Located on one of the slopes surrounding the Old Port, the Radisson Blu Hotel is in a fabulous location. Although this Radisson follows in line with the standards of the chain, it does have the added and unique advantage of a view over the Old Port of Marseille! With its 189 guest rooms, the Radisson can definitely not be compared to the boutique hotels found in this city. However, thanks to the accommodating personnel and still reasonable size, the Radisson stands out from some of the other impersonal establishments run by certain hotel chains. Add to this a heated swimming pool and a restaurant, and you have a good quality hotel where it is pleasant to stay whether you are here on business or pleasure.

    Location 6.24 /10

Located on one of the slopes surrounding the Old Port, the Radisson benefits from a fabulous view and location, just a few minutes on foot from some bars, restaurants and the ferries that will take you to the coves, the Frioul Islands and Château d'If. It takes a good twenty minutes to reach the train station on foot and the same amount of time to reach the airport by car.

    Accommodation 8.50 /10

The 189 guest rooms include: 111 standards, 66 standards with a view of the Old Port (thus more expensive) and 6 junior suites. The amenities in the two types of standard rooms also vary. Those with a view of the Old Port will also have slippers, bathrobes, breakfast included in the rate of the room, and a Nespresso machine at their disposal. Guests have a choice between two types of decor: Provencal with orange-toned fabrics and African with beige and maroon shades and photographs. Regardless of which one you prefer, the amenities remain the same: a safe, a plasma-screen television, a mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a free Wi-Fi connection. There's nothing very original about the bathrooms, which are fairly traditional but well-equipped: hospitality products labelled Anne Semoin, a hair-dryer, a bathtub and a toilet. You might be interested to know that some of the rooms are adjoining.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The entrance to the hotel is quite impressive and worthy of an international hotel chain. Instead of creating one huge establishment, the Radisson comprises two separate buildings (the Vieux Port and the Citadelle). The round lobby has three reception counters to greet guests and handle the heavy traffic during check-in and check-out times, a standard feature of the group. White, orange, yellow and maroon decorate this area playing homage to ships. A chain and a picture of a boat complete the decor, which favours sobriety. There is a bar at the entrance where you can sip on a drink while you wait. The best thing about the hotel, though, is its outdoor space. Here you will find a park with a large heated swimming pool (open until 11:00pm), a terrace with deckchairs, a volleyball net, mini ping-pong tables, a mini-putt golf course, and a bowling pitch (so typical for Marseille!). Guests can also take advantage of the air-conditioned gym that is open 24/7.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The hotel's restaurant is located in the Old Port, which should be to its advantage but instead simply means there is some very heavy competition in this part of the city. However, this doesn't mean it doesn't put forth its best, though, with its very well thought-out contemporary decor and its cuisine that is a modern take on Mediterranean traditions. Clad in pink and black with a few touches of green and yellow (in reference to olive oil and anise), you might almost prefer to stay and eat here rather than on the terrace! In terms of the food, you won't have to worry about variety. Indeed, the menu is changed every two months. It includes revisited classics like chicken with candied lemon and olives as well as a special tapas menu. You may want to note that there is a restaurant especially dedicated to the business clientele and that light snacks are available at the bar in the lobby.

    To know

With its 11 conference rooms (672m˛ in total), the Radisson is perfectly adapted for business trips. However, you will have to park at a public car park since the hotel doesn't have its own garage.

Part of the Sofitel chain for nearly 40 years now, this hotel really does honour to the upscale hotel group. Reopened in 2009 after 2 years of renovations, the decor in the Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port is as stunning as the view of the Old Port. In fact, the decor was inspired by the luxury yachts moored in the port. With its 8 conference rooms, a spa, an outdoor swimming pool, a bar and a panoramic restaurant, the Sofitel will delight business guests and families alike.

We had already seen hotel-restaurants, boutique hotels and even museum-hotels, but we had never seen a hotel-recording studio in France. This is no longer the case thanks to the Music Hotel, which opened its doors in the autumn of 2011. You come here to sleep, of course, but also to sing songs and most probably in the hopes of meeting a recording artist on the stairs. It isn't possible, however, to eat here, sine the Music Hotel doesn't have a restaurant.

The second hotel in a long line to come, the Mama Shelter Marseille is already proving to be extremely popular despite its recent inauguration (April 2012). A former butcher's and storage unit, founders, Trigano father and son duo and worldwide celebrity designer, Philippe Starck, have realised an unlikely feat. Entirely designed by Starck, the hotel is contemporary and original, while remaining extremely affordable. The hotel is located in the South of France, in Marseille's back streets a 15 minute walk from the old port. The hotel is ideal for a range of clientele, from couples to groups of friends and families. A very reasonably-priced hotel with good dining facilities, a lively bar and an outdoor terrace; it is worth stopping by for dinner, even if you are not staying at the hotel.

Many things are known about Corbusier. What is little known, though, is that the architect also gave his name and his talent to a small hotel with 21 guest rooms taken over by the current owners in 2003. Located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the famous 'Cité Radieuse' in Marseille, the lodgings share the building with the hotel's bar-restaurant, numerous shops and even many flats. The icing on the cake, though, is the rooftop pool. This is an original establishment that will please fans of the artist and, more in general, of architecture.
