This imposing yet elegant hotel has everything to please Americans, but has a harder time winning over Europeans, who prefer smaller hotels with charm. Unless they're golf lovers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami for a few days for a spot of sport, well-being, and shopping. Location 3.1 /10

Located in Aventura, a 30-minute drive north of Miami, the hotel is a few minute's walk from the Mall the city is famous for.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The guest rooms are American-size, meaning very big. It's all there: carpeted floor, huge flat-screen television, dark wood furniture, king-size bed, large walk-in closet, and the lounge area in front of the picture window opens out onto a lovely furnished balcony. The state-of-the-art amenities are enough to please even the most demanding guests, but if you are hoping for a bit of charm, look elsewhere. Luxury, elegance and comfort are the keywords here. The very spacious bathrooms have all the makings of a 5-star hotel, in other words a shower and a bathtub, a separate toilet, various mirrors and lights of all sorts, not to mention a holiday's worst nightmare - an electric scale!

    Overview 8.05 /10

This large hotel is imposing from the minute you arrive at the grandiose entrance, between the fountain and the pond inhabited by fish and turtles below the patio. The featured style is Mediterranean. After passing through the slightly cold and 'administrative' reception, guests arrive at the heart of the hotel in the remarkable lobby, which opens onto the colonial-style lounge with a dark wood bar and furniture that contrast with the pastel colours to create a warm ambiance. Behind this gigantic lounge-bar is the entrance to the inner courtyard where one of the two swimming pools is located, the most peaceful of the two. This delightful flowery space has an outdoor bar where guests can sip on a cocktail while enjoying the concerts that take place on certain days.
Families will head away from this flowery courtyard towards the second swimming pool where there is music, entertainment, waterfalls, kids pools and cabins to delight children and adults, as long as they don't mind the noise. A restaurant that serves giant salads and excellent smoothies opens onto this aquatic area supervised by lifeguards.
In addition to these two swimming pools, which are highly appreciated in a region where temperatures never fall below 20 degrees, the hotel also has a spa spread over 3 floors for some exercise or relaxation, well-deserved or not.
Children are far from left out, with a kids club open from 9:00am to 3:00pm where all sorts of activities are on offer: cooking classes, films in the swimming pool (we're in America, after all!), a beach, etc. The club is charged extra and accepts children ages 4 to 12.
What is special about this luxury establishment, however, are the two surrounding golf courses, lined by rows of palm trees, a gigantic waterfall, and various bodies of water: a perfectly maintained garden where nothing is too much!
Tennis enthusiasts can take advantage of the 4 tennis courts available!

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

The day begins with an exceptional breakfast, certainly one of the most varied and best that I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Savoury, sweet, fruit, hot and cold, it's all there! Those that like their air-conditioning can eat inside while the rest can head out to the terrace opposite the golf course and the artificial waterfall, but if it's late the temperatures can be difficult to bear. This first meal of the day is served at the Cascata Grill, which is open all day and serves Mediterranean cuisine. The chef uses products from the herb garden to prepare the tasty and original meals. They are truly delicious! For lunch and until 5:00pm, the swimming pool restaurant, the Laguna Grill, offers huge salads, smoothies, and classic yet generous and tasty dishes, all served under the palm trees in a relaxed atmosphere. Guests can even get something to eat on the beach. Whatever guests want, the hotel does its best to please.

    Spa

Off to one side, the spa is a haven of peace where, as in the rest of the hotel, everything is large scale. With a grand staircase lit up by light coming in from a glass roof, the spa is both elegant and Zen and decorated in dark colours. Massage and treatment rooms are located on the top floor, and there is a state-of-the-art gym with mainly treadmills. Furnished in a rare traditional style and decorated with chandeliers, the spa is fairly unusual and can seem a bit cold at first, but you'll soon feel relaxed. The little smoothie bar will delight fans of this typically American drink!

    Beach

A free shuttle bus takes guests to the beach in around ten minutes. Pleasant, wide and equipped with deckchairs, the beach is fairly quiet and is perfect for a spot of lazing around. Water sports are available.

    To know

The hotel has a herb garden with fruit trees, where all types of plants grow completely undisturbed. It definitely isn't big enough to cater to the hotel's 800 guests (at maximum capacity), but just enough to add to a few dishes and to offer seasonal fruit for breakfast! Guests can take a guided tour with a chef who will explain the virtues of each fruit and plant and then finish off with a little cooking class in the middle of the lawn.
Yoga classes (sporty) take place every morning in the corner of the hotel lawn.

If you're in Miami and looking for exotic, green, and lush surroundings, head for The Palms Hotel. Its quaint atmosphere will immerse you in a pleasantly laidback world. To be enjoyed without moderation. The only snag is that the hotel is a bit far from Miami's sights of interest.

The Howard Johnson is probably not a great place to stay if you wish to make the most of Miami Beach, because the hotel is some way away. Its decor hardly makes it a place you are likely to linger, either. However, if you love beautiful old American cars and are nostalgic for the 1950s in general, sit yourself down at one of the Cadillacs in the restaurant and soak up the feel of the United States in the 1950's.

