Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Marriott South Beach is a fair sized hotel located right on Miami Beach in an area technically called 'SoFi', meaning South of Fifth Street. It is still on famous Ocean Drive, but the area is a short walk from the main action. It is ideal for holidaymakers who are in need of some peace and quiet as the beaches are overall less crowded than in the centre of the Art Deco district. The beach here also seems to be of a higher quality than in the centre. The hotel is also extremely well positioned - its pool and deck are situated practically right on the beach, which means that you have a clear view of the ocean while sunbathing around the pool. The facilities and rooms are of Marriott 4 star standard; nothing too fancy. This hotel is ideal for guests wanting to stay somewhere good-value for money and within walking distance of the main Ocean Drive action. Although there are no specifically tailored facilities, children of all ages are welcome.

    Location 5.15 /10

The Marriott South Beach is located in the south of South Beach in an area technically known as 'SoFi', meaning south of Fifth Street. The hotel sits on Ocean Drive but closer to South Point than the Art Deco district. The main Ocean Drive action is a 10 minute walk away. The hotel sits right on Miami Beach and is a short walk from South Point, a green area to the south of South Beach, where you will find a couple of upmarket restaurants. The area around the hotel is also a lot more residential than the rest of South Beach. There is even a children's playground next door, where locals take their children at the weekends.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

The hotel has 228 rooms and 8 suites, all with a sea view, although not all rooms have a balcony. There no bathrobes or slippers here, however there are complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The rooms do not have a mini bar but do have a cooler (use is free of charge). On the whole, the rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. The light yellow walls, blue carpets and crisp white bed linen give the room a pleasant fresh ambience. The bathrooms are on the small side but a bath tub has been squeezed in. Bathrooms are stocked with orange and ginger Bath and Blossom Aromatherapy toiletries. Otherwise the bathrooms are equipped with a hairdryer and maximising mirror. There is wireless internet all over the hotel but there is a charge. For those of you who don't plan on bringing your own computer, there is a small business centre located behind the lobby.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Open in 2000, the hotel has been well-maintained. Its location is a prime factor as it is positioned almost right on the beach. Its main entrance is on Ocean Drive (south of Fifth Street). The lobby is small but functional; the hotel has a popular business wing and if the meeting are busy, there tends to be quite a few business people hanging around, which can be a little off-putting while you're on holiday. The overall hotel decor is contemporary and colourful but as it is a new build, it doesn't have the Art Deco charm you might be looking for. It is however a good choice if you are on a budget (although it is not a budget hotel) with children. In terms of facilities there is a well-equipped gym, a small spa, two pools and a restaurant. There is also a sealed off room that has a makeshift bird 'sanctuary' - however, the aim of this space is unclear as it is too humid to stay in the room for longer than 10 minutes.

An advantage to this hotel is the variety of places to sit and read, like the small lounge areas dotted around the main floor and the exterior lounge a level up from the pool. Uplifting pop music is played throughout the hotel. Although nothing apart from its pool deck stands out, overall, the Marriott South Beach is a very pleasant hotel to stay at, especially for some downtime with the family.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

The hotel has a Starbuck's Coffee lounge on the ground floor and a pool bar that is adjoined to the main restaurant. The restaurant is a little dark due to it tinted windows, but at the height of summer this is a good compromise between the view and the heat. The food here is good old American food served three times daily. It has lovely outdoor seating looking out onto the beach. The interiors of the hotel are little more conventional, with booths and high tables as well as your conventional two or four seater low tables. The restaurant looks a little drab and dull despite the use of bright orange for the banquettes. For guests who prefer to dine within the privacy of their room, room service operates twenty-four hours.

    Beach 7.70 /10

Despite being far from the Miami beach action, this end of the beach wins hands down for peace and tranquillity. The water and sand quality are the same if not slightly better. This end of the beach is a lot cheaper than staying at the heart of Ocean Drive or the Art Deco district and is a lot calmer and more residential. The atmosphere here is perfect for those of you in need to get away from it all whilst still being close to the South Beach frenzy. The hotel has a dedicated area on the beach with sun loungers, parasols and the like, but anyone can rent beach chairs and towels.

    To know

Parking can be expensive in Miami, so if you are planning on driving here, do plan a budget. Most hotels charge from $30 (£18), but rates vary, so it is best to ask the hotel before making a decision. The hotel has several rooms that have been adapted for people with restricted movement and there is also a lift to the beach.

