Our favourite hotel in Masai Mara! This magnificent camp is a true delight. The tents are comfortable and pleasant to stay in, the communal areas are large and nicely decorated, and, in particular, the team is adorable and couldn't be any more efficient! A warm welcome and some surprises await you here... A real success story!

    Location 5.0 /10

Located in the northern part of Masai Mara reserve, the camp is approximately 200 mi from Nairobi. Although it may seem close enough to you, it takes about six hours to drive there. The flight, however, is only 35 minutes long. The aerodrome is not far from the camp.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The Kichwa Tembo has 40 tents including 12 superior ones. The great majority of them have a view of the garden and the rest overlook the plains of the reserve. They are all spread out in the garden and far enough away from one another. Basic standard tents are smaller than the superior ones and have no electricity. Light is therefore provided by lovely oil lamps. Apart from that, they are decorated in the same way. The superior standard room is quite simply magnificent, the safari tent that you always dreamt of. The parquet flooring blends in very well with the dark wooden furniture. The bathroom is open to the bedroom and is made of visible stones. You will find hospitality products and bathrobes.

    Overview 7.70 /10

In the heart of the forest of Masaļ Mara is a little gem which we would like to jealously keep to ourselves! Welcome to Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp. Opened over 20 years ago, the camp has belonged to the group 'Conservation Corporation Africa' since 1994. On arrival at the small lobby of the hotel, you will find a room all made out of wood, where the objects up for sale in the boutique are exhibited. We wouldn't mind taking most of them home...
The swimming pool of the hotel, facing the savanna, offers an unobstructed view of the reserve. It is divided in to two parts allowing you to wallow in one and do a few breast strokes in the other. Some deckchairs and parasols are set out, facing the savanna. Some little warthogs peacefully graze in the garden. At night time, you will be able to warm up by a great bonfire in the garden, before having your meal.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The restaurant of the hotel looks out onto the garden with the savanna in the background, you couldn't dream of a better setting. It opens onto the outside, but it is protected by a makuti roof. The exposed beams lend charm to the place. The buffet is set out in the centre of the hall and the tables are well spaced out, so you can have a little privacy. The cuisine is international. The dishes are varied and of very good quality.
The hotel bar is just next to the restaurant. In a cheerful and tranquil atmosphere, the team will invite you for a drink in this quiet and pleasant place, surrounded by black and white photographs of animals and handicraft exhibited all around comfortable sofas.

    To know

The Kichwa Tembo organizes various excursions: safaris with a guide, meals out in the bush and visits of Masai villages. The camp can also organise, via an exterior company, a hot air balloon flight over the reserve. The hotel has no less than 26 vehicles available for its guests!
If you decide to go on a safari before breakfast, note that a hot drink will be brought to you in your tent when you wake up.

The few water ponds at the foot of the hill attract various species of animal which you can watch from the hotel. Built in 1973, the hotel was inaugurated six years later, in 1979. Since then, the hotel has been kept very well and is a pleasant place to stay for a safari break in Masai Mara.

Mara Buffalo Camp is located approximately an hour's drive away from the reserve of Masai Mara. The route is rather chaotic because the road is full of stones and very badly maintained. The camp organizes safaris around the hotel anyway, but the landscapes are poorer and the wildlife sparser. When it was founded in 1968 by big game hunters, the camp consisted of tents, now replaced by bungalows.
