Amy Adejokun Section editor

The famous Schweppes neon sign on the Gran Vía is part of the hotel's façade, one of the most iconic and most photographed buildings in Madrid. The Vincci Capitol is a luxury hotel with avant-garde guest rooms, two terraces with views over the city, and a spa where guests can enjoy the benefits of water in a warm and intimate atmosphere. Because of its location in the heart of the 'Broadway of Madrid', the interior design makes reference to the film world and one of the rooms has been designed as a tribute to the beverage brand displayed on the façade. This is a modern hotel that opened for the first time in 2007.

    Location 8.68 /10

Situated on the Plaza de Callao, the hotel is in the centre of Madrid's century-old iconic avenue, the Gran Vía, one of the city's main thoroughfares where many cultural activities are located: cinemas, theatres, and shops of all kinds, but especially fashion boutiques. The Gran Vía is in an ideal location to sit and watch the crowds passing through the centre of the city. Backing onto the hotel, the Capitol cinema often hosts film previews. A quick walk will take you from the hotel to the city's main sights of interest: Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España, and the Royal Palace, among others. In addition, the hotel is well served by public transport as the Callao underground station (lines 3 and 5) is located near the hotel. A few metres away, you will also find other underground stations such as Plaza de España, Sol (with several different lines and commuter trains), Santo Domingo and, of course, Gran Vía. The Vincci Capitol hotel is approximately 10 mi from Barajas airport.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel has 140 guest rooms: 2 junior suites, 2 skyline rooms (located behind the Schweppes sign), and the remaining ones are in the standard category. However, many of the standard rooms have a jacuzzi, a terrace, or are very spacious, so they are considered as superior standards. Whatever the category, they are all spacious and boast an avant-garde design and a warm atmosphere where guests can enjoy the many services offered during their stay. They are equipped with a large comfortable bed, free Internet access (cable), a flat-screen television (with a Pay TV service), a keyboard (surcharge), a safe (free), a pillow menu, an armchair, a desk, a luggage stand, and mood lighting with various settings (relaxing, welcome, reading, bath). As for the bathrooms, they include a make-up mirror, a hair-dryer, beauty products, and a bath with a shower screen. The rooms with a terrace are very large and the views are remarkable. The two 'skyline' rooms have the unusual feature of being located behind the legendary advertising sign on the Capitol's façade and are decorated with references to the beverage brand. For example, the carpet is in shades of grey with bubble motifs, the round bed is reminiscent of a bottle cap, and walls are painted yellow as a reference to the iconic colour of the Schweppes label. Aside from their size and the fact that they have a lounge area, the junior suites also have a private entrance that is accessed by a lift reserved for the guests of the suite. These suites also include beauty products by Hermès and Loewe. All of the rooms have magnificent views as most of them look out over the Gran Via or onto a side street (Jacometrezo). However, you should be aware that about 15 of the rooms overlook a large, bright, internal courtyard.

    Overview 8.45 /10

The building is named Carrión, or Capitol, in honour of its first owner (Enrique Carrión, Marquis of Nelina) and the nearby cinema. It is a true icon of the city. With 14 storeys, it is visible from much of the Gran Vía because of its height and the grandeur of its exterior. Built using stone and granite, it is an Art Deco building that was constructed in the 1930s by architects Luid Feduchi and Vicente Eced. It has a metal frame, including a beam 32m long (the longest at the time), and was one of the first buildings to benefit from reinforced concrete foundations and to include an air-conditioning system that was very advanced for the time. Classified as a listed building, many parts of the façade cannot be changed. However, when the Vincci chain took over ownership of this hotel (formerly the Tryp Capitol), it was almost completely renovated, opening its doors again in February 2007. The common areas include two charming terraces, located on the 7th and 9th floors. The terrace on the latter provides a nice vantage point from where you can admire the stunning views of the Gran Vía and much of Madrid. The terrace on the former has tables, chairs, and hammocks, making it an ideal place to soak up the sun or have a drink. It is for guests' use only and to order refreshments, just call room service using the telephone provided. We can't forget to mention the spa (Nammu Areas Spa), which has a maximum capacity of 4 people, guaranteeing a warm and private ambiance. Bear in mind that you should book it in advance. Nestled on the 3rd floor, it contains a Jacuzzi, steam room, ice fountain, sauna (with chromotherapy), contrast shower, minibar (included in the price), massage room, and other extras like towels and hammocks for relaxing. Expect to pay about £26 per person for a 1 hour session if you are a guest of the Vincci Capitol. Non-residents will pay around £35.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The hotel has a restaurant-cafeteria serving a breakfast buffet from 7:00am to 10:30am every morning. The buffet consists of a full array of foods to start off the day, including: fruit juices, fruit, pastries, hot food, dietary products, waffles, cold meats, salmon, cakes, cereals, and yoghurt, all for around £13. The buffet is arranged around the cafeteria counter, while the tables are set in a large, chic, avant-garde room in keeping with the style of the hotel. The entire restaurant benefits from plenty of natural light coming in through its large windows that boast a magnificent panoramic view of the Gran Vía. The cafeteria is open until 11:00pm on weekdays and 1:00am on Fridays and Saturdays. In addition to drinks, you can order appetisers, sandwiches, salads, pastas, cold cuts, and other snacks. You can also order food via room service, which is available during the same hours as the cafeteria. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner for groups and only with a booking. However, remember that the hotel is located in a neighbourhood that has plenty of restaurants to choose from.

    To know

This establishment is part of the Spanish Vincci hotel chain that is known for its avant-garde hotels, decorated using themes that make particular reference to their location. The Vincci Capitol is located in an interesting building that has become one of the most iconic of the city, due to its location (in one of the most popular streets of Madrid), its architecture, and the fact that it has featured in several films. One of these is "El día de la bestia" (The Day of the Beast), a recent film by director Álex de la Iglesia, in which the hotel features in a scene with Santiagio Segura. The famous sign, made up of 312 neon tubes, was installed in 1972. Since its inception, when it was still called Hotel Capitol, the establishment has made a point of offering contemporary and innovative facilities: it was notably one of the first hotels to install air-conditioning and to furnish its rooms with reclining beds. The decoration is clearly avant-garde and pays tribute to the worlds of cinema, architecture, and the Schweppes brand. Some of the decor elements include an old film camera, the framed original blueprint of the building, and a room decorated using the beverage brand as its theme. The type of clientele varies according to the day of the week: affluent business travellers stay here from Monday to Friday while holidaymakers take over on weekends. Three rooms have been specially designed for guests with reduced mobility and two of the floors are reserved for smokers. Free newspapers are available in the cafeteria.

This charming three-star hotel is close to the Calle Preciados, one of the busiest shopping streets in Madrid and even in Spain, as well as some of the city's major attractions, including the Puerta del Sol and the Gran Vía. Part of the appeal of this hotel, which has fewer than 70 guest rooms, lies in the level of comfort it provides, the elegant reading lounge and the restaurant, which is, in fact, only open for breakfast. The guest rooms are all more or less identical, with the exception of a few that also come with their own terrace.
