    Location 7.0 /10

Framissima Tryp Guadalmar benefits from an exceptional location, directly on the beachfront in the quiet residential district of Guadalmar, just 10 minutes from Malaga Airport and 2.5 miles from the city centre of the capital of the Costa del Sol. It is a two-minute drive from the main motorway that takes you to Ronda, Seville, Granada and Cordova, the four main tourist cities in Andalusia.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The guest rooms are spacious (30m²) and tastefully decorated: light marble floors, three framed paintings of a flower, yellow wallpaper, etc. The comfort and the quality of the amenities are top quality: large flat-screen television, individual air-conditioning, small digital safe (free), minibar fridge (water, soda and beers are included in the all-inclusive package), free Wi-Fi Internet access, two double beds with four pillows, a large mirror and desk, two armchairs, a small round table and a wooden suitcase stand with a cushion. The rooms also have a large balcony that overlooks the sea furnished with two white plastic chairs and a small table. The bathrooms are clean, sparkling, bright and nicely decorated with pretty designs, with a green plant to brighten up the charming setting. They are equipped with a bathtub (a little narrow) fitted with two handles and a flexible shower head, a make-up mirror, a toilet, a bidet, toiletries, a wall-mounted shower gel and shampoo dispenser, a hair-dryer, tissues, a telephone, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a shaving kit. In short, it is not a problem if you left your soap bag at home! The Premium rooms, on the 8th and top floor, also come with tea and coffee-making facilities, bathrobes and slippers. If you are holidaying with children, ask for one of the seven family rooms equipped with bunk beds.

    Overview 7.45 /10

The Framissima Tryp Guadalmar is part of the Hotel Tryp, the urban branch of the Spanish Melia hotel group, and takes its name from the residential district in which it is located. This charmless 8-storey building, with 146 guest rooms with a balcony and a sea view, was built in 1975. At the time, it was a 5-star hotel belonging to the American Holiday Inn hotel group. Christened Framissima in 2012, it was renovated in 2013, particularly the reception, which has been completely revamped. It is now an atrium under a skylight sporting modern furniture. Guests reach their rooms via the two spacious lifts, judiciously placed opposite the information board displaying the available activities. You can choose between two pools, one of which is a heated indoor pool, 1.8m deep and open from 10:00am to 9:00pm. Remember, swimming caps are mandatory. The second pool, 2.2m deep and open from 10:00am to 7:00pm, is quite big and surrounded by a garden. Blue deckchairs are scattered about on the lawn. Showers and straw parasols are provided, while towels are available at reception. Children have their own small circular pool, 14 inches deep. You can see the sea on the other side of the pedestrian promenade. The swimming pool snack bar is open from 11:00am to 7:00pm. Sport fans can practice their favourite sport on the multi-sports ground (tennis, volleyball, football, basketball), play badminton, boules, and ping pong, not to mention a large number of activities supervised by an entertainment team. The hotel also has a wellness centre with a massage room, a sauna, a hammam and a Jacuzzi (20 minutes maximum). Open from 10:00am to 9:30pm, the gym is spacious and fitted with the latest equipment. Lastly, the theatre with its Spanish feria-themed decor and in particular its wine barrel straight out of a bodega (Spanish wine bar) is lovely.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

The day gets off to a good start at the Framissima Tryp Guadalmar with a sumptuous breakfast, served from 7:30am to 10:30am. The percolator coffee is very good, the orange juice is freshly pressed, there are a variety of fruit juices (tomato, apple, peach, carrot), the bread is fresh, the croissants are just as good as in French bakeries, the pastries are homemade, the hot chocolate is authentic, and the list goes on: toast, cold meats, scrambled or fried eggs, omelettes with bacon or sausage, pancakes, cheese, in short, absolute bliss! The only slight drawback is that there is no terrace to sit on outside. Guests have to make do with the window that looks out onto the pool, the garden and the sea. Lunch is served from 12:30pm to 3:00pm and dinner from 7:30pm to 10:30pm, both in buffet form. Three theme evenings organised every week spice things up a bit: Andalusian, Mexican and Asian. The show cooking buffet is varied, generous and delicious, and the cheese, chilled beer and delicious homemade pastries are particularly good. The best coffee can be enjoyed at the Picasso Bar in the very modern lobby furnished with a large flat-screen television. Open from 10:30am to midnight, it has a nice terrace where guests can drink their midday coffee or a cocktail in the evening. Not forgetting the swimming pool snack bar, open from 11:00am to 7:00pm. You will also find two chiringuitos (fishing boats where fish is grilled) on the beach.

    Spa 7.2 /10

The hotel has a wellness center with massage room, sauna, steam room and hot tub (20 minutes maximum).

    Beach 6.70 /10

The beach is just on the other side of the pedestrian promenade. Like most of the beaches in the Costa del Sol, the sand is grey, so don't expect an idyllic beach. But then, most guests don't come here to laze around on the beach, they come for the cultural visits in the heart of Andalusia. The facilities (straw parasols and white plastic deckchairs) are charged extra. You will also find showers and two chiringuitos (beach bars) which are not part of the hotel but where you can enjoy fish freshly grilled on a colourful fishing boat. You can see the Guadalhorce river flowing into the sea, which marks the boundary with Malaga.

    To know

The beach may not be particularly beautiful, but guests at the Framissima Tryp Guadalmar don't come here for the seaside but rather for Andalusia's cultural wealth. Not only is it in a prime location facing the sea, which can be seen from all the guest rooms, it is also close to the airport and to Malaga, and near a motorway junction for easy access to Seville, Granada, Cordova and Ronda. Moreover, there is a free shuttle service from the hotel to Torremolinos for guests from mid-June to mid-September, depending on the schedule. You will thus have the opportunity to see the difference between the protected environment of the Tryp Guadalmar, isolated in its residential district, and the concrete coast of Torremolinos lined with charmless hotels piled up on top of each other! There is a taxi station and a bus stop in front of the hotel for transport to Malaga city centre. Free Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the hotel. Those who do not have a laptop can use one of the two in the lobby for ?9 (£7.50) per hour. Guests arriving by car can use the hotel's car park for free (whereas most car parks in the region are charged extra). One guest room is adapted for disabled guests. There are 3 meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 150 people. The hotel is open all year round but the Framissima's entertainment activities only run from April to November. Two-thirds of the guests who come here are French.

The Vincci Posada del Patio is a boutique hotel at the heart of Malaga and the only 5-star hotel in the capital of the Costa del Sol. Admittedly it's not on the seafront, but we did like the free Internet access, the rooftop swimming pool and the gourmet restaurant. History buffs will enjoy admiring the vestiges of the Roman and Arab eras that are visible under the hotel. It's just a pity that there's no spa.

The Vincci Malaga is a city hotel with a good location in Malaga: opposite the beach, and close to the city centre and the airport. Ideal for both business travellers and tourists. There is no swimming pool or spa, but the hotel's friendly size, free Internet access and restaurant are nice touches.

The Barcelo Malaga is a city hotel that is perfect for business travellers, ideally located directly opposite the train station (you can see the platform from the lobby window). It is a fair distance from the beach but we liked the free Internet access, the comfortable guest rooms and the ultra-modern lobby which actually has a slide!
