It is rare to find an establishment that manages to strike the right balance so well. Its solid facilities have maintained a certain intimacy, the decoration combines modernity and local charm, the added touches for families also leave room for couples, and there is enough to satisfy both sports and beach lovers. Overall, the facilities are surprisingly comprehensive and the quality is good. The Ikaros Beach is located near the Malia seaside resort.

    Location 4.53 /10

In Stalis in the Malia area, a busy seaside resort where young graduates come on holiday to make the most of the rows of bars and restaurants. The hotel is nevertheless set back from the hustle and bustle of the centre, and its (sometimes overflowing) energy won't disturb your stay. Allow 25 minutes travelling time from Heraklion International Airport, 40 minutes for an excursion to the archaeological site of Knossos and 25 minutes for a trip to the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. The easiest way to get around is to hire a car, or hop on the bus at the stop just 5 minutes from the hotel. Golf lovers can enjoy their favourite sport on the 18-hole Crète Golf Club, a 15-minute drive away.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

249 guest rooms spread across various one-storey buildings (maximum). Although we were completely won over by the hotel's facilities, the guest rooms left something to be desired: the decor is rather bland, and all the white (floor, walls, bedding) makes it feel rather cold. Tiled floors. Nonetheless, they are spacious (an average twenty or so m²) and fully equipped: individual air-conditioning, flat-screen television, tea and coffee-making facilities, a free safe and free Wi-Fi Internet access. The bathrooms are nicely laid out, with Pascal Morabito brand toiletries and bathtubs and showers in equal proportions. An extensive room service menu (omelettes, pasta, fish, meats etc.). Shame that the bedding is a little rough. Note that all of the guest rooms have a balcony, although you might have to make do with a view of your neighbour's balcony as the buildings are rather close together in some areas. Those who prefer a bit of exclusivity should opt for the 11 Suites facing the sea, which have their own little private swimming pools. Then there's the view. Accommodation advice:
    - Avoid the guest rooms overlooking the hotel entrance as buses regularly arrive to drop off and pick up groups.
    - If you are averse to darkness, make sure to avoid the guest rooms on the ground floor, as the buildings are closely grouped together blocking out most of the natural light.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Opened in 1971, the hotel has come a long way since, and its last complete renovation in 2008 has given a new contemporary sparkle to its interior areas. The contrast with its stone village-style exterior works well and gives it character: a local style with top-of-the-range trends. Let us be clear: the hotel is big and the accommodation is spread across a vast area along the shore. However, the architectural success of the establishment hinges on the feeling of intimacy that is maintained thanks to the attention paid to the landscape: charming exposed stone (omnipresent on both the floor and the walls), surprising groves, green tree-lined paths, grassy areas, and three swimming pools across the site (each with a different ambiance, whether it's aimed at children or couples). Facing the sea, the hotel is a comfortable retreat where you won't get bored: whether you're a fan of sport (three free-to-use tennis courts), well-being (a delightful and welcoming spa) or bathing (great beach). In addition: Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. A very large and air-conditioned kid's club for 4-12 year olds.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

Four restaurants including the main restaurant. An inspiring example! Direct access from reception, with a good location and layout: large dining room, high ceiling, and large glass windows to make the most of the sea view and the Cretan sunshine. Terrace and attentive service. Guests will be spoilt for choice at the buffet! The different stands vary the products and highlight creative cooking. A pasta zone with different types of pasta and various sauces (bolognese, cheddar etc.), fish (sweet and sour swordfish), boiled pork with vegetables, beef stroganoff, breaded chicken wings, Basmati rice with almonds and raisins, lamb and tomato tortillas, broccoli with parmesan and cream, etc. A theme for every evening. The cake tray is copious, and the same goes for the cheese. The Cretan zone is full of local recipes (green and black olive tapenade, salads, eggplant caviar). Breakfast follows along the same theme - hearty! (omelettes, pancakes, doughnuts, breakfast pastries, fresh fruit juice; etc.). There is a choice of three à la carte restaurants: Mediterranean cuisine (and a panoramic sea view), Asian cuisine, and a Cretan tavern - our favourite for its simplicity and its beach location facing the sea. There are three bars including the main bar, which is well furnished with armchairs and a flat-screen television.

Slightly set back from the main buildings, the spa is effective without being over the top (the air is not thick with 'relaxing' aromas, nor full of 'well-being' music). The staff are friendly, there is a cheerful atmosphere (pretty wooden materials) and surprisingly, the spa is on the upper floors, unlike most well-being centres which are often found on the basement level, preferring a sombre atmosphere. . In terms of treatments, the Aura spa is up to scratch. The list includes massages, body treatments (chocolate or black sand scrub, anti-cellulite treatment, etc.), facials, pedicures and manicures. A beauty salon and hairdressers is also on-site. One good point: access to the pretty little gym and the large indoor swimming pool with its glass windows facing the sea is free.

    Beach 8.20 /10

Right on the waterfront. The hotel has a superb beach with lots of equipment. The water is clear and the shore is free from rocks.

    To know

The hotel has two guest rooms for people with reduced mobility.
For wedding celebrations, head to the chapel!
Very light entertainment, and few activities for teenagers.
