For those of you who like your traditional North American luxury, the Ritz-Carlton brand is a sure bet without the pretentious edge and with excellent service standards. The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove is one of three hotels of the same group in Miami and is located in a quiet charming area brimming with art galleries and quaint bars and restaurants. The hotel is ideal for holidaymakers looking for some peace and quiet away from the buoyant South Beach scene as the pace is a lot slower here. The hotel itself is in the typical Ritz Carlton style, with traditional marble floors, heavy floral carpets and large airy spaces. The staff here is one of the friendliest bunch we have had the pleasure of coming across in the city; professional yet very friendly and bubbly, it makes a welcome change from the stiff batch of hotel staff we can sometimes encounter. Children are welcome here, although the Ritz-Carlton South Beach is a better choice due to its more extensive kids' programmes.

    Location 3.0 /10

The hotel is located on four acres of lushly-landscaped gardens close to the Coral Gables shopping district and international business and banking centers of Brickell Avenue and downtown Miami. South Beach is a 30 minute drive away.

Coconut Grove is a lot more mellow than the rest of Miami, which makes for a very welcome breath of fresh air if you are in need of some down time. Coconut Grove dates back to 1825, making it one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods. It is full of art galleries, bars and restaurants and has retained its bohemian atmosphere despite the wealth that it has attracted in the last ten years.

Today, this former artist colony is still home to many working artisans and hosts several annual art festivals and events such as, The Coconut Grove Arts Festival, King Mango Strut and the Orange Bowl Parade.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 115 rooms altogether, making the hotel smaller than it looks from the outset. There are three types of suites: Bay View, Executive and Presidential, and two types of rooms: Bay View and Deluxe. The rooms start at 420 sq feet and the suites are a lot roomier at 900 sq feet.

The rooms are bright and cosy. All rooms have complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities, although we were a little disappointed to find cardboard cups as opposed to crockery. The marble bathrooms are all fairly spacious and fitted with full-size bath tubs and free standing showers. The amenities are of the high end brand, Bulgari in the suites and of the Ritz-Carlton brand in the remainder of the rooms. All rooms have a balcony and large windows letting in plenty of light. Most of the views are of the neighbouring apartment blocks, as well as of the small marina across the street.

All linens are of the Fretta brand, a mark of high quality, and duvets are all goose-down, giving those lovely king size beds even more comfort and cosiness! All bathrooms have slippers and bathrobes.

High-speed internet access is available throughout the hotel at an extra cost.

The hotel has green initiatives like saving on water by asking their guests to re-use the same towels for longer. The company also tries to recycle its waste and use 30 per cent of recycled material along with a few other initiatives, which you will find on the hotels' websites.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel is situated in a quiet affluent bohemian neighbourhood and is one of few hotels in the area. It opened in 2002 and was last renovated in 2008. A new build, there is nothing to act as reminder of Art Deco in its design or décor, which is fairly classic and simple. The marble floors and heavy floral carpets are typical of the brand, along with the long heavy drapes that hang on the floor to ceiling windows. The structure resembles that of a small manor in its size and space. The decor does feel a little dated in comparison to the vibrant Starck creations over in South Beach, but it is synonymous with luxury. In spite of its size, the hotel remains comfortable, due to the warm colours used and the staff knowing just how to put guests at ease right away. The atmosphere here is generally quiet and soothing, especially around the outdoor pool, which is hidden among the vegetation of the grounds surrounding the hotel. The infinity-edged pool has smart cabanas dotted all around its edges - these can be rented by guests at an extra charge. Otherwise there are a good number of sun loungers and parasols. The area is in the shade in the morning due to the neighbouring tower blocking the sun, so best to leave sunbathing until the afternoon.

The Ritz-Carlton spa found in a separate wing of the hotel, along with the hotel gym, has six treatment rooms, a wet room and an exfoliation room. One of the favourite treatments here includes a body scrub with champagne extracts, which smells gorgeous. The spa is open from 10:00am to 6:00pm and the gym is open 24 hours.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

When it comes to eating and drinking, guests can choose to have cocktail or glass of wine whilst listening to live music in the lobby lounge before heading to the Bizcaya restaurant, which is an Italian trattoria with lovely indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A Sunday brunch is also served here every week. The menu consists in a mix between typical American food and Italian cuisine.

Like the rest of the hotel, the restaurant is spacious and smartly decorated with sleek chequered floors and mahogany furniture. Despite its elegant décor, Bizcaya has a comfortable atmosphere.

