Are you an adventurer at heart? Could you be the next Indiana Jones? If the answer is yes to either of these, you're going to love the Club Med Rio das Pedras, nestled at the foot of tropical forest covered mountains and at the mouth of a river. This wonderful natural setting is home to 324 bungalows, two restaurants, a huge lagoon pool, a spa, a water-skiing centre, a comprehensive mini-club and many other sports facilities, not to mention the heavenly beach, complete with granite rocks, which is easily on a par with the Seychelles. This family-friendly village also caters for children of 2-18 years of age, making it an ideal destination for families, couples and sports enthusiasts alike.

    Location 8.0 /10

The club stands at the foot of the lush forest covered mountains, facing the sea and at the mouth of a river, close to the city of Mangaratiba, 31 mi north of Angra and some 75 mi southwest of Rio. Transfer time to the airport is around 1 hour and 45 minutes, though more privileged guests can arrive by helicopter.

    Accommodation 8.00 /10

The Club Med Rio das Pedras opened in 1989 and its guest rooms were majorly refurbished in 2010. The 324 guest rooms are housed in 13 two storey buildings without lifts, and are tucked away amid a sea of greenery. The whole resembles a village of tiled-roof houses. The spacious rooms are also tiled, pleasantly decorated and well equipped when it comes to amenities, which include a flat screen satellite television broadcasting a large selection of channels, a free electronic laptop safe, individual air conditioning, a refrigerator containing complimentary bottles of water, a direct telephone line and Wifi Internet access (for which there is a charge). It's a shame there are no balconies or terraces, particularly as the windows overlook either the gardens or the sea. The bathrooms, which are not separated from the bedroom area, are equipped with a tropical shower combined with a flexible head, a separate toilet, a hair dryer, hospitality products and a refrigerator.

    Overview 8.50 /10

With a name that translates as 'the river of the rocks', it's clear to see why the Club Med Rio das Pedras is so called. With a river, tropical forest covered mountains, and pink granite rocks, the area surrounding the complex of 324 Colonial-style bungalows housed in 13 two storey buildings (without lifts), is everything its name suggests. There's certainly no shortage of space here, but there can sometimes be quite a distance between the hotel's various facilities, notably between the guest rooms and the water-skiing dock and other sports facilities. Having said that, the walk is such a beautiful one, through the lush vegetation and along rivers with wooden bridges, that you'll hardly notice it. The lagoon style swimming pool, meanwhile, is well located close to the guest rooms, the reception and the main restaurant. Facing the sea, it is divided into three sections, one for activities (water volleyball, water polo, etc.), one for children, and one part spanning 25m, making it ideal for swimming lengths, though do bear in mind that the water in this section is 2.35m deep. Showers, deck chairs, white canvas parasols and towels are provided free of charge on the solarium terrace. Evening entertainment is provided in the 600-seater theatre and you're guaranteed to experience the authentic Brazilian atmosphere!

    Food and drink 8.50 /10

As usual, the cuisine is right up to scratch at Club Med and you'll find yourself really looking forward to meal times! With a huge buffet serving a very large choice of tasty dishes, you won't know where to start! Breakfast (which includes fresh fruit juices, boiled eggs, etc.) is served from 7:30am to 11:00am, lunch from 12:30pm to 3:00pm and dinner from 8:00pm to 10:00pm, with a different theme every night of the week. The 600-seater dining room is located upstairs and boasts beautiful views of the sea through its large picture windows. There are no tables for two here, as every effort is made to encourage guests to mingle, meaning that you'll find yourself seated at a large mixed table. If you'd like a little more privacy, your best bet is to book a table at the Jangada, the à la carte gourmet restaurant. The pool bar is open from 9:00am to 1:00am. It serves a selection of snacks from 3:30pm to 7:00pm and a few appetizers with pre-dinner drinks from 7:30pm.

    Beach 9.00 /10

With a 600m-long perfect beach in a heavenly setting, surrounded by mountains, lush forestland and pink granite rocks worthy of the Seychelles, there's certainly no shortage of space! The clear waters are perfect for bathing, before stretching out on one of the plastic deck chairs in the shade of a palm leaf parasol and admiring the various islands and islets of the archipelago of Angra dos Reis just opposite. There are also three hammocks on the lawn, set back a little from the beach, where you can enjoy a siesta as you sway in time with the waves. If you fancy something a little more active, why not get involved in a game of beach volleyball, try your hand at water-skiing off the wooden landing or take a kayak up the river, winding through the dense, lush vegetation, for a real adventure!

    To know

Those who like a little pampering will be sure to check out the gorgeous spa and its 5 massage rooms, tucked away amid the tropical vegetation with birds singing softly in the background. Sports enthusiasts will be pleased to learn there is a multi-purpose pitch where you can play basketball, volleyball, football or even handball, not forgetting 9 tennis courts, 3 of which are indoor, so you could even organise a Grand Slam tournament if you like! Whilst all this is going on, the children will be well looked after at the mini-club, which has its own swimming pool and offers various activities, including water polo, water volleyball, ping-pong and trampolines, among others. The hotel also has a conference centre that can accommodate up to 500 people. On a negative note, keep in mind that the river tends to encourage mosquitoes, particularly at night. The Club organises free water-skiing sessions from the wooden landing located at the far end of the complex, though the superb views from the landing itself are worth the trip alone! The Rio das Pedras is one of Club Med's two 'Eco Nature' villages, the other is Cherating in Malaysia.