The Clinton is a small, pleasant and unpretentious hotel, and although it is not right next to all the activity on Ocean Drive, it does at least offer guests the peace and quiet of Washington Avenue. Therefore, if you want to get away from the liveliness of Ocean Drive, you can do so. The guest rooms look perfectly acceptable.

The façade of the hotel should ring a bell straight away, because it is one of the most famous on Ocean Drive. The subject of thousands of photos, it perfectly epitomises the Art Deco architectural style of Miami Beach. This is a small, charming establishment, and the stylish, modern decor in the rooms is a really pleasant surprise. If you want your stay on Ocean Drive to be truly memorable, the Colony is the place to stay.

This is definitely not a luxury hotel, but you will see that all the essentials are there nevertheless, with a good bed and spacious and clean guest rooms.

Essex House is a small hotel that is easily missed if you don't know what you're looking for despite being somewhat of a landmark in South Beach. One of Al Capone's favourite hangouts when the hotel bar used to be a casino back in the 30s, the lobby remains as it was when it first opened and is one of the best examples of South Florida Art Deco around. There isn't much to the hotel today, but the secret is in its enormous lobby fireplace and original Earl le Pan mural painted in 1938. You will find another of his most famous oeuvres at the Hotel Victor (now a Hyatt - see our review of this hotel) on Ocean Drive. The Essex House is particularly popular with the British and is a quiet place to stay, unlike its sister hotel, the Clevelander next door ((see our review of this hotel).

Wave is a small Art Deco boutique hotel situated south of South Beach in an area technically known as 'SoFi', meaning south of Fifth Street in South Beach. Still on Ocean Drive, but far from the action, Wave is in a quiet area away from the bustle of restaurants and bars. The beach down at this end of South beach is one of the best in the city as it is a lot quieter and more relaxed. The hotel itself is undergoing a complete renovation, which will include a small pool in the backyard. As it is, the hotel is ideal for anyone on a budget looking for a quiet beach side base to explore the rest of the city from for a few days.

The Hilton Bentley is a small hotel that was originally built to be a block of condos meaning that the rooms are fairly spacious; however, the décor leaves a lot to be desired. As the hotel is a new build, it doesn't have the charm of the Art Deco hotels in the area, but as mentioned above, this does mean that the room sizes are more generous. Technically the hotel's location in an area called 'SoFi', meaning south of Fifth Street, but it is still on Ocean Drive right on the beach. The hotel is the perfect place to stay if you are on a budget and you don't want to be part of the hustle and bustle of the heart of South Beach. This small three star Barbie meets Barbarella motel rather than hotel is located in the livelier area of Collins Avenue in South Beach. The hotel has seen better days as its white PVC and hot pink interiors are dated, despite part of the rooms having undergone a recent renovation. The hotel is ideal if you are on a budget and want to be in the centre of the South Beach area. Although the beach and the bustling Ocean Drive area is a 10 minute walk away, the area is one of the city's main shopping hubs. The hotel tends to attract British and Russian couples as well as groups of friends on stag and hen dos. If you plan on spending most of your time out and about then this hotel is perfect.

Without doubt one of our favourite hotels, the very stylish Viceroy Miami has it all with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and a spa designed by Philippe Starck that will wow you over and over again. Although a little bit big to be defined as a boutique hotel, everything has been carefully studied to give the same impact design-wise. Throw in the flawless service, the spacious rooms and the incredible food at the Eos restaurant, the Viceroy Miami runs right into our top three hotels in Miami. The hotel is located Downtown, far from the South Beach hubbub, so it isn't the best choice for those of you looking for a hotel centered around a beach atmosphere, but if you plan on hiring a car, the journey is worth it if what you are looking for is excellence from house-keeping to design. For those of you with young families, the hotel is a lot more child friendly than its quirky design lets on. With the longest roof-top swimming pool in Florida, if not the entire United States, kids will be enthralled for hours.

Cool, sassy and fun, the W South Beach is without doubt one of the highest-profile hotels in Miami and not without good reason. The most impressive aspect of the hotel is its $60 million collection of contemporary art alongside its impressive range of high quality facilities such as its bar, restaurants and pool. It is also located on the beach in a quieter part of SoBe. The hotel is one of the largest in the city and so lacks a little intimacy. A major downer however, is that the rooms severely lack ergonomics and the high quality finish that is expected for the prices charged. Otherwise the gimmicky hotel is fun, young and dynamic and is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele from groups of friends to families and couples.