The Eden Roc is a legendary hotel that has welcomed many legendary guests; Humphrey Boggart, Lauren Bacall, and Frank Sinatra, among numerous others. It boasts an imposing architecture and high quality facilities. Everything is here for a pleasant stay, but it's a bit far from all of Miami's hustle and bustle. However, it's the perfect place if you're looking to relax.

Now it's your turn to be the star, so enjoy a night or two of unadulterated luxury in this sprawling establishment where nothing is lacking.

The Pelican is without doubt one of the best hotels that you will find in the centre of busy Ocean Drive. It is not a luxury hotel, but the small boutique hotel, created by Diesel creator, Renzo Rosso, is well worth the stay if you want to be at the heart of the action and don't want to spend too much. The Pelican has existed as a hotel since the 30s and is somewhat of a landmark, although it is fairly quiet. Every room is decorated in a different theme, from rainforest to Hollywood. If you don't end up staying here, we strongly recommend you stop by to sample the restaurant's pancakes - they are the most delicious pancakes you will try in Miami; make sure you work up an appetite first though!

The Soho Beach House is a charming little hotel located on the quieter part of Collins Avenue. Previously a members-only club, the hotel has been open to the public since October 2010. The hotel is a cross between an old English pub and beach house and sits right on Miami Beach. The quirky touches like the free photo booth and the playful Cowshed products add a contemporary touch. The major advantages here are its spacious, luxury beach house style rooms and its entirely wooden spa. The hotel is intimate yet extremely animated in the lobby area due to the bustling Cecconi's restaurant, which is also open to the public. For those of you looking for peace and quiet and more intimacy, the Soho Beach House isn't the best option, however, complete with a pool, easy beach access, and high quality tastefully decorated rooms, the hotel is ideal for couples and groups of friends looking for a lively base in a quieter part of South Beach to explore the city from.

A Leading Small Hotel of the World, the Acqualina Resort and Spa, is a luxury family resort situated about half an hour's drive from the centre of South Beach on Miami Beach in an area known as Sunny Isles. There is nothing in the surroundings, which is great if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, but not so great if you want to explore the sights. The hotel is more of an apartment-hotel, so the rooms are actually all suites with fully-equipped kitchens, which is ideal for families (there are also a good number of connecting rooms). The rooms are tastefully decorated but the real plus point here is the beautiful beach and because of its location, you are far from the madding crowds of the beach in South Beach.

Sexy, cool, yet discreet, the hotel's unrivalled calm and hushed atmosphere held within its seemingly fortified walls gives the utmost sense of privacy and intimacy. Like no other hotel in Miami, the sophisticated Setai proudly boasts a Leading Hotel of the World label and banks its success on simple, calm and soothing elements throughout, making it a perfect little haven of peace and quiet for guests needing to get away from it all whilst still having access to Miami's buzzing nightlife and beach scene. Although the hotel does welcome families, it is recommended that the children be extremely well-behaved to avoid any steely glares from Miami's high-society.

As you can imagine, there is nothing ordinary about this little haven of peace, quiet, fashion and flamboyancy! True to Mr Versace himself, Barton G has kept his spirit alive by keeping everything as it was with a few minor alterations. You can rent Madonna's suite (the only one with a bath tub) or Elton John's, both of whom were the designer's very close friends. For those of you who can afford it, this is a beautiful hotel to stay at for its stunning pool with 24 carat gold mosaics and meticulous personalised service. A world-famous landmark worth stopping by for a couple of nights.

Without doubt one of our favourite hotels, the very stylish Viceroy Miami has it all with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and a spa designed by Philippe Starck that will wow you over and over again. Although a little bit big to be defined as a boutique hotel, everything has been carefully studied to give the same impact design-wise. Throw in the flawless service, the spacious rooms and the incredible food at the Eos restaurant, the Viceroy Miami runs right into our top three hotels in Miami. The hotel is located Downtown, far from the South Beach hubbub, so it isn't the best choice for those of you looking for a hotel centered around a beach atmosphere, but if you plan on hiring a car, the journey is worth it if what you are looking for is excellence from house-keeping to design. For those of you with young families, the hotel is a lot more child friendly than its quirky design lets on. With the longest roof-top swimming pool in Florida, if not the entire United States, kids will be enthralled for hours.

Cool, sassy and fun, the W South Beach is without doubt one of the highest-profile hotels in Miami and not without good reason. The most impressive aspect of the hotel is its $60 million collection of contemporary art alongside its impressive range of high quality facilities such as its bar, restaurants and pool. It is also located on the beach in a quieter part of SoBe. The hotel is one of the largest in the city and so lacks a little intimacy. A major downer however, is that the rooms severely lack ergonomics and the high quality finish that is expected for the prices charged. Otherwise the gimmicky hotel is fun, young and dynamic and is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele from groups of friends to families and couples.

Combining colonial cool with contemporary casual, this is the ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele including yummy mummies who thank the bulky doormen with a "Thank you honey-bunny". An attractive hotel that has mastered understated elegance down to a T, has all the facilities you would want on holiday, from a rooftop spa to a renowned steakhouse, a funky chic bar to its very own art collection, the Betsy is one of the more pleasant places to stay in Miami. It is the latest addition to its Los Angeles namesake. SLS is expanding across the country. Soon it will be possible to travel across America from one SLS to another! And life will be designer!
