep in shape in the superior fitness room, which is open 24 hours a day and has all the latest equipment such as bicycles with a small integrated television screen. It also has two massage booths and a small sauna (not big enough to lie down in but it is certainly better than nothing!). Guests may use all these facilities free of charge. A water jack and apples are provided for your comfort.
