Located 1,680 metres high in altitude, the Mara Simba Lodge was inaugurated in 1996 and was last renovated in 2005, essentially in order to protect the makuti roofs. The hotel's main asset is the size of the accommodation, whether in bedrooms or in tents.

    Location 4.48 /10

Located in the reserve of Masai Mara, the lodge is approximately 150 mi away from Nairobi. Although it may seem close enough to you, it takes roughly six hours to drive there. Once you have passed the gates of the reserve, another 20 minutes are necessary to reach the camp. The flight however is only 45 minutes long. The airfield is only five minutes away.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

Two types of accommodation are available here: 84 bedrooms and 17 tents. Both categories are very spacious. You will walk into the tent through a large patio door, and it is equipped with a fan. The floor is of parquet, and the base of the bed is made out of large wooden beams. The African decoration is a success. The bathroom has a double granite sink and hospitality products. As for the bedrooms, they are distributed over small units which look like chalets, in groups of six. Four are on ground floor and two upstairs. Families can reserve connecting bedrooms. The interior decoration is rather simple: all the furniture is wood and some photos of animals hang on the walls. In the bathroom, a shower is in one corner and, in the opposite corner, the sink is the place where you will find your hospitality products.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Surrounded by electric fencing, the Mara Simba Lodge stretches over a wide stretch of land with lovely greenery. On arrival, it is not easy to find your way when the generator isn't on, the common areas all being as dark as one another. All built of wood, the reception is vast. It boasts beautiful exposed beams. Everything here is built on stilts, above the Talek river. The hotel bar, the Kiboko Bar, is very spacious and has a large fire place. It has a beautiful view on one of the river's elbows. The swimming pool is next to the reception but the water is slightly cloudy... Wooden deckchairs allow you to laze in the sun.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The Kifaru, the lodge's main restaurant, has a capacity of 200 guests. No need to say it is a large hall. It is set on stilts, as are the rest of the communal areas, and serves a buffet but, when the hotel isn't full, you may be able to choose à la carte. Large tables occupy the area, decorated by green and white tablecloths. The restaurant is open for all three meals of the day and serves international cuisine.

    To know

The Mara Simba organizes various excursions: day time as well as night time safaris with a guide, meals out in the bush and visits of Masai villages. The camp can also organize, via an exterior company, a balloon flight over the reserve.
Do not be surprised if there is no electricity in your bedroom at certain times. The rooms are powered by a generator. The power cuts are programmed to take place from 10am to 12.45pm, from 3pm to 5.45pm and from 11.30pm to 4.30am.

The Fig Tree Camp, built in the 70's, is one of the oldest in the Masaï Mara. It is in a lovely setting beside the River Talek, one of the branches of the River Mara. Despite the lack of facilities for children, a lot of families come here. So be warned!

Mara Buffalo Camp is located approximately an hour's drive away from the reserve of Masai Mara. The route is rather chaotic because the road is full of stones and very badly maintained. The camp organizes safaris around the hotel anyway, but the landscapes are poorer and the wildlife sparser. When it was founded in 1968 by big game hunters, the camp consisted of tents, now replaced by bungalows.

Lost in the middle of a small forest, the Governor's opened its doors in 1972. The camp was built along the River Mara and is not closed off so, animals can easily approach. The camp works in partnership with the local population, which allows them to improve their daily lives. A school has already been created, together with an eye clinic.

From far, you can only make out a few white tents hanging off the hillside... Once there, you will discover one of the region's most beautiful camps. All is refinement, luxury and voluptuousness. This is one of the few Masai Mara camps that have a children's club and has 'The Adventurers Club', a proper assault course, has even been built for the little ones. A watering hole located alongside the camp enables guests to safely observe the animals. As far as comfort is concerned, the hotel can certainly hold its own, but its strong point is undoubtedly the size of its grounds which measure 125 acres!

Built on the top of a hill, the Mara Serena Safari Lodge overlooks the national reserve of Masai Mara. It therefore offers its guests a superb panoramic view of the savannah. The few water ponds at the foot of the hill attract various species of animal which you can watch from the hotel. Built in 1973, the hotel was inaugurated six years later, in 1979. Since then, the hotel has been kept very well and is a pleasant place to stay for a safari break in Masai Mara.
