    Location 4.72 /10

It is located inside a protected natural site, near the small town of Mellieha. Ghadira Beach is 4.3 miles away from the hotel. Allow 45 minutes to get to Valetta, or the airport ( 10 miles ).

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel has 140 standard rooms and 16 suites, 10 of which are located inside the castle. Most of them have a balcony or a terrace that offers a view of the swimming pool, countryside or sea. The rooms are rather disappointing. The floors are tiled and the white wood decoration is very ordinary. The comfort is standard : air conditioning, satellite television, direct telephone line for international calling, mini-bar, safe ( for an extra charge ), hair dryer and room service up till midnight. The bathroom is equipped with a bathtub, a liquid soap and shampoo dispenser, and two big angle mirrors.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The hotel was built in 1981, on a promontory that dominates both Mellieha Bay and Saint Paul's Bay, right next to the Selmum castle. Thanks to its simple architecture, which is all built in Maltese stone, this modern 2-storey building does not clash with the castle. The central place is located between the hotel and the castle. It was fitted out with Mediterranean gardens and a 250 m² swimming pool decorated with an aqueduct. In addition, the solarium, equipped with deckchairs and sunshades, offers a magnificent view of the castle. As for the leisure facilities, you will find a covered swimming pool and a fitness room which is unfortunately not very pleasant ( carpeting, no ventilation and a pinball machine is in there !) Upstairs, the terraces outside of the Charlie's Bar are especially nice : one has a view of the swimming pool and castle, the other, of the sea and countryside. Throughout the year, 2 or 3 counselors offer sport events, games, shows and theme parties.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The "De Favray" is the hotel's main restaurant. It serves buffet breakfasts, a la carte lunches and dinners ( international buffet ) in a heavy pink setting. The dinner buffet consists of salads, soup, 7 main courses, fruits and cakes. The quality of the food is very ordinary. Some evenings, the hotel organizes theme dinners ( local, Italian cuisine, and more ). The swimming pool snack bar is open from May through September. For lunch, it offers Maltese and international specialities, barbecue grillings as well as the usual snack menu. If you want a real feast, book a table at ?Le Château,? the gastronomic restaurant. A mouth-watering menu will be offered to you ( 10 starters, 3 kinds of pasta, 7 meat dishes, 6 fish choices and 7 desserts ) in a beautiful dining room that has a vaulted ceiling and which is decorated with a large Maltese cross. Be aware that the restaurant is only open on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights.

    Beach 6.95 /10

The closest beach, the one the hotel staff calls ?Selmun Beach?, is located just a short mile away from the hotel. You can get to it on foot, after trekking for about a quarter of an hour through the dried out countryside. Isolated and set between two small rocky capes, the beach almost looks like a private beach since only guests from the hotel go there. The setting is pleasant because it is completely isolated from the rest of the island. You need to bring towels and sunshade because the beach isn't totally equipped.

    To know

Formerly, the Selmun Palace was the summer residence for the grand masters of the Order of Saint John. Domenico Cachia built it during the 18th century, in the style of the Verdala castle, located in the south of Malta, near Dingli. This domain was the property of a religious congregation, created by the initiative of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, in order to raise funds to pay for the ransom of Christians who had been captured by the Ottomans. The chapel that is close to the castle has been christened as Our Lady of Ransom in honour of this congregation.

The Mellieha Bay Hotel is a concrete complex stretching along the coastline next to Mellieha Bay. This location in the north of Malta is some distance from the main centres of interest on the island, but the hotel does have other things going for it, like the island's largest sandy beach just a stone's throw away, and the embarkation point for ferries to the nearby islands of Gozo and Comino. The hotel has a rather outdated appearance, and offers a limited set of facilities, choosing instead to bank on its location and green spaces. Families might be a little bit disappointed with the accommodation options on offer at the hotel, because the rooms can only sleep a maximum of 3 guests. However, for tighter budgets, this is one of the rare hotels on the island to offer an all inclusive package deal.

Far from the bustle of the larger cities in the east of the island, the town of Mellieha is nestled on the heights of the Northern part of Malta and offers an enjoyable retreat, without being totally cut off from the coast and its assets. After a long renovation phase, the hotel has just re-opened and now displays a much more modern and contemporary style. It's a pity that the older rooms didn't get the same treatment, but overall the hotel offers good value for money.
