Mara Buffalo Camp is located approximately an hour's drive away from the reserve of Masai Mara. The route is rather chaotic because the road is full of stones and very badly maintained. The camp organizes safaris around the hotel anyway, but the landscapes are poorer and the wildlife sparser. When it was founded in 1968 by big game hunters, the camp consisted of tents, now replaced by bungalows.

    Location 5.0 /10

Mara Buffalo Camp is located 220 mi away from Nairobi. Although it may seem close enough to you, it takes roughly six hours to drive there. 150 mi on tarmac then 60 mi on mud track, it is not the easiest trip ever! The flight, however, is only 35 minutes long. The airfield isn't very far from the road - an approximate 15 minute drive away.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

Some of the 66 bungalows, which look a lot like small chalets, were built in the garden, and others along the Mara river for the others. The bedrooms are all the same category and all decorated in the same way. They are a little dim despite the yellow bedspreads and they desperately lack equipment and decoration. The bathroom is rather Spartan, but has a shower and a toilet opposite each other. Outside, a small terrace gives you the chance to sit outside but it is not isolated enough from the other bungalows.

    Overview 6.20 /10

Milia will be welcoming you here. Nothing surprising so far, except that the beautiful lady actually is... a zebra. This little orphan was taken in as a baby, she grew up at the camp, where she was bottle-fed. The manager of the hotel spends the whole day with this animal who follows him everywhere. Beware, she's very jealous! She will take you to the reception then, in the form of a small wooden cabin. The common areas are in the same place, alongside the Mara river. A little further down in the garden, a view point was arranged above the river so that you can peacefully watch the hippopotamuses paddling in the water, and further away, the crocodiles.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

The main restaurant is quite pleasant. It has been divided into two parts so as to accommodate all the guests when the camp is very busy. For lunch, the hotel sometimes organizes a barbecue outside. The rest of the time, it is a buffet. The small round tables with pink and white table cloths are nicely spaced out, so you don't feel like you are having your meal at your neighbour's table. The cuisine is varied enough, both local and international.
For drinks, go to the Kiboko Bar outside. It is sheltered by a makuti roof. In the middle, there is an area where a bonfire can be lit in the evening.

    To know

As for excursions, the Mara Buffalo Camp organizes safaris with a guide, meals taken out in the bush, a visit to nearby Masai villages, as well as folk shows. The camp can also organize, via an exterior company, a balloon flight over the reserve.

The Fig Tree Camp, built in the 70's, is one of the oldest in the Masaļ Mara. It is in a lovely setting beside the River Talek, one of the branches of the River Mara. Despite the lack of facilities for children, a lot of families come here. So be warned!

The camp works in partnership with the local population, which allows them to improve their daily lives. A school has already been created, together with an eye clinic.

This is one of the few Masai Mara camps that have a children's club and has 'The Adventurers Club', a proper assault course, has even been built for the little ones. A watering hole located alongside the camp enables guests to safely observe the animals. As far as comfort is concerned, the hotel can certainly hold its own, but its strong point is undoubtedly the size of its grounds which measure 125 acres!

Built on the top of a hill, the Mara Serena Safari Lodge overlooks the national reserve of Masai Mara. It therefore offers its guests a superb panoramic view of the savannah. The few water ponds at the foot of the hill attract various species of animal which you can watch from the hotel. Built in 1973, the hotel was inaugurated six years later, in 1979. Since then, the hotel has been kept very well and is a pleasant place to stay for a safari break in Masai Mara.
