    Location 3.0 /10

The hotel is on the seafront in Marina di Ugento. Bari and Brindisi airports are 155 and 75 mi away respectively.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The Iberotel's 333 guest rooms are located on the ground and first floors of light-coloured Mediterranean-style buildings, and each one has either a balcony or a patio. There are 3 categories to choose from: standard double rooms measuring 24m², superior double rooms measuring 28m², and family rooms. The standard family rooms have a double bedroom, a child's bedroom, and a bathroom; the superior family rooms have a double bedroom, a child's bedroom, and two bathrooms; and the superior plus family rooms have a double bedroom, two children's bedrooms, and two bathrooms.

Whichever you decide to go for, you can be sure to find an inviting room decorated largely in pastel shades, with light-coloured wood matching the vibrant stripes and the blue and salmon pink pictures chosen to add colour to the very well-designed space.

It goes without saying that you will find all the usual amenities provided in a hotel room, such as a television, a telephone, a safe, and Internet access. We also noticed the odd little details that make all the difference and show how much emphasis the hotel puts on looking after its guests. Two of these were in the very stylish bathrooms in the form of a hanger in the shower for hanging your beach clothes to dry and the heated towel rack. Iberotel makes an effort to protect the environment: each room is therefore provided with containers to sort recyclable waste and instead of the standard energy-thirsty mini-bar, there is a water dispenser for each group of rooms. Also, all of the rooms come with a pitcher and two glasses to cut down on waste.

    Overview 8.70 /10

As proudly suggested by its name, the Iberotel Apulia is a hotel rather than a tourist village. We like to think of it as a resort that distinguishes itself from the stereotype of a family-friendly holiday village where the priority is to have fun without breaking the bank. It succeeds because of the good organisation and high quality that can be seen in the various spaces and the services on offer. Like a resort, the Iberotel offers an all-inclusive package deal in addition to a vast array of activities and facilities given over to relaxation, which means guests can find everything they need without ever having to leave the premises. At the same time, and typical of hotels, it pays constant attention to its guests, who benefit from discreet and cleverly conceived recreation designed to help achieve total relaxation.

After parking your car according to the instructions provided by the caretaker at the main gate, you will make your way to the lobby, a vast corridor leading to reception. Once you have checked in and have the famous bracelet safely wrapped around your wrist (assuming you have opted for the all-inclusive option), a little electric car will take you to your room, and given the way the premises are designed, some of the rooms are a bit of a drive away.

Having settled in, you might feel like exploring the rest of the resort. The area dedicated to sports facilities is located on the edge of the premises, but all the other communal spaces are at the centre of the complex, where there are low yellow walls bordering paved pathways and ancient olive trees dotting the grounds. Guests can make use of 3 fine swimming pools. One of these has slides and is reserved for children, another is very shallow and designed for very young children, while the adult pool is surrounded with carefully chosen deckchairs and parasols.

The hotel bar, open from morning till night, overlooks this space, where the entertainment team stages the evening shows that are mostly aimed at children. Guests who have checked in under the all-inclusive package can serve themselves as much as they want to the many drinks, snacks, and ice cream on offer.

We liked the way the hotel is designed so that the 'day' and 'night' areas are kept separate. The rooms are set at a distance from the centre of the village to maximise the peace and quiet in the bedrooms.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The restaurant has a vast dining room that extends outside onto the terrace, which unfortunately gets too busy. All of the meals are served as a buffet, but drinks are served at your table, even though they are included in the all-inclusive and full-board packages. The quality of the buffet is really high and the Iberotel's stylish presentation and great range of choices is a far cry from the usual inelegant rows of sorry-looking containers.

Two of the starters are prepared on the spot, while the third is ready to eat; the same goes for the main dishes but, thanks to the grill option, you can also ask for a meat or a fish dish to be freshly prepared in front of you. You will also be tempted to pile your plate high with the mouthwatering range of assorted cold meats and salads, vegetables, and desserts on the buffet counter. Other options here include fish, fruit tarts, soups, dairy products, more intricate options, and various kinds of bread.

Vegetarians, vegans, and people who have food allergies or special dietary requirements will all find everything they need for a customised meal prepared using quality ingredients. There is also a buffet just for children, with simple dishes like pasta served plain or with a Bolognese sauce, ham, and escalopes.

    Beach 8.20 /10

There is no need to leave the resort to get to the beach: all you have to do is walk through the pine-wood separating the swimming pool area from the seaside. Once on the beach, it soon becomes apparent that here too, nothing has been left to chance. The stylish white parasols and brown deckchairs make a welcome change from the usual cheap orange furniture, and the fact there is a bar means better service on the beach.

This facility is in a wooden building overlooking the sea, and includes a covered terrace and nice director's chairs that are perfect to settle into for a drink. The all-inclusive package deal covers drinks in this beach bar; just don't forget to wear your bracelet pass wherever you go in the resort. The sand is magnificent and the water crystal clear; what more could you ask for?

    To know

Unlike most of the establishments we visited during our time in Puglia, the Iberotel attracts many guests from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, even though most of the guests staying here are Italians.

The dynamic entertainment team is always busy but never intrusive, with all of the activities being low-key.
