Lost in the middle of a small forest, the Governor's opened its doors in 1972. The camp was built along the River Mara and is not closed off so, animals can easily approach. The camp works in partnership with the local population, which allows them to improve their daily lives. A school has already been created, together with an eye clinic.

    Location 4.48 /10

Located to the north of the Masai Mara reserve, the lodge is nearly 190 mi from Nairobi. This might seem close, but appearances can be deceiving; it takes around six hours to get there by road. On the other hand, by air it is only a 35 minute flight and the airfield is not very far from the camp.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

There are 37 tents at the Governor's. Twenty eight have a view over the river, and the other nine over the plain. Small paths lead you to each of them. 24 tents have a double bed, 12 have twin beds, and the last is considered as a suite. There is no electricity here. In the evening, illumination is provided by candles and oil lamps. There is not much decoration in the bedroom, apart from the bedcovers decorated with small elephants. There is a dressing table just by the bathroom, which is separated from the bedroom by a tent curtain and is decorated in ochre tiling, and contains hospitality products. There is no hair-dryer, which would be useless without electricity anyway; however, there are two bathrobes hanging on the wall.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The Governor's welcomes its customers under a small teepee that acts as reception. All the communal areas of the hotel are behind, facing a large lawn and the River Mara. Animals are therefore part of the decor, particularly the hippopotami that have chosen to live here. In fact, this is why the hotel has not built a swimming pool, in order to avoid the hippopotami settling in there as well! As the property is not closed off, you need to be escorted back to your room at nightfall. It is not unusual to come across a few hippopotami here; these animals are not very friendly!

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Facing the river, the Governor's restaurant makes the most of the good weather by setting the tables in the garden. If it rains, they are all gathered together under a beautiful and spacious white tent. The food is served as a buffet in the morning and at midday, and dinner is à la carte. A special mention goes to the dessert buffet which is as varied as it is delicious! The bar is not far from here, and also under a tent. A lovely terrace has been built over the river on stilts, from which you can observe the hippopotami from in complete safety.

    To know

The camp offers several excursions such as safaris with a guide, meals in the bush, fishing parties on Lake Victoria and visits to the nearby Masai villages. At the entrance to the neighbouring camp, the Little's Governor's, there is a space used for departures in a hot-air balloon. It is quite extraordinary to watch the sun rise over the savannah from the sky!
If you decide to go on a safari before breakfast, note that a hot drink will be brought to you in your tent when you wake up.

The Fig Tree Camp, built in the 70's, is one of the oldest in the Masaï Mara. It is in a lovely setting beside the River Talek, one of the branches of the River Mara. Despite the lack of facilities for children, a lot of families come here. So be warned!

Mara Buffalo Camp is located approximately an hour's drive away from the reserve of Masai Mara. The route is rather chaotic because the road is full of stones and very badly maintained. The camp organizes safaris around the hotel anyway, but the landscapes are poorer and the wildlife sparser. When it was founded in 1968 by big game hunters, the camp consisted of tents, now replaced by bungalows.

This is one of the few Masai Mara camps that have a children's club and has 'The Adventurers Club', a proper assault course, has even been built for the little ones. A watering hole located alongside the camp enables guests to safely observe the animals. As far as comfort is concerned, the hotel can certainly hold its own, but its strong point is undoubtedly the size of its grounds which measure 125 acres!

Built on the top of a hill, the Mara Serena Safari Lodge overlooks the national reserve of Masai Mara. It therefore offers its guests a superb panoramic view of the savannah. The few water ponds at the foot of the hill attract various species of animal which you can watch from the hotel. Built in 1973, the hotel was inaugurated six years later, in 1979. Since then, the hotel has been kept very well and is a pleasant place to stay for a safari break in Masai Mara.
