Amy Adejokun Section editor

This is one of the few Masai Mara camps that have a children's club and has 'The Adventurers Club', a proper assault course, has even been built for the little ones. A watering hole located alongside the camp enables guests to safely observe the animals. As far as comfort is concerned, the hotel can certainly hold its own, but its strong point is undoubtedly the size of its grounds which measure 125 acres!

    Location 3.0 /10

The camp is located outside the Masai Mara reserve, around 150 mi from Nairobi. That may sound rather close, but appearances can be deceptive - it takes around six hours to get there by road. However, if you are arriving by air, it only takes around 45 minutes which is advantageous considering that the airfield is only five minutes away by car.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

Electricity is supplied to the camp's 40 tents by a generator. Lights can therefore only be switched on after 6pm. Candles and oil lamps are used the rest of the time. The tents are all spread out and concealed in the camp's huge garden, grouped into small blocks. It may help you get your bearings if you know that each of them has been given the name of a tree. On arrival, you will find fresh water in your new accommodation. Standard tents are rather spacious, with a double or twin beds. The decor is fairly basic, but the Masai colours of the bedspread brighten the place up. Outside, guests can enjoy the small terrace that is equipped with a table and two chairs. The bathroom is also rather quite large and made entirely of wood. The shower and toilet are in areas separated by the washbasin, where hospitality products are provided.

    Overview 7.45 /10

The Siana Springs Camp is reached via a small path surrounded by beautiful vegetation which leads to a small, makuti-roofed reception that welcomes the guests. An imposing stone counter stands to the side of the room. The airy surroundings are welcoming, but unfortunately rather dark. Guests will then notice the huge, regularly maintained garden. Large bamboo plantations are part of the decor. A large fire is lit every evening in an area in the middle of the camp around which guests can sit and relax on the large wooden logs provided. The hotel's restaurant and bar are located nearby. A little further along in the middle of the garden, the swimming pool awaits its guests. Its rounded aspect and its modern decor make it pleasant place to wind down on one of the wooden deckchairs provided.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

Protected by a canvas roof, the camp's main restaurant serves all three meals of the day in the form of a buffet. Large wooden tables are laid out next to each other but are still fairly well spaced out. Nevertheless, it is difficult to imagine having a very romantic meal here. The central beams supporting the roof have been covered in red and black Masai fabrics, and a few African ornaments hang from the others. The area can accommodate up to 80 people. Guests also have the option of dining under the stars, weather permitting. For those with a thirst to quench, the bar is just next door. This area is built in the same way as the restaurant, but the armchairs are covered in fabrics that could do with being replaced.

    To know

The Siana Springs organises various excursions such as guided safaris, meals in the bush, fishing parties on Lake Victoria and visits to Masai villages. The camp can also organise hot-air balloon rides over the reserve through an external company.
Despite the electric fence that surrounds the camp, monkeys have taken up residence in the garden, so make sure you close your tent properly to avoid them running off with your things!

The Fig Tree Camp, built in the 70's, is one of the oldest in the Masaļ Mara. It is in a lovely setting beside the River Talek, one of the branches of the River Mara. Despite the lack of facilities for children, a lot of families come here. So be warned!

Mara Buffalo Camp is located approximately an hour's drive away from the reserve of Masai Mara. The route is rather chaotic because the road is full of stones and very badly maintained. The camp organizes safaris around the hotel anyway, but the landscapes are poorer and the wildlife sparser. When it was founded in 1968 by big game hunters, the camp consisted of tents, now replaced by bungalows.

Lost in the middle of a small forest, the Governor's opened its doors in 1972. The camp was built along the River Mara and is not closed off so, animals can easily approach. The camp works in partnership with the local population, which allows them to improve their daily lives. A school has already been created, together with an eye clinic.

From far, you can only make out a few white tents hanging off the hillside... Once there, you will discover one of the region's most beautiful camps. All is refinement, luxury and voluptuousness. A real treat!

The few water ponds at the foot of the hill attract various species of animal which you can watch from the hotel. Built in 1973, the hotel was inaugurated six years later, in 1979. Since then, the hotel has been kept very well and is a pleasant place to stay for a safari break in Masai Mara.