One of Miami's best hotels, The Setai's oriental inspired design sets it apart from other luxury South Beach hotels and makes for a welcome change that is being enjoyed by celebrities across the globe. Sexy, cool, yet discreet, the hotel's unrivalled calm and hushed atmosphere held within its seemingly fortified walls gives the utmost sense of privacy and intimacy. Like no other hotel in Miami, the sophisticated Setai proudly boasts a Leading Hotel of the World label and banks its success on simple, calm and soothing elements throughout, making it a perfect little haven of peace and quiet for guests needing to get away from it all whilst still having access to Miami's buzzing nightlife and beach scene. Although the hotel does welcome families, it is recommended that the children be extremely well-behaved to avoid any steely glares from Miami's high-society.

The Versace Mansion has been converted into a small and very exclusive hotel now known as The Villa by Barton G. As you can imagine, there is nothing ordinary about this little haven of peace, quiet, fashion and flamboyancy! True to Mr Versace himself, Barton G has kept his spirit alive by keeping everything as it was with a few minor alterations. You can rent Madonna's suite (the only one with a bath tub) or Elton John's, both of whom were the designer's very close friends. For those of you who can afford it, this is a beautiful hotel to stay at for its stunning pool with 24 carat gold mosaics and meticulous personalised service. A world-famous landmark worth stopping by for a couple of nights.

Without doubt one of our favourite hotels, the very stylish Viceroy Miami has it all with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and a spa designed by Philippe Starck that will wow you over and over again. Although a little bit big to be defined as a boutique hotel, everything has been carefully studied to give the same impact design-wise. Throw in the flawless service, the spacious rooms and the incredible food at the Eos restaurant, the Viceroy Miami runs right into our top three hotels in Miami. The hotel is located Downtown, far from the South Beach hubbub, so it isn't the best choice for those of you looking for a hotel centered around a beach atmosphere, but if you plan on hiring a car, the journey is worth it if what you are looking for is excellence from house-keeping to design. For those of you with young families, the hotel is a lot more child friendly than its quirky design lets on. With the longest roof-top swimming pool in Florida, if not the entire United States, kids will be enthralled for hours.

Cool, sassy and fun, the W South Beach is without doubt one of the highest-profile hotels in Miami and not without good reason. The most impressive aspect of the hotel is its $60 million collection of contemporary art alongside its impressive range of high quality facilities such as its bar, restaurants and pool. It is also located on the beach in a quieter part of SoBe. The hotel is one of the largest in the city and so lacks a little intimacy. A major downer however, is that the rooms severely lack ergonomics and the high quality finish that is expected for the prices charged. Otherwise the gimmicky hotel is fun, young and dynamic and is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele from groups of friends to families and couples.

Slightly out of place among Ocean Drive's colourful Art-Deco hotels, the upscale ethical and art-loving boutique Betsy (a Small Leading Hotel of the World) is one of our favourite establishments in Miami. Combining colonial cool with contemporary casual, this is the ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele including yummy mummies who thank the bulky doormen with a "Thank you honey-bunny". An attractive hotel that has mastered understated elegance down to a T, has all the facilities you would want on holiday, from a rooftop spa to a renowned steakhouse, a funky chic bar to its very own art collection, the Betsy is one of the more pleasant places to stay in Miami. Located right across from Miami Beach, a stay here is ideal for couples as well as families with a big budget as a stay here does not come cheap.

This legendary Miami hotel is packed full of history and tales from days gone by. When you see the imposing building, you are taken right back into the past, and you almost expect to see Al Capone and his cronies drinking cocktails at the bar, or even President Franklin Roosevelt drifting past on a gondola along the canals. The Biltmore is a long way from everything, so it is not really the ideal place to stay if you wish to experience the hectic activity of Miami Beach.

Now it's your turn to be the star, so enjoy a night or two of unadulterated luxury in this sprawling establishment where nothing is lacking.

This is Philippe Starck's second opus in Miami, following the Delano designed in the 80s. By a strange twist of fate the SLS is the building next door. The SLS is THE place to see and be seen. It is the latest addition to its Los Angeles namesake. SLS is expanding across the country. Soon it will be possible to travel across America from one SLS to another! And life will be designer! Hats off to the artist for this magnificent work of art! It would take just one tiny adjustment to make this a superb hotel - bigger guest rooms.
