With a name like Caribou, meaning 'welcome' in Shimaore, you would expect to made to feel right at home at this hotel... and you won't be disappointed! The Caribou opened in 1988 and has since been renovated and extended, and becoming something of an institution on the island. It now attracts both businessmen (and women!) and families passing though Mamoudzou, thanks to its two main selling points, namely its great city-centre location and the swimming pool nestled at the centre of the complex. It is also home to an independent restaurant and bakery which are popular with the locals all day long.

    Location 3.0 /10

The Caribou is ideally located in the city centre, just a few minutes' walk from the pontoon from which various boat trips and the barge linking Grande-Terre to the smaller island of Petite-Terre depart. The famous bar-restaurant of the same name, along with its bakery, are just a stone's throw from the entrance and, despite being independently-owned, are an integral part of the hotel. A little further along (a 2-minute walk away), you'll come across the road where most of the shops, bars and restaurants and also the famous market are located - the perfect place to soak up the Shimaore culture!

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The hotel has 43 guest rooms, including 7 suites (3 business and 4 junior), with the decor and type of furniture varying from one room to the next; whilst some rooms have parquet flooring and a flat-screen television, for example, others have tiled floors and a conventional television. Which of these you end up staying in will depend on your tastes and your budget, but rest assured that all have a refrigerator, a safe (free of charge), air-conditioning, satellite television, a telephone and a bathroom complete with shower, soap and sachets of shampoo. Some of the rooms have already been renovated whilst others are housed in the most recent part of the hotel, which was completed in 2000.

    Overview 7.55 /10

The lobby has something of an African ambience, decorated with lush green plants, tribal fabrics and wooden furniture; indeed, wood is a central theme throughout the hotel. Throughout its life, the various buildings which make up the complex have undergone many changes. The outdoor swimming pool, for example, which now sits nestled at the centre of the complex, used to be in the basement, and though it isn't the most spacious of areas, it serves its purpose as a place to cool off when the heat starts getting to you. The hotel completed its most recent stage of growth in 2000, but new plans are expected to be revealed in coming years.

    Food and drink 6.95 /10

The brochure informs us that the Caribou, far from being just a hotel, is also a patisserie, bakery and tea room all rolled into one, the latter remaining open from 6:00am to 7:00pm and serving a variety of pastries and warm breads every morning. Just like the neighbouring restaurant, it is completely independent of the hotel, but the hotel does have an agreement whereby guests can charge their purchase to their room. The breakfast included in the 'bed and breakfast' package is served poolside on a covered terrace between 6:00am and 10:00am, allowing guests to enjoy a buffet of pastries, fruit and eggs.

    To know

A member of the Blue Season Hotels chain, the Caribou is the only establishment on the island to have an official star-rating; it therefore comes as no surprise to see the two stars on proud display on the gold plaque at the entrance. In addition to the surrounding shops, the management has plans to build new accommodation units and shops here, though it is not yet known when the work is to begin. With regards to entertainment, the hotel does organise some activities, and a band performs on weekends.
