Boasting its own personality, like all the establishments in this chain, the Room Mate Óscar is a hotel which takes its inspiration from the district in which it is located, that is, Chueca, Madrid's gay neighbourhood which is close to the emblematic Gran Vía avenue. The principal assets of this establishment include comfortable rooms equipped with good beds, a pleasant shower, avant-garde decoration and a complete but affordable breakfast. Of course, we should also mention the personalised welcome as well as the splendid rooftop terrace which affords beautiful views over the heart of the city. Here you can also go for a swim, enjoy a cocktail, or simply relax on a deckchair.

The Room Mate Óscar is in the very city centre, in the district of Chueca, just a few metres from the hundred-year-old Gran Vía avenue. This emblematic main thoroughfare
boasts a concentration of dining, shopping, and leisure opportunities, not to mention a large number of cinemas and theatres, which is why it is known as the Broadway of Madrid. Chueca, Madrid's gay district, is full of lively entertainment and a rather rich selection of eateries and leisure activities. Among the other tourist attractions within walking distance are Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace. When it comes to getting around, you'll find you have everything in easy reach, including taxi ranks, bus stops and the Callao (lines 3 and 1) and Gran Vía (lines 3 and 5) metro stations just a few metres away. Sol Metro station, where you can catch a suburban train, is just 5 minutes away and Barajas airport is approximately 11 mi from the hotel.
The hotel has 74 guest rooms in a number of different categories: 1 suite, 1 mini suite, 6 junior suites, 30 executive rooms, and the rest are standard rooms. White is the predominant colour, complemented by touches of bright blue, orange and fuchsia, which correspond with the colours of the floors. The furniture and amenities in the rooms include four pillows, an additional cover, a fitted carpet, magazines (Esquire, Bazaar), a desk, a luggage rack, a mini-bar, a safe (free to use), and a hair dryer (standard L-shape). Original and creating a warm ambiance, the decor also constitutes an important asset in these rooms. The standards have surprising vinyl wall coverings with black and white photos of men and women looking back over their shoulders, and a headboard composed of light bulbs covered by a huge pane of glass. The higher the category, the larger the surface area, with, in addition, a terrace and better views. Similarly, more beauty products are provided. However, guests staying in the standard rooms may also request more of these. Strictly speaking, the hotel does not offer any communicating rooms, although on each floor some of them share a small hallway that may prove to be a good option for families.
The establishment occupies a rationalist-style building which, before opening in 2007, held bank offices, and you will notice this avant-garde style as soon as you enter. You will be welcomed into a rectangular hall furnished with a long sofa surrounded by walls displaying messages of Sex and Love. At the far end you will find the reception counter where little details serve to make guests feel welcome and where you can also buy some products bearing the Room Mate brand name. The hall displays silver and black colours complemented by touches of pink and red all while benefiting from plenty of natural light which comes in through the huge glass entrance door. The building has a total of 7 storeys. On the ground floor you will find the entrance hall as well as the bar-lounge room. The first floor is home to the restaurant while the top floor boasts a terrace and a swimming pool. The remaining floors are reserved for the guest rooms. The rooftop terrace affords one of the most splendid views of Madrid's city centre and with a transparent balustrade, the panorama is quite vast. Here you will discover the swimming pool which functions like a private club and whose maximum capacity is limited to approximately 35 people. The hotel's interior design is the work of Tomás Alía. It is characterised by a mix of curves, colours and large images which result in giving the surroundings a modern feel that is both original and very warm.
The Óscar hotel is one of the rare Room Mate establishments to offer food services other than breakfast, which itself is served as a buffet from 7:30am to 12:00pm and as of 8:00am at the weekend. It consists of a wide range of products including sliced fruit, cooked meats, pastries, potato tortillas, cheeses, dried fruit, diet-conscious products (for diabetics and people with gluten allergies), as well as a daily special (a panini or a banana milkshake, for example). This breakfast will only cost you £5 while outside guests will have to pay £7.50. Black is the predominant colour in the breakfast room and can be seen on the ground and in the furnishings. Large picture windows offer not only pretty views but also plenty of natural light. For lunch, guests can either dine à la carte for approximately £25, enjoy a tasting menu for £33, or try the menu of the day for only £9. The Mediterranean cuisine includes dishes like risotto or oven-baked hake. The wine list is composed of about 30 different choices. At the bar, in addition to drinks and cocktails, you can enjoy options like salads or sandwiches at practically any time of the day. Between this bar and the entrance hall you will discover a lounge area, ideal for enjoying a cocktail at the end of the day. It is furnished with a counter, modern sofas and white stools, with lights of alternating colours creating a warm ambiance. In summer, don't forget about the terrace, where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks or sip on a beverage at some other point in the day. Pre-dinner drinks can also be enjoyed at the sushi bar on summer evenings.
This establishment is part of the Spanish chain, Room Mate, which has hotels located in the city centre designed to include all the services you would expect when staying with a friend. Hence the name Room Mate, followed by a first name for each hotel in the chain. For this one, Óscar is synonymous with cosmopolitan, nocturnal and modern. Among the characteristic elements of this chain managed by Enrique Sarasola, you will find a good bed and a pleasant shower, a decent breakfast at a reasonable price served until midday, and an avant-garde design. These establishments do not have a gym or any sport facilities, and there is no room service, but despite all that, the other services proposed offer good value for money. Also, rare are those, like the Óscar, which include a restaurant. The staff employed in these hotels constitutes another common point: in general, they are all young and friendly. At the Room Mate Óscar, you can count on the hallways and guest rooms being safe since guests need to have an authorisation to take the elevator, which means only they have access to the various floors. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Moreover, a computer with an Internet connection is also at your disposal for free beside reception. Also at reception you will notice that guests can help themselves to an apple, with that old saying posted: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Newspapers are provided for free in the entrance hall. Although the hotel does have a swimming pool, it operates like a private club and access to it is not included in the price of the room. Not to mention that you also have to make an advance booking to use it. One day at the pool will cost you £33, which covers the use of a towel, a locker and a mattress. If part of a group, you can take advantage of some quiet time beside the pool while comfortably lying on a pleasant Balinese bed. In addition, you can enjoy a massage in the comfort of your own room, like the famous 'Óscar', a massage described as "nocturnal" and "extroverted", for £90 per hour. The hotel does not have its own car park but there is a public one on the same square on which it stands. However, the hotel has an agreement with a nearby car park (29 via Libertad) which you can use for some £16 per day.
